In an MMO, a lot of fun comes from other players. And even little things can make others happy, especially when unexpected. A friendly, polite answer already goeas a long way for many. I also like to do little, unexpected random acts of kindness, because fun. I encounter many that do the same. And I’d like to ask you for inspiration on little things you can do ingame, to make some strangers experience a tiny bit brighter.

- planting box-o-fun at waiting places: Whether it’s LionsArch or Jormag’s Claw spawn point. Planting fun items everyone can use always results in a lot of people running around having fun instead of just standing around bored.

- Mesmer ports: when I’m in a JP with my Mesmer, I call out in map chat if someone wants a port. I don’t take any rewards, the thanks make me happy. Especially in not really known JPs this leads to nice experiences. Have had it often that some people didn’t even know a JP existed there and were really happy when I pointed out the entrance and gave them assistance.

- Newbie donations: people new in the game benefit from things that are entirely useless to others. When I encounter a clear beginner asking confused basic questions, I sometimes send them 8 slot bags that just pile up useless in my bankslot. Costs me nothing and usually gets very enthusiastic responses.

I posted this in another thread:

Now that I’ve been playing for a while I have found a fun way for me to help others and thanks to no fighting over resources and XP it works. I go to places like Queensdale and look for someone that is struggling. I don’t immediately run up shouting I’m here to save the day. Instead I try to not let them know I’m following them. I follow from a distance and hide behind trees and rocks and such. I let them decide what to do without counting on me to be there. Since I use ranged weapons I wait until I see them get into a pretty dicey situation with adds and what not and I fly in range guns blazing and then disappear again. I don’t even loot drops or farm resources.
I figure that I’ll let them play and learn things as they want but not let them get beat up doing it. If they ask for more help I do most of the time. I’ve followed a few that I don’t think they new what was going on. I think they thought I was an NPC that just happened to be around when they got in over their heads.

I’ll answer questions if I see them (and know the answer), in town or in map chat. It never hurt anyone to answer a simple question. There have been so many times where I’ve seen someone ask something simple/basic and get flack for it. “Go check the wiki” and crap as a response. Heck, their have been times where I haven’t known the answer, so I wikied it for them. I wasn’t busy, so why not?

I’ll also go out of my way to rez someone that’s down if I see them on my mini map (its really surprising the number of people that will ignore a downed player). Or will answer a call for help if I’m not busy at the time. I spend a lot of time just roaming low and mid-level maps, jumping in when it looks like someone needs a hand and such.

I used to do new player hand outs in GW1 (free green weapons, unded minis, etc in the starter towns), but I haven’t really gotten to that point yet in GW2. I look forward to eventually having too much stuff and just randomly giving it away to low level characters. Always a nice feeling.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I really like to answer questions, I see a lot of cooperation in this game where someone asks a question and 5 or 6 people give answers. This was the case in GW1 I know. Even in higher areas where you might expect people to say things like "How did you get here without knowing that?’ Well sometimes you don’t pick up on everything, I mean, dodging is a huge part of this game, but I had 2 toons to 80 before I even did it much. Not really until I got into dungeons did I start. (Just an example)
I also like crafting bags for newbies and guild members.
I really like hanging out in level 1-15 areas and showing new people neat stuff. I think that if someone encounters a truly helpful person in the first day of playing a game they’re likely to stick with it.

If I find a rare or exotic I have no use for I like to ask if anyone in the map needs it and then just tend to give it to the first person who comes along. I don’t really need the silver it would bring in the TP so I figure, why not?

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

Why don’t you recycle them and collect ectos? Ectos are needed for countless things.

I don’t craft, no desire ta craft, and if someone else can use it I say good for them. (and if they just break it down for the Ectos? Kind of disappointing, but ya know, it was just junk in my inventory and hopefully they will use it to craft.)

I’ve done the following multiple times with joy:

*Showed people where Lion’s Arch is, explaining how their Hall of Monuments stuff worked out from GW1 to GW2

*Randomly rez players who take on mobs nearly twice their experience.

*Lay out food trays because someone could benefit from the buffs. Which brings me to a question: Do they need to be a certain level to enjoy a certain food tray?

*Loop around most hearts and champions to help anyone out just…because.

*Answer questions and offer tips on the professions.

*Randomly mail away potions, boost items, and food because I craft way too much.

So good to see others also enjoy helping.

@Atlas: yes, I think the food trays require the same level as the single-helping versions.

I just had an idea while sitting in the office. In the evening I’ll go to queensdale with my guardian and ask in mapchat for newbies that would like a tour of the jumping puzzle. The puzzle is easy and some might not be aware these exist. I get asked a lot about doing JPs when I port people through them. What do you think? Worth a try?

Well there went my dreams of a omnom bar buffet for level 5 players.
Tours of jump puzzles sounds like a good idea, I’ve done similar when someone wants to have a body guard against the mobs in some of them.

I camp that Queensdale bandit skill point near Vale because it has handed players their butts for far too long!

I’ve posted alot about the negatives of this game but there are positives they make it so that you can help people. I like running up and rezing a total stranger or helping kill something that they are struggling with because they are new to mmo’s entirely. I like helping people find the things they need as well.

The whole game used to be like that, all of us filthy casual PVE only players were running around all over the place, but sadly when they implemented some bad design choices they lost alot of good people. I uninstalled the other night because of their lack of interest in keeping this game updated and bug free.

I just checked the wiki and look at the sentence I found:
“Boon duration is 1 hour, and the magnitude scales on the level of the player who consumed it. "
Yay for community feasts ^^
