Today, on the Guild Wars 1 timeline, Guild Wars: Factions was released. After the same time, how do you think Guild Wars 2 holds up?

Saw this on Reddit (stickied) and thought I should share it here.

Gives a good sense of what ppl think/want from gw2 when compared to gw1.

GW1 one year mark was superior. I was excited for faction, and it was excellent and different. New continent to explore, new classes and a new story campaign.

GW2: Living story about a crazy woman with pirates with a goal of doing what exactly? Just cause annoyance because of she is crazy? (The living stories are so SHALLOW)

It’s like asking “Which is better, sugar or salt?” or “Which is better, movies or television series?”

They are different games in different genres. I like MMOs so I like GW2 better.

I think it’s great that they are continuing to support GW1 for those who prefer it even though very few people are playing it these days.

I’m fairly certain that the ANET that makes GW2 isn’t the one that made GW1 (or even the current GW2) I recall seeing a link a long time ago comparing the employment list.

If anyone has the source for it please do make a thread about it as I see this is something the public would want to/needs to know about. (I cannot find it)

I know I wouldn’t be playing GW2 if they had made it more like GW1. I also know my friends and I have put in hundreds more hours into GW2 than GW1.

I will say that GW1 clearly had superior competitive PvP at this point, I hope GW2 can do something about that. It seems like it might have been better to launch with any sPvP content and had it held off until they could bring it in fully supported.

I don’t blame it on Gear though. I blame it on them just ignoring/breaking so many core elements of the game that were supposed to stand the test of time. I could barely even finish a Dungeon today b/c now the servers are starting to break too.

GW1 was one of the buggiest, most shallow games I’ve ever played, and I’ve played it since 2005.

Terrible voice acting. Terrible story… Thousands of fetch quests and a dull, lifeless, poorly rendered game world.

I would never go back to GW1. Even with GW2’s many flaws, it’s still a vastly superior gameplay experience.

To be honest, I think I wouldn’t play GW2 anymore if it wasn’t called Guild Wars and if I wasn’t into lore (not that we get much of it, but I love the world they created). I didn’t complain when they added ascended, I didn’t complain for “every little thing” but I often was disappointed in their decisions and still I continued to support them (I’ve spent a lot of money both in GW1 and 2) in hope that it will get better… I don’t know GW2 kinda feels like a love/hate relationship to me, there are a lot of things about it that I don’t like but still I keep coming back to it.

GW1 was good, but I don’t thInk it would survive the market if it was released today. GW lore was always really shallow for me (say, compared to Warcraft lore) so I can’t really see much of a difference in that.

I kinda like having Ascended gear as it gives a point of crafting and doing stuff like JPs which are otherwise dead content.

Having said that, the LS so far has been really, really, unimmersive and Im missing stuff like guild capes. Also I still don’t understand why would doing something like champion zergfarming give you better rewards than high level fractals.

I can’t compare WoW lore to GW lore as I never played WoW. That said the lore in GW seemed deep to me if you really looked into it in game and on the wiki. There was history and politics and foreshadowing and religion. The problem I see in the transition to GW2 is that while the game world is based on that lore, most everything moving forward story wise is not. There are so many unanswered storylines from the old lore that could have been further fleshed out along with the awakening of the dragons that hasn’t been yet or won’t be. And so many things that seemed to have disappeared over 200 years.

Instead what we do have are Aetherblades and a crazy Sylvari.

Edit: Sorry if this was off topic, just replying to a few other comments in the thread.

I think someone was right when they said that Living Story so far has been relatively shallow, if not entirely stereotypical. We regularly see villains like Canach and Scarlet that have very little back story established, that appear out of nowhere and/or are evil simply for evil’s sake. Compared to the moral gray area in the war between Charr and Human, Shiro’s tortured soul or how in Nightfall the ends may or may not have justified the means (helping Palawa Joko) I find Guild Wars 2’s Personal Story and Living Story way too simplistic. But I think Guild Wars 2 is better in a lot of ways, and do believe it is an overall better product.

The combat in Guild Wars 2 is preferential to me. I didn’t mind what Guild Wars 1 had, but 2’s more active style of play is very refreshing to me in a genre littered with stationary boss battles (which Guild Wars 1 had plenty of). I think it’s the number one reason why I continue to play it, since I can’t find a game with a combat system as attractive to me as this one that promotes mobility while still feeling like a “numbers game” RPG. I simply find Guild Wars 2’s combat more engaging than its predecessor’s.

But the other big reason is the open world. Guild Wars 1 was full of invisible walls and instanced content. There was some really powerful scenery in that game, like trekking across the Desolation for the first time or seeing the Jade Sea frozen completely. But unless I was doing a mission, I never really got a chance to just “hang out” in it all and absorb the scenery. Whether or not you can reduce it to hammering signs or killing the same world bosses forever and ever, Guild Wars 2 simply gives you reason to return to locations all around the map, making it feel much more alive.

I’m very happy with Guild Wars 2, and I look forward to what the next year has in store. Just my two cents.

Terrible voice acting.

Factions, in my opinion, had some really bad voice acting, the worst voice acting in all the original campaigns. I thought the voice acting in Eye of the North, on the other hand, was pretty darned good. Watching the cutscenes from Eye of the North in sequence makes for (pardon me for waxing slightly hyperbolic here) a quality cinematic experience.

Jora and the nornbear. Vekk and Gadd. Pyre and Gwen. Good stuff.

There are certain aspects of MMO’s in general that make a good foundation. More gear is one of them. How it’s done, however, is a whole other thing entirely.

I seem to remember reading that you didn’t have to do dungeons to do all the content available, however, the dungeons would provide the more unique/awesome looking gear (stat-wise it would be the same).
- This was how I hoped GW2 would be. Like GW1, getting the armor set with the best stats wasn’t hard, anyone could do it just by playing through the game. I thought that GW2 would have a lot of the aspects that make MMO’s great, such as raids, where the people looking for a harder challenge would get their thirst quenched, but that the gear would be purely for show and not stat-wise make them superior.

- I thought that there would be a world filled up with lore, but it is hard to find (I’d almost go as far as to say that you have to grind to get lore in GW2).
- Quests worked well as a story telling aspect and yeah, sure, they needed improvement. The quests where you’d get the “Orcs/centaur/baddies are attacking us!” and you’d go out and see that they were just chillin’ are better designed as Dynamic Events. However, I miss the quests that would send you out into ancient ruins to get an old artifact or something like that. It doesn’t even need to be a quest, it could be that a player found an old book that told of some ancient treasure and the players could choose to try and hunt down this treasure.

- All in all, I like GW2 but I think that it is sometimes too busy being “different” instead of being true to the ideas that were supposed to make this game great.
- GW1 took its core ideas and added new things in each campaign released. It took the core, made improvements and added new things to it that would expand upon it without straying from the original intention. Players knew exactly what to expect from a GW1 experience, and a campaign would mean improvements as well.

I’m not sure what to expect from GW2, but I’m excited to see where they take it.
- I just hope that the new zones and the remaining continents will introduce improvements to the core gameplay, because if it’s the same content but in a different looking zone..? No improvement to the mechanics will mean that I won’t expect any improvements or innovative ideas from GW2.

The ANet that made GW is not the ANet that currently makes GW2.
Hell, you can even spot the difference of design philosophies between when they marketed GW2 and now. Such a 180 they did.

Great Point.

Also. even look at the class design with gw2, where you have 1 class who’s design revovles around Stealth 24/7 (perma-stealth) with high critic attacks in all stats.

Seriously

Total Shame.

I’ve been having ongoing discussions with the guilds about how the new Arena.net Intentionally dishonoring their forefathers guild wars 1 Arena.net beautiful visions and dreams.

Their forefather would never embraced the dream of supporting tyranny, oppresion, irony nor to even once; justify it.. in the name of “Balance”.

Not once in guild wars 1, you would here of a class who can perma-kill in 1-kittens, kitten not even having a class who can reset fights at will.

As a ranger class, this may shock you or not; we had a dev. called Robert.H who lately was fired for revolting againt Injustice of class balance.

He was the last forefathers’ Arena.net dev who dreamed and envisioned of carrying-on the wonderfulness and the beatiful world of guild wars 1 to guild wars 2 but the new Arena.net found him as a threat.

So they thought they could Program him into their Elitist, Ego-Frenzy and Monopolistic visions of guild wars 2.

Well it seemed to work for a while until Robert.H, heard of his forefathers calls for revolution and resistance.

Can you imagine having 1 person fighting the corrupt world on his own?

Well that was Robert.H

In conclusion..

As the saying goes, “the majority wins”, the new Arena.net all gathered and retaliated against him and fired him.

Such tragedy.

With the new Arena.net, we witness the rise of elitism, monopolism and a broken world.

Missing you dearly,

Guild Wars Forefathers.
