Let’s say the man in charge of security in your city has reliable information that a terrorist organization is planning to burn both the city’s orphanage and hospital simultaneously.

In fact, we’re not just talking “reliable information,” but rather an undercover agent has witnessed the planning and preparations of this plot. The exact time and date for when these arsons will take place is known.

Upon hearing of the terrorist’s plans, the chief of security arrogantly expresses that the terrorists are fools who don’t realize he can easily deal with two simultaneous arsons.

Then, when the time comes, security forces fail and the hospital (or maybe orphanage) is burnt to the ground killing dozens inside.

The security chief not only keeps his job, but a top government official tells him,

“You had more than enough notice to stop this terrorist plot and yet a bunch of people got horribly burnt to death, but hey, no one can be perfect!”

TLDR: I think I’ve keyfarmed too much.

Really bugged me as well when I walked into his office and Anise was going on about how it wasn’t his fault.

He shouted about how he can defend both places at once because the gods invented teamwork and then he sent a complete overkill force with me and one guy with a token force to the other place?

Yes it is your fault Logan. Those little orphans are dead because of you. You could have saved them but you didn’t. The Seraph are way bigger than that little bandit group, you had enough troops to cover both places. You could have even evacuated the buildings that you knew were going to be attacked in advance, it might have tipped off the bandits but it would have definitely saved them. You didn’t and that’s on you.

Because it takes time to mobilize people and they didn’t have enough time to get enough people. They just barely caught both guys in the act. If you know about stuff early enough you can rally your forces. If you have to run out the door NOW, by the time your rally them it’s too late.

Our characters are mere peasants compared to the other powers at work in the Guild Wars universe, though. We’re very novice (maybe adept) level. Eh, even suspending disbelief for “heroic fantasy,” the story still falls short. If Logan is feeling guilty (as most people commenting think he should), then maybe Anise could have said, “right, you probably should have done more; let that be a lesson for next time” — which, by the way, sounds more in character for her personality in the PS and especially during the LS.

When certain officials in high places have a vested interest in discrediting someone, they make his claims fail. As Anise habitually knows more than she lets on at all times, she may in fact have some reason to consider it might actually not be his fault in truth. (That, however, I cannot be sure of.)

And Toxsa, Jennah dying would be a very bad thing for the humans of Tyria, as it would put people who care more about their own interests than working with the orders and other races to defeat globally-threatening dragons.

This is completely aside from the fact it ends the Doric bloodline, as, for all that Doric was an important guy and did some important stuff, I’m not sure there is any special significance to descending from him, except as proof of royalty, which Adelbern proved was not necessary, back before he went crazy.

As for Jennah herself, she clearly is capable and competent at her job, despite the Ministry’s attempts to make her appear otherwise. One need only see the exchange between her, Logan, and Caudecus at the end of CM story to see that.

The shining blade has the job of protecting the Queen.

However… Logan got the job cause he is the secret gigolo of the Queen, so when the queen dies and the new hier to throne is installed, he/she might very well be resuming command his- or herself as is custom

Adelbern was a descendant of Doric. He was not the descendant most directly in line for the throne at the time, but he was of royal blood. And Jennah is not the last. There is also Commander Samuelsson in Ebonhawke, and there could well be others out there somewhere, both in Ascalon and in Kryta. Doric’s family tree has lots of branches.

I’m rather surprised that this point wasn’t brought up when Rytlock tried to use Sohothin. The prophecy said that Sohothin could end the Foefire in the hands of the rightful king of Ascalon. Rytlock ignored the condition on the prophecy, so it isn’t any wonder that his attempt failed. It might have been otherwise had he enlisted the aid of Samuelsson.

Not Logan’s fault Francis was inept at getting people out of a building, seeing as the PC always succeeds at their part and confronts the bads while they’re still inside. Clearly there was proper mobilization to allow an expected success, but Francis just fails on all fronts.

Logan almost single-handedly carries the destruction of Zhaitan throughout the entire story via saving Rytlock’s life, saving the pact’s life and then soloing his way back to a reunion, and one of the DE members died when he wasn’t there. How does he still have a job? Hmm, it seems like a recurring theme through this and especially 1st season of living story is that we can’t seem to stop anything from happening; just cleaning up the mess and watch as people die. However, given how politics, corruption, and bureaucracy works this might actually have some dose of realism.

The bloodline importance is twofold. First, it was Doric’s blood that was used in bloodstone(s) as a catalyst for sealing the magic, and it is his blood (or those of his descendants) that can unseal it. Second, due to his sacrifice, his bloodline got divine blessing as the royal line of Tyria. And humanity still seems to be strongly tied to their gods, even after long time of their silence.

Now, it is also true, that the first part may not be that important anymore, due to the heavy-handed retcons the lore suffered between GW1 and GW2.

Logan’s good at his job, but he’s not perfect. And yes, he makes a mistake in the story and people die, but it bothers him. Someone else has to tell him to let it go, and he only moves on after he (and you) KILL the person behind it all. He’s upset about Snaff, too, even if he would make the same choice if he had it to do over again.

He also has another job that most people don’t notice. He’s the bright and shiny target. People gunning for the queen don’t worry about the Countess, or about Jennah’s own magical power. They worry about Logan. He plays the target and takes the hits, so the others can have that forewarning when Logan’s attacked first.

I’m pretty sure Logan was supposed to be a flawed, but ultimately sympathetic hero.

But the actual dialogue writers ended up making him into a whiny teenage boy, who’s treated as such (for example when he’s admonished when he complains about having to “be the burned one”)? Does anyone have sympathy for him when he’s pining for the queen like a pimpled 13 year old? Was this a writer fail or did they do it on purpose?

Rurik was supposed to be a hero too right? And players cheered his death.

Does anyone have sympathy for him when he’s pining for the queen like a pimpled 13 year old? Was this a writer fail or did they do it on purpose?

Rurik was supposed to be a hero too right? And players cheered his death.

Agree.

I’m sure the writers were trying for a bit of comic relief, but it rings false. He’s the head of the Seraph. He’s supposed to be a seasoned fighter, a mature man in love with the Queen, someone who protects and guards the city and the realm. Then he whines about a temporary disguise when setting up a trap to uncover Commander Serentine’s role in the alliance with the Ministry and the bandits. This sort of dialog weakens his character in its attempt to be amusing during a serious episode. What the writers need to remember is that not all characters need to be funny and that humor should be used carefully and in a way that doesn’t lessen their character, unless they mean for it to do so.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

What? Yes, we made fun of his suicidal aggression that dragged us into overwhelming amounts of aggro during certain missions, but that was probably more a matter of the AI trying to maintain adrenalin at all costs than a character flaw on his part. Making jokes about his fighting style and some of his facepalm-worthy dialog is a long way from cheering his death, though. He had initiative and about ten times the brains of his idiot father. I was glad when we finally got a chance for some revenge on that buzzard Dagnar.

The only moments where i’ve actually liked Logan are in CoF when he’s with Rytlock and before you get on the airship to fight Zhaitan where he says “Long ago I failed all of you. I left you behind to fight. Now you need to leave me behind so you can carry the fight forward.”

“Would you kindly?”

He still has a job because the queen isn’t dead yet.

She keeps dropping not so subtle hints to get him to sod off, I mean she is the most powerful Mesmer on Tyria I don’t think there’s much he can do to help her anyway xD Plus Anise is always there too… Logan is kinda redundant.

Because it takes time to mobilize people and they didn’t have enough time to get enough people. They just barely caught both guys in the act. If you know about stuff early enough you can rally your forces. If you have to run out the door NOW, by the time your rally them it’s too late.

One me was enough to save the orphanage. One Logan, or Anise, or, pretty much, anyone should have been enough to save the hospital (or vice versa).

One Luke Skywalker was what it took to destroy the death star, but no one else could have done it. Welcome to heroic fantasy.

Our characters are mere peasants compared to the other powers at work in the Guild Wars universe, though. We’re very novice (maybe adept) level. It’s a game and fantasy (obviously), but surely there would have been another intervening factor such an actual situation like this presented itself within the confines and parameters of this universe.

Exactly. One you WASN’T enough. Sure, maybe in the game mechanically your character did most of the damage, but I don’t think it takes a genius to understand that Logan being there was supposed to have played a large part in why whatever objective you chose was saved, and Logan NOT being there was the reason the other one failed.

This large groups of bandits did not fall to one silly peasant. They fell to one heroic peasant working alongside a hero.

I’m endlessly amused, even three years later, how people come into these anti-Logan threads with everything already decided and frame every thought based on that decision rather than looking at things objectively. Perhaps from now on we shouldn’t allow low level characters to have to fight at all.

EDIT: That all in mind, I think they wrote Logan’s character terribly. I just also think people approach him determined to see his character as even worse than it already is.

And yes, he makes a mistake in the story and people die, but it bothers him.

Oh as long as he feels bad I guess that makes it all better :P

Nope, but would you have liked him more if he just shrugged it off and that was it? Or placed all the blame on his underling?

He moved on because he had to, there was still a job to do. Should a firefighter or police officer quit because they failed to save someone even though they tried to save them? Or should they learn and become better, so they CAN save the next one?

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
