How do you check out guilds?
I don’t. Auto-invites I immediately decline.
That being said, I’m not part of guilds anyway. But, if I were wanting to join a guild, it’d be because I got to know some of the members first.
That was how things were run from the guild side when I seconded my LotRO guild… we’d extend invites to those we got to know first.

I’m only in guilds with players I have gotten to know. Map guild spammers and invites out of nowhere get ignored/declined.
If I were without guild and looking for a guild, I would say to myself: “hey, why not?” and I would join. Always a chance to get to know more people.
I tested these kind of invites with a mule account back in GW1 and found that they are usually recently created short-living guilds with lots of beginner players. They are “fresh meat”. The beginners of the beginners.
For guilds created just a few days ago, I observed this: The guild leader eagerly invites people until the guild has about 20-30 members and then stops inviting. He encourages the 2 officers to invite instead, but the officers don’t invite. From these 20 players, only 2 still log regularly on after one week. Another week later, everyone either left the guild or didn’t log on for a week or two – not even the leader himself.
But it doesn’t hurt to accept an unexpected invite. You can join, look around, and you can leave it if doesn’t suit you! You don’t pay anything, and nobody is holding you back. It is certainly better than not looking around at all.
When I was looking for a guild, I observed the people around me who were doing the same things I was enjoying doing, such as world bosses and map exploration. I noted the people/guilds who were helpful, either by rezzing people or responding positively to new players’ questions in map chat – because that’s the kind of player I am. Over time, I got to know people who I liked, who got to know me as well… and then I started talking to them about their guild. The same approach applies whether you prefer PvE, PvP, WvW, or raids.
Like Silmar Alech, above, I have seen a lot of out-of-the-blue guild invites from new players creating brand new guilds – and most of those don’t last, sadly. Most experienced guilds do not blindly send out invites, but start a conversation if they think you would be a good fit for their guild.
Finding the right guild for you is a wonderful thing in this game. It’s all about finding a group of people who like doing what you’re doing (and/or are willing to help you step out of your comfort zone and try something new, if you want). Take your time and look around you – your new guildies might be standing next to you right now!

Guilds are all the same. Close to 500 members, helpful, friendly, wide range of planned daily activities, etc. The reality is that they’re vanity projects with maybe a dozen members that use guild chat, might do weekly missions, and the rest is a big fat lie because nobody cares. I haven’t found a guild yet that lives up in any way to their recruiting hype.

I disagree, there are some great guids, you can always post what kind of guild your looking for here and reddit but some guilds really do enforce thier rules, you want an active required guild but not demanding on what to do with your time, as long as its a you help us we help you sort of thing.
