Q:

So I just earmed myself a stalker thanks to my old guild that started hating on me and spreading information about my Facebook and I would like to know how you guys and Arena Net handle this.

Blocking a person can’t be solely the way on how to do this, but I have contacted Arena Net a numerous times, even contacting the guild’s officers and just don’t seem to care (when that’s their job…To deal with problems inside the guild).

If there’s an employee reading this, I would greatly appreciate your approach, so this person stops sending my personal information.

A:

Each case of reported “stalking” or harassment is reviewed by our Customer Support team individually and with care. Here are some steps you could take:

  • Block the player on your Friends List
  • Play in Invisible Mode
  • Try reaching out to the person’s guild leader if you feel that the person would be receptive to helping you
  • File an in-game report
  • Submit a support ticket (see below for details)
  • If the harassment extends to real life (at your home, place of business, via telephone, etc.), contact your local law enforcement agency

Now, there are occasions when claims of “harassment” run in both directions. I am not making a judgment about any situations mention here, but sometimes chat records show a back-and-forth bickering or attacking that does not allow an easy solution. This means an agent confirms an in-game report but also notes that the alleged victim also was in breach of the UA or the RoC. If there’s evidence of what we call “mutual antagonism” then it gets trickier and a resolution isn’t as simple to reach.

If someone is overtly harassing a player, the team may well be able to help with the situation if that player wishes to file a support ticket. (We cannot accept a ticket on behalf of a third party — the person involved should reach out to CS.) When doing so, please provide your character name, the offending player’s character or display name, and a very precise time, time zone, and date. Screenshots are not necessary if you can provide those details, at which time an agent will look up the incident and see what took place.

Bottom line: if you’re being harassed, do not react. Do not have your friends react. Don’t post about it on a forum or make a public issue of it. Do not start a flame war or fire a bunch of verbal mortar shots back in the direction of the person who initiated the attacks. Simply submit an in-game report or, if necessary, a ticket.

If you have submitted a ticket and the team has not reacted, then you need to continue your private discussion with a CS agent, as we would not discuss particulars here on the forums.

You can contact the CS Team by submitting a request for assistance. Top of Page – Support – Submit a Request.

If you’ve not contacted them using this method previously, it is unlikely you would get a response, though they may have investigated an in-game report.

Good luck.

If they’re stalking you outside of the game and onto public forums, such as FB, it is out of Arenanet’s hands. Take it up with FB and make appropriate steps at that point and in the future keep that information private. If your friends in the game can’t be satisfied by talking to you in the game and aren’t real-life friends then they probably aren’t really friends that should know the information anyway.

I only give out private information to people I’ve met several times in real life and feel comfortable with, you can’t get those interactions over the internet.

As it is, you should set FB so only friends/family (maybe even friends of friends/family) can see/contact your profile (it is possible if you can find the privacy links on FB). You may even need to get a new phone number/e-mail at this point too depending on what you decided to let FB make public knowledge.

Involving the law should be a last resort since there may be limitations as to what it can do since the offending party could easily be out of state or even the country. Law has very little power over online interactions for this reason, the government is just not equipped to deal with it and probably never will be with how fast technology grows.

Also, leaving the guild is a viable option as well. If the offending party is still in your guild, and your guild is doing nothing to stop it then the guild is not worth being in. There’s thousands of guilds out there to choose from, you don’t need to put up with cyber bullying.

mostly just block them and go on. but if it honestly bothers you that much, contact facebook, contact anet, then get ahold of either a lawyer or law enforcement and they will have the persons ISP send a cease and whatchmakallzit…

Block them both in-game and on Facebook. If it persists then simply tell them you will contact the police. If it continues after that then do so.
Cyber law is pretty stringent these days, if they have the balls to keep harassing you then they won’t last very long.
Really its up to you to survey the severity.

I have also one person in game who is stalking me. Fortunately he does not know who I am in RL. So that stalking is happening only in the game.

Only solution, what I have found in my case, is that I am playing only invisible mode. You know that when you are logging in the game, in your character selection screen you can access your contacts, in there you can choose what mode you are playing. If you are playing invisible mode, others see you offline. So stalkers will leave you alone.

Never ever tell in the online game your real name, your real living place or any other information.
