I have always made tons of gold or whatever the in game currency is in every single MMO I have ever played. And by tons I mean more than anyone could ever possibly need. For example when I quit WoW I had made over 2 million gold and had 800k in just gold with another 300-400k in either auctions or items in my bank waiting to sell or use for a later alt. But when I find youtube guides for level 80 farming people are bragging about making 6-7 gold per hour. Is that even worth your time? Is that some kind of joke or do you just not need gold at all in this game?

The intent is to get folks buying gems with real money and converting to gold. Farming has been nerfed.

Never spent cash on gems, I have more gold than I know what to do with. Just because a few exploits were fixed doesn’t mean “farming was nerfed”

I tend to use crafting to speed level alts… I’ve never needed more than 5g to max a craft, and usually I can max cooking and artificing on a character for around 1g each, so spending a day or two on my main doing dungeons provides more than enough coin to throw 20 levels of crafting xp at an alt….

Honestly, since the only things you need large amounts of gold for are cosmetic improvements, not statistical improvements, a-net is keeping gold scarce so that the value of things like T3 cultural armor (which has a fixed price), remain high.

GW2 isn’t wildly inflationary like WoW was, where you needed wheelbarrows full of gold to buy anything.

You can level a craft with between 2-5g, depending on the discipline. Most efficient way to get that gold is running dungeons, generally I make 3-5g running 2 dungeons.

Here’s a good guide on powerleveling your crafts:

Well, think back to when WoW was new. 7 gold per hour would have been quite the deal back then.
And this is a game that actively fights against farming – ANet don’t want any aspect of this game to rely on grinding, which they have met mixed successes with, but for money it seems like they do a good job.

You can get bags by doing special events, in the past couple months anet has given away a:

10 slot bag (mad king)
20 slot bag (karka invasion)
15 slot bad (tixx)

You can also do fractals to get 20 slot masterwork bags for only 150 relics, which, depending on your fractal level, can be obtained in 2 runs.

GW2 is still fairly young and hasn’t gone through years of near-constant inflation like WoW. So Gold is still meaningful.

The only really effective way of making lots of Gold is by “playing” the Trade Post in bulk quantities, creating artificial supply limits and investment opportunities. But obviously this takes time and a certain finesse to master.

Farming on the other hand will pale in comparison. Without excessive luck you won’t be gaining more than 3-4 Gold an hour while grinding events in Orr. Other activities offer a similar return on time-invested.

This is misleading, farming got nerfed because of exploits and bots, not because players were legitimately earning too much and Anet wanted to force them into their wallets.

There has to be check and balances or the economy will fail.

I wished you people with your tin foil hat theories would stop with this drivel.

This. So much this. I don’t even put in effort, and I have over 300g earned on my character. I’ve never farmed anything.

Some easy methods for gold are Twilight Arbor and CoE lodestone selling. With a little luck, you make a ton of gold, but you need a group.

GW2 economy dont need to have DR. Anet does. The white knights trying to make out that its all tinfoil hat stuff just chat rubbish. Ya dont put into place DR to combat Bots, you just combat the bots without effecting the playerbase. Ever wonder why there are still bots hanging around so much even though Anet have supposedly a massive team stalking the servers trying to eradicate em?

Simple. Bots all gone = they lose their reasoning for DR. They need that reasoning so some people are blinded by the fact they are tryig to force you into flipping gems into gold. If they didnt want a farming game. Then stop with the stupid ammounts of t6 mats on items. Farming effects their gem sales hence why they nurfed it.

Twilight Arbor/CoE/AC.

Twilight Arbor gives about 1g per run coin drops + 1-3g in core/lodestone (you’re pretty much going to get a core every time, and lodestones aren’t rare) + any of the dungeon specific exotics (which have a MUCH higher drop rate than standard exotics, still low, but effectively 5% drop chance against 0.0001% drop chance). Add all that together, and a little luck is 5g in 20 min.

CoE. Charged Lodestone drops. Need I say more. Get a good group and farm, and you’ve got a good shot at charged core/lodestones.

AC. More gold dropping champion mobs than anywhere else. Full clearing it on path 2 alone has over half the fights containing a champion who drops coin. Bring Omnomberry bar, profit. Bonus points if you do an all kill run for the extra champions.

5g in 20 min with a good group(for TA). Not DR’d if you swap between dungeons.

A-net has posted several times that:

1) They are going after Bots and Exploits, but do not want to impact legitimate farming methods used by players

2) They keep a close eye on rewards and adjust as needed. Remember the huge boosts to dungeon rewards recently? Why do you think so many people have gone to dungeons for $$?

3) They do not intend to allow for loops that create wealth from near zero effort, and they work to close those exploits quickly.

A-net’s approach preserves the value of gold so that the items you worked hard to obtain (T3 armor anyone?) maintains its value, even months down the road. We don’t want an economy where gold is easy to obtain, if we did, then the things we purchased with that gold would lose the value they have.

Still haven’t converted gems to gold, and while I won’t call myself ‘rich’, and have never had over 100g to my name, all my characters that are lvl 80 are kitted out in exotics and I’m working on getting the things that I want…. sure, it takes time, but I get progress towards my goals doing things that are fun to do, so who cares?

alot of weapons/armor you can get from dungeon vendors that cost no gold. manuals cost 3g10s in total and by level 60 you should have that amount and some more easily from completing hearts/vendoring. 8 slot bags should hold you until you reach the mid levels to pay 50s for 15 slots. if you dont care about a legendary, uniques or the gemstore then you will have no problem obtaining all the gold you need.

the need for more only comes around when you “want” something that requires it.

Go farm in the world. Go do event chains in Orr. Heck, go farm waves of Harpies at the event next to the dungeon entrance to AC (I’ve pulled lvl 74 rares out of that event.)

If that’s what you want to do, then do it.

However, that may not be the best way to make money. The game is pretty PUG friendly, but I feel you on not wanting to do some group activities. I rarely do fractals because I can’t commit the time to finish a run with a PUG and I hate to have to bail on a group. That’s okay, I get my $$ other ways. If nothing else, a single path of AC is usually pretty quick.

Like anything in life, different methods can reach the same end goal at different rates. Do you want to farm open world game play or do you want to get lots of coin quickly? If you want to farm open world, you may not get to the same end as quickly as people who live in dungeons.

Want it that bad? Synth the T6 mats from T5 mats. You can make ALOT of profit doing this at the right times, but it eats into skillpoints like no tomorrow. And you get skill points from everything.

The “solo farming” you’re talking about has proven time and time again to be to basically camp down atop one easy to kill mob type with a highly valuable drop, and mow them down. So, I ask again, why should sitting down, and fighting untold amounts of easy to kill enemies be worth a competitive amount to a series of challenging (by comparison if not on their own merit) boss fights and gauntlets that require five people, and for the truly valuable ones, skill and cordination to do right.

The intent is to get folks buying gems with real money and converting to gold. Farming has been nerfed.

Never spent cash on gems, I have more gold than I know what to do with. Just because a few exploits were fixed doesn’t mean “farming was nerfed”

I wondered how long it would take for the “I play obsessively/found a neat little rare spot therefore everybody else’s experiences are completely wrong” crowd to establish in this game like they did in the original.

Anyway, you get a lot of gold by getting a precursor and then obsessively farming the materials required to make a full legendary weapon, then, you sell it on the AH for 1000g to people who bought gold illegally from bots before they get caught and banned.

Because just like in the original, ANET has decided you don’t want to farm for gold or items and that you’re totally cool with dedicating two or three hours a day to playing for 30 or 40 silver if you’re really lucky and merch all the garbage that drops.

Better get on it though. Prices won’t stay around 1000g forever.

So, I ask again, why should sitting down, and fighting untold amounts of easy to kill enemies be worth a competitive amount to a series of challenging (by comparison if not on their own merit) boss fights and gauntlets that require five people, and for the truly valuable ones, skill and cordination to do right.

I wouldn’t generally disagree but the whole “farm gauntlets endlessly” system of making money in MMOs got old for most of us more than five years ago. It would be nice if a company could just figure out a way to let people build wealth consistently by playing the game instead of manipulating it all the time. A great example would be crafting. It sure would be nice if somebody could figure out a way to make crafting a viable and valuable part of an MMO, something I haven’t since done successfully since Ultima Online.

I am sooo with you on this. TA is rough, but it makes me want to master it….. and the CoE light set is drool worthy…. would love it for my ele!

But isn’t that the way of things? Anything worth having takes some work to get…. so time to roll up the sleves and dig in Pride in accomplishment is hard to justify if the work to get the accomplishment wasn’t… well hard.

As to open world farming and other fast money…. running around with a pic for mithril does net decent cash, as does running around logging in the same area…. just run node to node to node…. not a lot of thinking, but it does work.

Mystic weapons can net a good return on skill points, but at 50 skill points a pop, it’s not something you do often.

It sure would be nice if somebody could figure out a way to make crafting a viable and valuable part of an MMO, something I haven’t since done successfully since Ultima Online.[/quote]

Have to agree on the crafting part. But killsquads in places like Southsun can make steady cash by running Karka down in seconds. Again, not a solo affair, but you can pull in decent gold if you’ve got people buffing with swiftness for running betweeen karka. 5x axe/warhorn warriors is great for this. Powerful blood isn’t exactly cheap.

Material Synth is kinda the last bastion of crafting into money in this.

You do need currency (silver/gold) to play this game, and I’m not talking about cosmetics.
You need it for books to unlock traits, armour, weapons, bags, repairs.

You don’t need gold for armor/weapons. You don’t need gold for bags.

Honestly using gold for armor is probably the worst way to get it. Armor you can buy is ugly and has a rather limited range of stats. Dungeon gear offers a wider range of stats and better appearances.

I repeat you (your toon) does need currency (silver/gold) to play this game, vendors do not give stuff out for free, nor do they repair armor for free.

The only thing you need gold for is repairs and for trait books.

You’ll get more than enough to cover that with any means.

So you finally agree, that you need currency (silver/gold) to play this game.

Southsun karka farming.. really? The shell droprate is pitiful. Karka farming seems like a horrid way to try to get coin/hr, even with a few vials and blues tossed in with a couple shells

well then i’ve been doing it wrong xD

Do you need gold?

Yes

The amount you need is so tiny and insignificant that no matter what you do you should never be short on gold.

The game is designed in a way that the best way to make gold is using Visa. Thats because you have Anet selling gold. They want your money, thats all.

If they weren’t selling it in controlled enviroment gold sellers would kill economy in matter of months.

Why do all these tin foil hatters ignore than someone has to farm the gold for gem to gold exchanges?

Oh right, its because the fact that gem-gold trades are between players is a fact that completely destroys their precious little conspiracy theories… and they need their scapegoats.

Okay cool.
Just making sure that you understand that there is currency used in this game.
I mean it was you that made a post on how to make gold in this game?

Since most vendors only accept silver or gold in trade for what you want from them.
Wish they would take a personnel check, but I guess npc vendors don’t trust us players. lol

Dredging up an old post here, but it’s an interesting statement for the tin-foil hat types. John says that the game is designed to be tight “in the beginning.”

To me, working as intended and I have no problems, we’re still very early into the life cycle of an MMO. I hate stepping into a game that has been around for 2+ years and feeling like there’s no hope because if you haven’t kept up with the inflation etc then you’re hoplessly behind and will never have the ability to catch up. A-net is making sure we have a good game to play now, 2 years from now, and beyond. Also a game that we can take a break from and come back to with ease if needed. Kudos.

Except there are a number of people already running around with 100s of gold in tow + a legendary + commander title. Soooo… they basically have the only things you need gold for and will only help to boost inflation as the game ages.

I will be honest with you. If you don’t want to spend a dime of RL money, you will need LOT’s of gold. Also, there will be this requirement to run dungeons despite the claims there’s a perfectly good open world drop rate for items of any worth in the TP.

People will tell you that you don’t , do not listen to them. Right now you can’t even gear up your characters without gold unless you get REALLY lucky and people are freeing the temples in Orr.

I am thinking they made a new drop adjustment or maybe its just me.. Has anyone noticed yellow Items are not dropping as much. As for the person that says they only need 50 silver that’s good for you but not all the players would agree. I merch all the drops for my gear and you will need good gear and foods if you plan on advancing to far or you will be a ko farm and paying for repairs 100s times a day.. The game is like most games of this type getting needy for cash.. This is not the only MMO I play and others are like me we have and are seeing the changes that are going on industry wide.
The game is like life adapt and change is everyday..
