Play it for about 3 more months and then decide if you want to get people to play it with you. It took me about 4 months to really see the game for what it is.

I kinda know what you mean. For some reason when I try to explain it it takes ages, lol.
I try to stick with what I like about the game and the “story” I tell changes every time.

(I know, this doesn’t help one bit, grin. But you’re not the only one at least )

Honestly my real life friends aren’t gamers. Or they say they are because they play Facebook and iPhone games. I’m not sure how I’d even begin to explain GW2 to most of them.

But I have recommended it on a few forums, usually by emphasising that it’s an MMO with no subscription fee, no open-world PVP and no pressure to play daily simply to keep up with everyone else.

Because that’s what made it (and GW1 before it) appeal to me originally. The commitment of a subscription fee, especially on top of the cost of buying a game, can feel intimidating when you’re first considering buying a game and don’t even know how much time you’ll want to give to it. Likewise while the idea of having other people sharing the game-world with me is exciting I know from real-world experience that given the opportunity a lot of people are not going to be nice and friendly to complete strangers and in-game they would be more interesting in attacking weaker players and stealing their stuff than helping them out (see the early days of UO for an example). Knowing you can’t be attacked by other players unless you choose to go to a separate area specifically for that purpose is a big bonus to me.

And I definitely do not want to feel like I have to keep playing whether I want to or not and devote a lot of that time to grinding new gear just to be able to do any of the other content. Before anyone starts yes there are tiers in GW2 and yes Ascended items and Legendaries are not quick and easy to get. But you don’t even need exotics for the majority of content and can get a full set of temple armor relatively easily if you save up your karma. (I had more than enough as soon as I hit level 80 and I haven’t even done the daily regularly.) But more importantly in the 8 months since launch they’ve added part of 1 new tier and have said there are no plans to add more any time soon. Unlike some games I can be pretty confident that if I stop playing for a week or a month, or keep playing but want to explore starter areas or level a new character, I won’t come back to find I’m way behind everyone else and need to struggle to catch up before I can even think about playing any new content.

There are a lot of other things I like about the game but they’re more subtle and you really need to get into it first in order to appreciate it. Those are the things I’ve found get the most interest from people who might consider GW2 (or an MMO in general) but aren’t sure.

Only need to buy it once and never again spend money on it.

And the fools mostly believe me.

Well, I think downscaling is a huge plus, because you and your friends could play together without having to worry, that one in your group is to high for the rest of the party. So everyone can have his/her own levelingspeed and still play together with his/her friends.

I was trying to convince a friend of mine for months, then the free trial weekend came along. He’s been playing the game ever since.

If you can’t (or don’t know how) to convince your friend, wait until another trial comes around and invite them.

Beat me to it, it’s very pretty if you have a beefy PC.

The rest of the game is wholly questionable though and why it’s languishing so.
