-I used to play a lot back when the game was first released (Obviously). I made a thief and only got it to 67, but shortly after that I stopped playing for a while. I wanted to make a new character, but I just can’t stick with it enough y’know? I do like playing, the game is fun; its just whenever I try to start something new, its…. “Ugh”. If that makes any sense…

-I love my thief, but I want to try something new. I’m kind of stuck between Mesmer and Warrior. I don’t really know too much about these. How is their WvW potential? I don’t do much of that other PvP.

-What’s the least played class? Why?

Thanks guys!

Pick a Mesmer if you want to WvW, they are effective both in zergs and in roaming situations and have several viable PvP builds to choose from. Mesmer is a rocky road in PvE until about level 30-40, then things really start opening up for them as a class.

Warrior can do some heavy damage, but is a lot harder to play in PvP and usually melts in the zerg before they can do enough damage.

My personal advice would be to play a Mesmer and level some in WvW. Yes you will be upleveled, yes you will get run over sometimes, but you learn a lot about your class that you don’t have to in a crash course at level 80.

The least played class is probably Engineer, because while they have their strong points, overall the class feels broken.

Thanks for that reply. Whenever I used a Mesmer, it did feel a little off. Almost like I was Mesmer-ing wrong. I’ll just try to stick with it and see how I like it.

Honestly, I say stick to the thief, at least until 80. I’m approaching 1k hours on my thief and I’m still finding new ways to play the class.

It’s actually made me almost unable to play other classes due to the cooldown system feeling too clunky, not to mention the awesome mobility of the thief. What weapons were you using if I may ask?

- Altaholism is a curse. My advice is to find something that feel “good enough” and stick with it. For example, I used to be die-hard Engineer, but after being unable to match WvW, PvE and dungeons specs I switched to Warrior (must have 400+ levels by now), then I switched again to Guardian and it was great fun, but in the end I landed on the Mesmer. Its not perfect, but its fun to play with melee, magic and ranged and it share some design with a Guardian (reflections and support) that make it fun in WvW raids.

- Both classes are good in WvW, Warrior is kind of crummy in PvP though. Both are required in WvW raids – the Mesmer for its support skills and the Warrior for his CC and frontlining.

- Engineer I think. Because people cant handle the awesome.

Main reason I want to try a different class is simply because I want different weapons. I agree, the Initiative thing is addicting; you just don’t realize it until you switch lol. when you go to a different class. Everything feels so slow in comparison. I mostly used D/D and P/P. I tried all the other weapon sets and didn’t like them too much. I would’ve used more S/D if it wasn’t as bad as it was..(unless they buffed it?). I’d occasionally switch to a bow every now n then.

I play S/P – SB roaming in WvW and I love it lol, no stealth but high damage in full zerker, but I guess if you’re really not feeling it I’d have to agree to go mesmer.

They would only melt if they are full glass.

I’m usually one of the last standing if our group gets crushed.

It all depends upon the set up.

I agree with Dawdler, pick a main and stick with it. It’s much easier to get ascended items, etc, for 1 toon than 5.

However, if you want to switch mains a mesmer is a great choice.

Edit: To answer your first question about how I stay interested: do things that interest you, don’t do things that don’t, and never ever ever chase some elusive shiny (no legendaries, no skins, etc…)

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

I don’t buy the whole ‘main’ idea. I do however suggest taking one character to 80 then doing more than dabble with other builds. I have had fun on mesmer, hunter and ele in orde of what I consider fun. Not as much fun on guard but it is very hard to kill. My thief I don’t enjoy. Sorry to say but it is a very personal choice what you find fun.

Level the thief to 80 before you consider another toon. The last 10 levels are the easiest, imho, and you’re already almost there. Don’t abandon a lvl 67 character.

WvW is full of endless entertainment possibilities. You can have fun on any class in there, so just go with what you enjoy playing.

Mesmer is a lot of fun, but one of the harder classes to truly master. Thieves can be effective by spamming #2 on your skill bar…or you can become super deadly by really mastering your class.

What kind of things do you see yourself doing in WvW? Zerging? Defense? Roaming? Havok Squads?

Everyone is ignorant to WvW when they first start, so don’t feel alone in that. I would be more than happy to give you a tour. I do it all the time for new players. Once you understand the basics, and get the hang of it, it’s downright addicting.

I also have tremendous difficulty staying interested in the game. There’s just a lot of little things that add up as I play. I haven’t gotten far with any class, my furthest is a level 32 necromancer, but I have tried every class and can tell pretty fast if they’ll be enjoyable.
In my experience mesmers kill brutally slow, just takes forever, and you’d think having all those clones would make it easy but it is brutally slow.
I have found elementalists to be extremely enjoyable because of the MASSIVE weapon skill selection, I run a dagger focus ele and enjoy her very much. Think I was like level 15 before I unlocked every weapon skill. Swapping back and forth through attunements is great and you can conjure even more skills with elemental weapons.
I really enjoyed warrior too because they are very powerful in PvE but their armor is so ugly it is unbearable. Just draped in chainmail for at least the first 20 levels it sucks.
I wouldn’t recommend necromancer because by level 30 you have every single skill you’ll ever use and there’s no real need to weapon swap. They’re just kind of boring.
I got to like level 22 on an engineer and wouldn’t recommend them either. Weapon swapping is a waste though the kits are interesting if not largely useless. They’re a conflicted class where there most powerful skills like the wrench big bomb and grenade field require being too close to enemies while their too weak to withstand much punishment.
I really don’t understand how anyone gets a character to 80 since by 30 you have every skill you’ll ever use. How does that not bore you?

I made five characters, one of each race and each a different profession. I built each character so that it had a style of play that differed from all my other characters. I kept each character within a specific region until he had cleared the every zone in that region, then I rotated them to new regions. All of this allowed me to switch play-styles and scenery on a whim, meaning the game never really grew stagnant.

Pretty much. Crafting in this game, save for a few recipes, has little worth outside of being a great way to level up fast (10 levels per each maxed crafting discipline).

Your only motivation for lvling up is to unlock new skills? How about refining your build and learning how to properly use the ones you have? Or teamwork with guildmates? Or achievement collection? Or just playing content?

PS Your experience with mesmers is way, way off base because they only really get good at PVE after lvl 30 which you didn’t bother going past.

PPS The skills and weapons I used at 30, and the way I used them, are completely different from the ones I use at 80. The environment is different, the tactics are different and the relative effectiveness of various things changes a lot. Just because you’ve unlocked everything doesn’t mean you have finished a class.

Just remember this. Until you’ve unlocked every weapon you really haven’t tried a profession. For example, I didn’t love the mesmer, until I unlocked greatword, sword and torch. The start scepter i felt was meh at best. Then I got a staff. Good, but not as much fun for me.

absolutely this.
It comes down to what you yourself understand and enjoy about the weapon abilities and when to use them. For me I started a mesmer after I had 3 other 80s and from lvl 1 it was a dream. All weapons where good but the greatsword and sword with off-hand pistol where to me a blast. Also for me the ele dagger dagger was meh, the sceptor dagger on the other hand was perfect for my PVE solo preference. The ele staff on the other hand is great in group play of all sorts.

Can mean two things:
- either you simply don’t like GW2
- or you don’t like thief

Try another race/profession combo and see if you like that more.

-I love my thief, but I want to try something new. I’m kind of stuck between Mesmer and Warrior. I don’t really know too much about these. How is their WvW potential? I don’t do much of that other PvP.

Mesmers and thiefs are kings in WvW. Warriors are god-king in PVE.

-What’s the least played class? Why?

Engineer is the least played profession.
Why …
Very steep learning curve and out-of-the-box skillset. Furthermore they have been severely hit by several “balance” updates that nerfed more than they fixed. In the hands of good players they’re probably as good as any other profession but at a much higher player-skill requirement.

Thanks guys!

No problemo.

I play quite a bit yet still consider myself a casual player, with 1300 hours logged I have 5 classes at 80, 4 fully exo’d or better, 3 alts on their way, 1 map completion with 3 others above 50%, and about 10% of that time logged in SPvP and 30% in WvW.

How do I stay interested? I set myself a number of goals I want to complete before I hang up my PC MMORPG boots (unless ESO turns out to be awesome or GW3 crops up and looks good) like having all profession at 80 with at least 3 working builds complete with gear switches, or owning a legendary or high costing weapon(s) on every character.

It’s difficult if your attached to a main, I fully understand that with my beloved Ranger, but leveling other professions has helped me understand not only potential opponents in SPvP or WvW, but a whole multitude of things for my Ranger, and each time I get a character through another map or battle with it in WvW I can use my winnings to fund my main into being the best she can be.

In response to your class question, I would have to say Mesmer, it has so many defensive properties built into it’s attacks you can remain offensive like with your Thief and stomp your opponents and still get out and prepare for your next attack, almost all the other classes don’t get those opportunities to do that. Warrior can be fun, although at it’s most damaging potential, many PvP players know what to look for and how to stop it or at least prevent the damage or survive. If you can wait, eventually that will be forgotten and the Berserker warrior will be back on the rise again when new players come into the game or we’ve all got sick to death of dealing with the new Warrior builds that are cropping up.

Save my heart tomorrow.

As much as I like the game ( and I do), if it weren’t for my guild, I’d probably play a lot less. This game is just more fun with other people along for the ride. While that’s true of most MMOs, it’s particularly true in Guild Wars 2. Why?

Because most MMOs force you to group and communicate at some point. There’s very little of this forced grouping in Guild Wars 2. So if you want to make friends, hang out, have a social experience, you have to do it in a guild.

Honestly, a good guild (the right one for you) can extend a game’s life indefinitely.

Try Engineer. It’s the least-played class and it’s got no cooldown on kit swapping, so you get that fast feel like a thief but without the annoying initiative. Plus, you get a versatile class with a role in PvP, WvW, & PvE. Like any profession, it has its nuances, weaknesses and strengths. Stick with it and I think you’ll find it very fulfilling.

Since all they do is temporary content, nothing at all has changed really, so it’s just the same game it was months ago. The only thing that has actually gotten worse is drop rates and farming. Other than that there have been a few QoL changes for the better and that’s all.

Oh, there are some people with skins you can’t get now.

That’s about it for new content other than guild missions and stuff our guild is too small to do anyway.

Again, it depends completely on your interests and play style. I have yet to find any MMO I could play for four months. Rift and Lotro were the longest, but even they were just meh to me. So it’s just a matter of opinion.

By the same token I was able to play Guild Wars 1 for close to five years. So yeah, different strokes for different folks.

So far, I’ve played this game for over 3000 hours, so I’d say I’ve gotten my money’s worth, even with the money I’ve spent in the cash shop.

Well, I’ve never called the game amazing. Not once. You can look through my posts if you want. I’ve called it good. That’s all. Good, and it needs work. It has the potential to eventually become great…I have said that.

Of course, since you don’t bother to read what I’m actually saying, you’d never know that. lol

No way in hell am I going through your novel of posts, I’ll just take your word for it man…

IMO It’s okay at best, and worth 60 bux, but meh after a play-through or two.

Night and day difference, you and I. I thought both those games sucked, couldn’t play Lotro for more than a few hours and Rift /snore. I played GW1 and absolutely hated it – GW2 was great for a while, but I don’t agree with “Play the game how WE want you to play it, not how YOU want to play it” stance they moved to.

It’s painful to watch a game slowly kill itself with this kind of rhetoric.

That play how you want thing was explained over and over again before the game launched. It didn’t say there’s be no parameters or boundaries at all. It said, basically, you could level up doing all sorts of different stuff and get top level gear. Well that’s still true. You can do dailies and get ascended stuff. Or Guild Missions. Or the fractals, or now WvW. You can level up doing just about anything but SPvP and you can SPvP without leveling up at all.

This game gives players a whole lot more freedom than other theme park MMOs where the only real way to gear up is raids.

I suppose you’re talking about WoW, which if it is, it hasn’t been that way for years. People don’t just play games to play, there is an objective, while that is subjective it, for the most people play for reward. Score, loot, shinies, you name it, that is the name of the game. Otherwise we’d still be enjoying Pong, back and forth all day, no winner no loser, no need for any other game.

Right, that’s why Skyrim was popular. Because everyone plays for shineys.

Did it occur to you that most people play MMOs for shineys because that’s all MMOs offered them and other types of players might like them if they offered something different?

Title^

My interest in the game comes from tpvp, wvw, and my guilds, as well as working towards my legendary /shiver.

I recommend you play a warrior. A lot of my friends love to lead their warriors into large open field conflicts in WvW and it is the only thing i regret not being able to reliably do on my toons.

I have the same issue, man. I’ve always wanted to level my main character up (Engineer), mainly because it’s what I want to do in real life, and because the Engineer seems fun.

But to be honest, I enjoyed playing Guardian more, but I wish I could equips bows or something with it, and/or have an ally like a Ranger, but not have to use medium armour. I guess with Warrior, I can use pistols and rifles, but eh.

One who prefers their own Elysium, a collected being of brilliant ambience and nurturing.
