All the ways I made gold before are either removed or nerfed, except for TP flipping, but honestly that’s not how I want to play the game plus I simply don’t have the time for that anymore with my current schedule.

I used to do dungeons for gold, but that got nerfed.

I used to do Silverwastes for gold, but that got boring and nerfed with the new event system.

I used to farm Trick or Treat bags in Rata Sum, but that got nerfed.

Then I farmed ToT bags in Bloodtide Coast, but this also got nerfed.

Then I did the Halloween PvP reward track for ToT bags, but that track got removed.

Then I remembered that gathering flax seeds was a good way to make gold… except it isn’t anymore (they dropped to 8 silver a piece).

So, how the hell do I make gold now? And why are all the ways I used to make gold getting removed or nerfed?

I usually don’t like people who complain about “play how you want to play”… but seriously though, what happened to “play how you want to play”?

Gathering and ascended crafting. It’ll take lots of logging for a weaponsmith but worth it if you have a feel for tree nodes. You can also look up a map for permanent iron and platinum nodes and just mine everything you see then put that towards Deldrimor steel. Also karma converting mid level armors to linen and coarse leather for their ascended counterparts.

At no point did “play how you want” ever mean “play how you want and make lots of gold”.

You can play the game any way you wish. They vary in their lucrativeness.

There were some good gold farms that have been removed, yes. We can all agree the gold farm was a bit too good, which is why people are upset it is gone. Prior to SW chest farming, only dedicated dungeon speedrunners could make that kind of money in equal periods of time, but of course had a per day cap. Before dungeon gold rewards you had nothing concrete that I can remember. Champ train wasn’t nearly as lucrative kitten chest or dungeon speedruns.

Ultimately I’m unaffected as I’m mostly a TP flipper for cash and only did SW chest runs intermittently.

I just don’t think the “play how you want” manifesto chant applies here. The SW farm can still be done. There were never promises that it would be lucrative.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

I don’t understand all these “how do I make gold” posts, seriously…

Just play the game and do what you find fun and gold will come without even thinking about it. It’s not like gold is required for a huge amount of things besides vanity items and a small amount of convenience items if you do trade gold to gems.

Exotics can get you through all the content. And even if you MUST have that ascended, well like I said play the game and it will come. I made myself a full set of ascended and I did not buy 1 mat, it all came from just gathering etc as I went along.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

This is the type of player the game is made for. I am one of them as well. Just play and enjoy the game. I LOVE to hear all the whining when people cant get everything in one day. Earn your stuff instead of buying or farming it. You get crap drops because you farm, you know that, right??.

First of all, thanks for all the people who posted genuine tips for how to acquire a good amount of gold in a respectable amount of time.

To those who preach about how I shouldn’t need gold for most of the things I do, or how I should just play the game and gold will come automatically: save it. I’m literally not interested in your opinion on whether I do or do not need gold (I think I know best whether I need gold or not), or how I should just play the game and accept the pitiful amount of silver that the game throws at me after everything I loved doing to make gold got nerfed in their rewards or completely removed from the game.

Anyway, I know whining about it won’t change anything, hence instead of whining, I decided to ask other players what currently the best ways to make gold are (aside from TP flipping).

So far I got a few decent tips that I’m gonna try out. Keep em comming gents.

Really?

Whenever I do what I feel like doing, I barely make any gold at all.

What is it that you do then? And how much is “quite a bit” in terms of gold/hour, or gold/day?

As someone mentioned, definitely hit the guaranteed rich iron nodes. There are at least seven which are very quick and painless to get to (no jumping puzzles, running too far, etc.) which can net you about 3.5g a day at current prices, and even more when you run into nodes along the way to them.

I collect all the champ bags I get from playing and open them on a level 54 alt. I still get exotics, t6 mats and lodestones since i got the bags from a level 80 char + the greens and blues are at the level range of my alt which gives me linen and rugged leather which are pretty pricey now.

The only downside is that the rares are also dragged down to that level tier but since its not that common and globs are really cheap now I don’t think the loss is enough to negate the gains. Also sometimes the weapons can sell for a pretty penny.

Its not really a “best” way to earn gold but more of increasing what you can potentially earn.

Another thing I did was to farm the left side of the mount maelstrom map. There’s a permanent platinum vein and sometimes a random one near the bottom at the swamp area + the place is full of normal plat and hard wood nodes. Takes bout 10-15 mins if you go fast and its repeatable on multiple chars.

Forging precursors is what I used to do, but took a break from that and crafted myself some ascended armor sets in preparation for HoT’s raids. Now I’m kinda low on gold and low on mats, so that means I’m either gonna have to gather the mats to forge a pre (don’t feel like doing that, but if I really have to) or gather the gold to buy the mats.

Investing is something I’m aware exists, but never really understood how people go about this. Care to explain? Some tips to get a newbie investor started? Feel free to send me a PM with additional info if you’d like. I would really appreciate that.

I probably don’t have the budget to really invest into anything, but it’s something I might wanna try in the future when I saved up some gold again.

When you say crafting, do you mean crafting ascended mats (like deldrimore and damask)? Or something else?

Undercutting the lowest listing by a copper, when selling your loot, instead of selling directly also usually gives you 20-50% gold for your loot.

You could also just list it 20-50% OVER the lowest listing and wait until it sells.

When you say crafting, do you mean crafting ascended mats (like deldrimore and damask)? Or something else?

I forged 20 pres since HoT and made between 300-500g profit per pre, as prices for mats went way down. I expect another flush of mats with wintersday (t5 snowflakes), so you might want to start preparing for that (start crafting mithril plated dowels and weapon components now).

With crafting i dont neccessarily mean ascended mats (but atm give a couple of gold profit, i think, even if you buy the mats for it).

There are plenty of items in demand right now, mostly for guild hall upgrades, basic collections and gear for new alts and players who just hit 80.

I have an ongoing thread about the economy, trading and how i go about investing and making gold in the HoT subforum, where i also answer specific questions from other players. It shoud be on the first page.

Achemy my friend, alchemy. An old tradition. Or, in this game: crafting. Sun beads…

Yeah, thats a good example of how to make gold with crafting and how to turn your account bound mats (karma) into gold, taking advantage of demand for items used in collections and how to profit from bulk-producing items with high opportunity costs, as people have to port to the vendor to obtain sun beads and they need alot of them to craft the full set, so its alot of clicking.

As you mentioned alchemy, this link is one of the best sources i know to find out what to do with your leftover spirit shards:

Your issue is your playing to gain gold not have fun which is why your finding the reduced rewards to be “ruining” things for you. I hate to sounds like a broken record but as other people have said, just play the game. Enjoy it. The money will roll in.

Here are some simple ways to make some coin and enjoy your self:

  • Do you like pvp? Play it. You get 30s on a win and 15 on a loss.
  • Do you like events. Play some. You’ll get loot, karma and a bit coin. Loot can be salvaged or sold, karma can be converted to salvage.
  • Do you like dungeons or fractals? Run those you still get rewards they still do add up.
  • Do you like wandering aimlessly? If so do so and pick up nodes along the way.
  • Do you like standing around in lions arch all day? fine do it you can even make money at that even though I personally wont give anything to beggars but there are people who do all the time.
  • Do you like to play korean farmville mmorpg? then farm some god awful mob for its drops(EG sparks for charged cores and loadstones) and sell them.

1. world bosses – you can do 4 of these every hour and make at least 2.5 gold an hour and if super super lucky you make 2k gold

2. silver waste – salvage all blue armour and fountain all green armour to give you the maximum profit. Also get on chest train, this method will give you on average 10 gold an hour if you are active

3. trading post saving – when sell mats, make sure you don’t sell right a way and set your price right, same goes for buy. This way every time you sell things you make 15%-20% more and when buying things you lose 15%-20% less. Meaning you’ll actually be 40% richer

4. karka farming at Sunset Cove – every karka shell is 12 silver and if you have a group of 20 then you can make about 5-6 gold an hour

5. TP flipping – risky but rewarding

The reason why dungeon gold are nerfed is because they are really easy to do and gives rewards that are too good. Now people still do them for mats but no just grinding them for gold

When I crafted my precursor I’d mass produce shortbows by gathering in Orr. I’d hit every node and it took a couple of weeks to finally land one. After finishing ascended armor I’ll work on either the sword or dagger since those tend to be in demand. I personally don’t like the idea of precursor crafting for profit due to the high risk involved (I’ve heard stories of people losing 1000g in the forge) but if it works for some it should at least be worth checking out. Though I’d rather salvage the crafted rares and get some ectos.

Mmmm, yes yes, please. Tell everyone more about what they think. I bow to you Miss Cleo of GW2.

For the record I am a dude and I am not telling people what to think or do. My further post above was suggesting things you could do.

What I am saying there is a lot of you acting like a bunch of entitled kids; that have no discipline, require instant gratification and complain the moment you run out of things to do. If you want nice things, then yes you gota work for them. Also if you work for things you appreciate them more. If it takes you longer, you have more to do. Making things easier adds no value or longevity to the game. That is my opinion. No where did I say my opinion was fact.

I wish people would stop saying “The money will roll in”. That’s just egregiously wrong. It’s only a lot of money to people who’ve barely or never tried to accumulate gold before. If you want to actually buy anything, the amount of hours you’d have to stack is just stupid.

I am going to ask you two questions on saving up because I am trying to understand your situation, because frankly I am not understanding or I am misinformed. So please enlighten me on…

  1. What things do you need to buy that are not purely cosmetic?
  2. How much is this unobtainable amount of gold to achieve the previous question?

Lastly I would think some one who is literate enough to know and correctly use the word egregious would be above name calling to make a point. Lets keep things constructive.

The biggest issue with gold earning in-game is consistency. Between dungeons and SW farming one could reliably estimate an income based on time spent in these activities.

That’s a lot less feasible now, and as a former dungeon farmer I can relate. A couple dungeons a day, with other activities in between and I made between 400 and 500g each month for the last two years. Then Mr. Smith swoops all like ‘No gold for you!’ It’s jarring, and as it is I have no way of pacing myself. It’s going to be a while before a lot of players can adjust to this.

Also, if you guys could stop speaking as though cosmetics as some kind of peripheral fluff that’d be great. The vast majority of endgame progression, and Anet’s business strategies, revolve around cosmetics. They’re kind of a big deal here.

Yeah I knew about that spot. Flax used to go for 15s a piece which seriously added up. Now it’s only half that. For some reason I thought gathering flax wasn’t worth it anymore, but I now realize I was being silly because parking alts at that spot and farming that spot on all alts once a day literally takes no time or effort. Sure, it might not be as lucrative anymore as it used to be, but it still adds up (4+ gold a day as you yourself said).

Flax, iron ore at Gallowfields, potatoes at Loreclaw, iron ore at Helliot Mine. All close to waypoints, easy peasy.

I usually don’t like people who complain about “play how you want to play”… but seriously though, what happened to “play how you want to play”?

Ultimately I’m unaffected as I’m mostly a TP flipper for cash and only did SW chest runs intermittently.

And this is where you are oh so wrong. Gold is being sucked out of the game at an alarming rate via sinks. You “make money” doing your TP flipping because other people have gold to buy your items with. The gold is leaving the game, people have less and less gold to spend. You are absolutely impacted.

Then the moment they finish all their goals they then blame the devs for running out of things to do…

Ugh, this was painful to read.
1. Miss Cleo is an extremely famous fortune teller and bullkitten artist. It was a reference to bullkitten mindreading as an argument. Seriously man, you live under a cultural rock or something? The whole point is that you’re entirely assuming what people’s motivations are and using it as an argument. That’s garbage. Get that weak stuff out of here.

2. If I want nice things, I now have zero tolerable ways to get them. The time it takes to get anything nice is now way out reach. Even if I did spend 2 hours a night playing, at least in the past I could just do gold specific things occasionally and have the funds to mess around with alts and try things. Now? Everything is so expensive and convoluted that it’s completely sapped my interest. I don’t even care anymore because it feels more like a job than rewarding in anyway. I like having goals but this doesn’t feel like fun anymore, it feels like I’m paying off my student loans except in game, kittening endless.

3. Making things arbitrarily take longer is not “adding longevity to the game”. How is forcing you to repeat the same content 100x instead of 30x “adding longevity”? Did you even think this through? Are you one of those people that think that repetitive grinding is “content”?

4. “Other than cosmetic”. Oh, so I can’t want cosmetic upgrades? That’s a real nice limitation to have. I guess one of the biggest incentive goals to work towards in the game is just out of reach for people who don’t have 8 hours a day to play with the reduced rewards. That’s some real great “content and longevity” there. Never mind that now with the ascended changes, if you were like me and wanted to wait to make equipment to see how much the zerker meta in PvE would change, you’re now boned. Wanted to make a set for each armor class? Hahahaha! Sorry kitten! We got some “content and longevity” to ram down your throat! Why? Because obviously you want to be grinding more of the same content right? I mean…that’s longevity isn’kitten

5. How much gold? Go look at how much a stack of linen is if you want any ideas. Thank kittening Christ I leveled up my crafting long ago otherwise I would have simply given up on that too.

Also, very nice of you to throw on that faux “I’m the reasonable one” face after assuming you know what everyone’s motivations are. “Oh, these are the people who just complain that there’s nothing to do!”

Yea, sure you know. You sure do know. /s

Oh, one last bit. Just because I’m literate does not mean I run a long fuse for people telling me what I should enjoy.

This is exactly what ANet wants. If Gold has more value, people are willing to spend gems (real money) for gold conversion. Buying and converting today means that your value of your real life money is worth just as much (or more) than when you spent it to get the gold.

TP flipping is a reduction of gold in the economy and extremely beneficial at the macro economic level. However, TP flipping is not without a lot of risk because there is virtually no inhibitor for the next guy/gal to undercut you by 1c and you lose the sale.

I’m not giving an opinion or what that means. It’s just reality.

Interesting “play how you want to play” complaint thread using content only available for a few weeks to make gold. 3 out of 5 gold making schemes are tied to the ToT bags.

Wait til Wintersday… you can make gold again…

The gold you buy with gems is being bought from other players. It’s not gold that’s just magically created when you give Anet your cash. It’s bought from players who are using gold to buy gems. You are selling your gems to them for their gold. If there’s no gold in the economy, the buying and selling of gems (and the buying and selling of gold) goes down the tubes, too.

Your issue is your playing to gain gold not have fun which is why your finding the reduced rewards to be “ruining” things for you. I hate to sounds like a broken record but as other people have said, just play the game. Enjoy it. The money will roll in.

Just like in real life, if you do not keep up with inflation, you’ll lose purchasing power. That’s the problem with the game now. I can’t just run around a map for “enjoyment” when I know I’m constantly falling behind by doing so. Unfortunately, that’s what the dev’s want. They want that feeling of falling behind, that need to drive gems sales. Pre Hot, I’d spend real currency as a reward to the Dev’s for a great job and for the entertainment value provided. Now, it’s this constant weight sucking and pulling at us. Especially with the extreme gold sinks like Guild Halls added.

I’ve been running around maps for enjoyment, and I’ve made over 300g since HoT launched, which is unprecedented for a casual player like myself.
