RBG value of a dye ? Someone in the game said through “Account” and I don’t know what that means. I ask because I was certain I had darkest (Abyss) dye in the game until Shadow Abyss was promoted and my inner BS detector alarm sounded and said…."did they just lighten the original Abyss to make Shadow Abyss appear darker ?

I’m not sure what they meant either. I know the dyes have different rarities, but the value is more dependent on supply and demand. Abyss was the darkest dye for most armors before the shadow abyss dye came out, but it was never pure black the way the shadow abyss dye is. On some armors, it appeared gray instead of black, sort of like how midnight fire appears brown instead of black (especially with leather armors).

They didn’t lighten abyss, its lightness is just more noticeable now that there’s an even darker black on the market lol.

Thank you Kako. My faith in ArenaNet has been restored. I wouldn’t think they’d stoop to something like that which almost borders on a mild form of fraud. ;-)

There is a handy tool by that_shaman, where you can click on a RBG scale and it gives you the ingame dye that’s nearest to this selected RBG value. If they had lightened up abyss, the data miners had clearly noticed.

Abyss was never fully black across all materials. That’s why I never tried to buy it. Shadow Abyss is.

you can take a screenshot of the dyes, go into photoshop, set the eyedropper to 5×5 pixels to get the average, and then compare the rgb values in the info panel

You can also /wiki <name of dye>
It will give the RGB values for the different materials(cloth, leather, metal).

The original abyss dye always looked very black on leather armor but often has a grey-ish hue to it on most cloth and plate armors.

Below is my thief using the old abyss dye (in combination with other dyes). Looks pretty black to me. Shadow abyss doesn’t really make her armor look any darker.

The wiki shows the color of each (on each type of material) using css-code. There are plenty of tools on the web that can convert this for you.

Alternatively, you can look them up yourself using the game’s API.

The full list is at:
https://api.guildwars2.com/v1/colors.json

Which shows a listing for Abyss as:

:{"name":“Abyss”,base_rgb],“cloth”:{"brightness":-18,contrast,hue,saturation,lightness,rgb,“leather”:{"brightness":-18,contrast,hue,saturation,lightness,rgb,“metal”:{"brightness":-23,contrast,hue,saturation,lightness,rgb,“474”:

That shows the base RGB as 128,26,26 and 26,24,27 for light/cloth armor.
