Interesting question and very subjective.

I generally go in having a basic idea of the concept I’m looking for. I strive to stay away from “cookie cutter” ideas like ‘great Norn warrior’ or ‘blond haired sorceress’ which I see ad infinitum. My best advice is to work it out ahead of time as much as you can. Everyone will have an opinion on how to do it but if you want to make more than just run of the mill characters a little prep time thinking on it will be time well served. Then experiment with the character generation tools to workout the details. Another hard part will be the name so be sure you think of a good one. Not one that seems to have been made by a spastic 13yr old twitch player. Write it out and see how it looks on paper and decide if you will be ok seeing it on your screen 24/7.

Good Luck.

Peace.

“How did you decided yours? animation? looks?”

Honestly, I wanted minimal clipping so I chose Norn (female because I’m a girl irl). Most tight armors and weapons look okay on her and the idle animation is decent. I hate clipping with a burning passion… xD I loved my Asura but the clipping killed her… :c

Profession wasn’t even a question, I’ve been a Ranger since GW1 and it didn’t disappoint me in GW2: versatile, pet tank, great survivability, not overrated like Guardian and Warrior, decently short skill cooldowns, fun weapons and multiple builds I enjoy.

I love Norn as well (the female, not the male :P) and it was my first character at launch (thief). However, doesn’t the sluggish animation annoy you? I re-made my thief (Human this time) simply because of this and because I kinda like the T3 Human Medium armor!

I’m thinking of making a ranger as well but doubting between Human and Norn… Difficult :P

I put quite a bit of thought in my first and main character (though I decided on class by the equivalent of a coin toss). I wanted to try out the sylvari since before beta because their lore and mindset intrigued me (still my favorite race), and I modelled and named it after a peculiar plant I got to know during a trek I did the month before the game released. I know some people frown on naming sylvari after plants, but this one was the symbol of some of the most memorable weeks in my life, had a local name that sounded like it could be a sylvari’s name, and had an environmental niche I like to associate with my attributes of my sylvari. After that I just had a general concept that changed while making the character or I just made one on a whim.
One I named and slightly modelled after a peculiar physical attribute of a friend of mine.
2 others were named after characters I had on the original guild wars, one of which looks a bit like Clint Eastwood, and the other I am levelling because I want to provide portal services to people who need them. These also have a class close to the profession of their GW1 ancestors.
Yet another one was purely a joke character that I made with a friend that I kept because some silliness from time to time does not bother me.
Another one is nothing special, but named consistently with how members of her race name their cubs.

The only consistent thing is that I try to have at least one character of every race, and that I do not make multiple characters of the same class (I am far from an altaholic). I do not really pay attention to adhering to or avoiding stereotypes.

I have at least one of every race and at least one of every profession. I wanted one of every race so that I could experience a personal story for all races. I wanted one of every profession so if I ever played 1vs1 I understand the opponent better and if doing dungeons or group events I could understand how to coordinate with them or how to work combos with them.

My first, and oldest, character was a female ranger. I decided to make her a Norn because I think that is a good combination and I miss living in Alaska. Try different professions because some I like even though I didn’t think I would (warrior comes to mind) . My favorite profession is mesmer (I have 3) which I had no idea about before trying. I just try to pick the race that I think fits, even if others think it is cliche.

Hmm human mostly except in cases where it appeared obvious to myself that the class better fit the race;

Elementalist → Human
Engineer → Asuran
Ranger → Sylvari
Warrior → Charr (except I haven’t leveled him past 3 yet, oddly I leveled a human warrior to 80 instead.. no idea why, maybe I’m just too in touch with my inner Gwenness and “I HATE CHARR!” lol)
Necromancer → Norn

…Everything else Human.

I believe it was my first (if not, then the second character I created – can’t really remember that far back…lol), and I chose an Asura Ranger because I wanted my pet to tower over me. I found the idea amusing at the time, but now it just seems normal. I also enjoy the illusion of speed, even though I realize all races’ base movement speed are the same. I like Asura best for JPs, as well. Of course, I didn’t know these things at launch, but it can influence me when making other characters. I have all races and all professions now, of course.

Good luck.

Asuran/Thief is my main/first.

Just fits really, being sneaky and such it seemed a no-brainer, to me at least, that Asuran was the way to go being the smallest body type in the game and it’s helped me no end in PvP being that small. It also fit the overall theme as they are also the brains over brawn of the game and I’m big into RP. Couldn’t really roll an 8 foot tall Norn Thief but that’s just me :P

The only downfall is I struggle when playing any other race now. They all seem so slow in both movement and animation. Travellers is a must have for me on any other race since.

I mostly chose them based on visual aesthetics. I chose to make my mesmer a human (female) because I think Kasmeer just hits the appeal right on the nose. Likewise I made a charr warrior (male) for Charr T3. I made a human (male) guardian with T3. In time I would like to make an Asura engineer and elementalist.

I tend to stay away from norn and sylvari because I’m not too pleased with them. I like the human/charr aspect because it sort of reminds me of humans/orcs in WoW and Asura are well…the master race.

That is why I made one of my mesmers the shortest and smallest Asuran female I could. I also picked a very short name, K Ki. I thought if I ever play PvP or roaming in WvW I would use her so that it would be harder to notice her, harder to distinguish her from her clones and harder to read any possible telegraphs of what she was going to do next. I also chose her skin color and armor colors so she would blend into the background more.

All my characters are descendants in some way from my GW1 characters of the same primary profession. Non-human characters handle this in different ways: my two Sylvari took their names from seeing their “descendant’s” exploits in the dream, my Charr was orphaned and adopted by the descendants of another character (think Worf from TNG) and my Asuran was enthralled by another GW1 character’s exploits and took a more “Asuran” version of his first name. Most others inherited the surname of the GW1 character.

I only did one odd combo, a Sylvari Necromancer. I loved the idea of a being that is the living embodiment of life dabbling in ways of death. After that it was “makes sense” combos. Charr Warrior, Sylvari Ranger, Asuran Elementalist (more for because I loved Brain… I mean Vekk in Eye of the North). Probably make a Charr engineer because I loved the Charr personal story. I felt important throughout the whole thing, and the sire chapter hit me right in the feels.

I like cats and I like fire, so the first one was a no brainer. The second one is my norn warrior, who has been at level 55 or so for 2 years, so that one didn’t go so well. Third one was a ranger asura because I had a ranger in GW1, and asuras are really cute. Then there were a few that I deleted, followed by another charr, but this time a thief, a sneaky kitty And last was the human guardian, whom I tried to make after Phantom Limb on the Venture Bros. So he wears purple clothes.

I envisioned an outfit and colour scheme for my characters before making them, using the GW2 wiki pages to browse armor sets. Some races look better in different sets and some of my characters use cultural armor. Once I find a look I like I tend to stick with it for quite some length of time. My Necromancer has looked the same for 6+ months. So the way I do it is by pre-making an outfit/colour scheme.

I knew right from the start I’d want to play 1 of each race. I spent a lot of time during the betas trying out professions to match them up.

I knew I wanted my ranger to be human so she could be the descendant of my GW1 ranger. The rest I matched up based on what I could build a character around.

Sylvari elementalist – because the sylvari seem fascinated with how the world works, it made sense that she would want to explore the magic of natural forces and learn to use it.

Charr thief – Ash Legion of course. He’s not the scrawniest I could make him but he’s not big for a charr and had to learn from a young age that his strength lay in outwitting his enemy rather than defeating them through brute force.

Norn engineer – kind of the opposite of the charr. She’s a big girl but lacked the enthusiasm to be a warrior like her parents. Instead she was always fascinated with the workings of things. They tried to encourage her to be an artificer (and she is, in her downtime) but she wanted to explore. A trip to the black citadel introduced her to explosives and she’s never looked back since.

Asura guardian – This one has less of a story but definitely a strong theme: I love the idea of a tiny girl with a big hammer standing up to giant monsters. She’s unusually aggressive for an asura, but she only directs it towards those she thinks deserve it, mainly people who threaten her friends.

I cant play Charr because they are horrendously badly designed and their armour likewise.

I wont play Norn because the run animation looks kitten y and I’m not into the He Man Muscle Mountain look.

Most of my characters are human (9/14), 2 Asura because I finally found looks with those little ratlings that were palatable, and 3 Sylvari basically because of Greenpeace Crolis from Dominion: Tank Police. Actually, my first chara was Sylvari.

As for profession/race combos, I have been through this several times before as to why I don’t think certain professions fit some races. But in summary, IMO…

Humans: any profession.
Sylvari: Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, Thief, Mesmer only, with a possible exception for Elementalist.
Charr: Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, Engineer only.
Norn: Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, Engineer, Mesmer, Elementalist, Necro only. (all except thief)
Asura: Do not really fit any of the professions – they have a tech and culture of their own.

Charr engineer…cause i thought id get a kitten and intimidating “portable” armory of painfull and field tested clockwork devices and alchemy based weapons aswell explosives used by the race i loved to fight and just look at and learn about in gw1. kittening semi bi-pedal beasts with huge fangs, massive shoulders and claws, war on legs basically…i mean i was wowed back then, like hellspawns of orks and felines, i mean how awesome is that? I was hyped as i saw the citadel and tanks and the industrial theme, the outright mean looking riflemen from the trailers and the concept arts and couldnt wait to wear a spiked armor with the elements charr had in their designs.. just evolved to “charrpunk” , protective goggles or a fitting iron mask with a small slit to see through…maybe something along the lines of what the concept art of the fire legion flamethrower dude showed, belts with tools, spare parts and pouches and be just an overall kitten….well…i got the worst texture quality in the game if it comes to armor, the most glitching and stretching, cultural armor thats made up of rags, very few “steampunkish” items in a game that evolved into a more adanced time and uses a lot of technology as plot devices (airships, tanks, mortars, the whole citadel..etc..etc..), ugly hobosacks that can not be dyed, changed OR removed, mostly bland coats as optional armor, mostly bandit style bandanas and way too small hats as headgear… clipping all over the place, no armor that respects the class and race combination regardless that it was one of the classes they said they couldnt ship the game without and a race that is often used as mascot for the game and even sold as plush packs in the gem store (these are awesome btw) and actual plushies, outright broken turrets for a long time, nerf hammer at every patch for a long time…etc..etc. Lots of negatives. Thing is.. i got attached to my char®, even if its FAR from what i came for to play (from a visual viewpoint)…well maybe over time i get that look i want…well.. one can dream.

Four engineers, four different races (no human). Reason is each race’s distinct body shape allowed certain armor pieces to fit well on some, but not on others. So spreading them out gave me a wider stylistic berth: each character still thematically an engineer, but a variation on the same theme.

Only enjoy playing engineer though, so going this route was an easy choice.

I love making sylvari because there’s such a wide array of options for them, so I made a lot of sylvari to begin with. Then I started working my way through the personal stories for the various races. A lot of my newer characters have come as a product of RP. I also like having race/class combos that seem unlikely: Norn necromancer, charr thief, and asura warrior, for example.
