Q:

So I knew that a ton of resources had been poured into living story, but were all the other teams completely disbanded/reallocated in order to focus on that?

I recently stumbled upon this thread in the forums and found this:
“The dungeon team was disbanded quite early on and amalgamated in to the living story teams.”

I’ve been thinking a lot on what my favorite ingame activities are:
- Dungeons
-JPs
- Finding fantastic outfits to mix’n’match
- exploring nooks and crannies in different zones with no particular purpose other than to see what’s there (“GUYS LOOK I FOUND A CAVE!” “What’s in it?” “Nothing but it’s an awesome cave!”)
- roleplay

And I’ve been frustrated that while we’ve seen SOME things added that remain in the game it just feels very sparse compared to the bulkload of living story stuff that was pushed through.

Is this why we haven’t seen much development in these areas? Will we be getting a dedicated dungeon team back along with an art team to design armor to go with the dungeon? Was there a dedicated JP team? Are there any official statements regarding these things? Basically, are there teams that are/will be dedicated to building things outside of the living story for those of us who want to see the rest of the game expanded upon?

Thanks!

A:

We do not know how they’re split.

We do know the living story team is made of 4 teams and they’re just a subset of the overall team working on content. We also know there are 2 big projects going on since at least january 2013.

Technically I dont believe we even know that dungeon’s team was disbanded. I may have missed something but I dont think it was ever officially confirmed. It was mostly a theory the community came up because of what happened to a content designer that used to work for the dungeon team.

Ironically enough, the dungeons that people claims to be the best (Pirate base and Molten Facility) were created by a living story team rather than a dungeon team, so maybe the choice to merge the dungeon team with living story team was a good call?

Why do we need to know this?

Because I want to know if the things I love doing the most have anyone working on them at all. I was super excited when the Aether path came out! And I was really hoping that there would be an armor set associated with it. I’m okay if it takes a long time for something to come out – I want the devs to feel like they got it just right and I want to feel like even if I don’t agree with them that they gave it their best. I’ll probably keep running the old dungeons/JPS/exploring old areas, but this is some of the stuff I love most about this game.

Unless you have money in the business – they DON’T have to tell you anything (and even if you do, they still don’t have to tell you anything). It is more of the ‘I am ENTITLED’ to this information because I am a player. Sorry no.

So, you want to feel good about this game. Having this information gives you nothing towards that (see my ‘ENTITLED’ comment above).

I mean, GM, Ford, Toyota, etc. don’t tell you how many people are involved with the design and engineering of a new car. The same can be said for here.

Microsft doesn’t tell you how many people are involved with the production of the Xbox one. Why would you need to know to own one? Does it make you feel any better/

Not trolling, I just don’t see why this information is important for other than complaining?

Gemstore + Living story is where the majority of anet’s focus is. Thats it.
Theres only a small spvp team outside that.
Class balancing? nah. WvW team? Hardly.

The money and focus lies in gemstore + living story because apparently thats what this playerbase reaallllly loves…..

This.

Asking for some insight from the Dev team is acceptable (but does not require them to answer). Acting like the company OWES you an answer is not acceptable (I’m not stating the OP was doing this….but the general attitude leans that way).

“The dungeon team was disbanded quite early on and amalgamated in to the living story teams.”

That only means that the dungeon team is working along with the living story team, instead of just focus on the current dungeons and fractals.
So they are still making new dungeons but now tied to the living story, like we are almost sure that there will be a dungeon in the Maguuma Wastes, the Bloodstone Fen source, and we know that the next living story will lead us towards the Maguuma, sooo … I expect to see that dungeon soon enough.

That map is VERY old, it is the map in the GW2 novels, and those were released almost a year before the game release, so add that Bloodstone Fen dungeon icon could be a overlook from the Anet, but that dungeon is in their plans for a long time for sure.

Curious minds want to know. I think it’s as simple as that.
Sure, A.net doesn’t need to give anyone an answer, but players and journalists are well within their right to ask questions about this kind of thing because we’re simply curious. I don’t see why you misconstrue curiosity as entitlement, some of us are just very interested in the “inside baseball” of game development and want to ask questions related to that.

I didn’t read any hostility or presumptions from Allaraina’s question so it didn’t seem like there was any complaint angle to the question. I think you may just be assuming the worst and being overly defensive of A.net. Let me ask you, do you have any money or stake in this?

I’ll openly admit that I have no stake in either, just genuine curiosity. Both about the games industry and the sociology of internet forums. The latter means I am really curious about your rush to defend a huge development studio as if they needed defending. Any insight would help.

As with anyone who wants specific things added to GW2 (or any game), you are in wait-and-see mode. A by-product of the interaction between developers and consumers in MMO’s is that the companies do not announce what’s coming until they feel reasonably sure they will be able to deliver. Players never let them live it down when they don’t. This ensures that announcements of what’s coming seldom occur far in advance of arrival.

It doesn’t benefit Anet to release how they’ve distributed their teams.

While those who are simply interested will read it and leave it at that, I can honestly see a lot of the forum community twisting the numbers / structure to ‘prove a point’, or they’d just accuse Anet of lying about it and falsifying it to make them look good.

I still think you’re reading too much into her post and I think you’re over-sensitive to entitlement. It is not entitled to ask a question especially when they’re fairly neutral questions. Allaraina doesn’t even mention her happiness, just opinions on what she enjoys in the game. The questions were asked in a very eloquent and polite manner. She didn’t ask a loaded question like “Is this why the game has fallen to kitten recently?”

She does not demonstrate any sense that she demands an answer and the questions are pretty open ended, so much so that one of your peers was able to provide a sufficient enough answer. They were questions based on a statement made in the past by a.net regarding development, so I am at a loss as to how you somehow got an air of entitlement from that post.

That said I don’t mean to jump to her defence specifically, she can definitely defend herself, I am just curious what leads you to those particular conclusions and how your definition of entitlement varies greatly from the commonly accepted definition. (see: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/entitlement) It looks to me like this has nothing to do with rights or privilege in any meaningful way, just knowledge about where the game is headed without any expectation of an answer.

How can it not?
We all look for a game thats more or less fits with our idea of how it should be, not how it fits with somebody elses idea. What would be the point of that?

Let’s say Toyota puts out statistics on who’s working on what.

20% of the company is working on greener emissions.
30% is on R and D on new products.
10% is on marketing
etc, etc.

Well, there’s a very large amount of people who are loyal to Toyota who want a sports line to be released, and they only have 5% of the company working on it. They’ll start asking for more resources to be allocated to the sports line because greener emissions has people to spare. Meanwhile the greener emissions people start balking at that because they don’t want a loss of resources to what they consider important.

In the end it becomes problematic for Toyota who wants to please both groups but also has to answer to their stockholders who have already heard why resources are allocated the way they are and what Toyota’s fiscal plan for the quarter is. If Toyota changes the allocation, they now have to answer to the stockholders who may withdraw some of their investment because Toyota can’t stick to a static, defined, agreed-on plan.

In the meantime the customers are split with animosity to one group or another for getting in the way at what they want out of a car company, and then take that anger out on Toyota for not ceding to their wants/desires over another group that Toyota is now perceived as favoring.

While customers may be curious, there’s no real upside to Toyota putting out those specifics as public knowledge, and most companies will not do so, not just car companies or game companies.

Microsft doesn’t tell you how many people are involved with the production of the Xbox one. Why would you need to know to own one? Does it make you feel any better/

Not trolling, I just don’t see why this information is important for other than complaining?

Im not sure I understand. If I want to know how many in toyota whos working on making cars “greener”, and Im not satisfied with the answer, I dont buy a toyota.
What do entitlement have to do with it?

Because he said it would ‘ADD’ to his happiness in game – that is ENTITLEMENT pure and simple. Does that mean if he doesn’t get it he won’t be happy? No it means that HIS IDEA of how A.Net should be developing the game is right – that is the classic definition of entitlement.

Entitlement. You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

en·ti·tle·ment
noun \-?t?-t?l-m?nt\

: the condition of having a right to have, do, or get something

: the feeling or belief that you deserve to be given something (such as special privileges)

: a type of financial help provided by the government for members of a particular group

Let’s look at the bolded – he wants to know so he can be happy in game? What has one to do with the other unless he has an opinion and wants it verified – that is the classic definition of entitlement.

Nobody but A.Net, NCSoft needs to know this information, his wanting to know it is an entitlement attitude – I play this game so I need to know how A.Net is doing this – that is classic……

How so though? There is no entitlement there because if her questions were answered by A-net it would be public information. There would be no special privilege or treatment gained. I think you have a very vague understanding of entitlement and are misinterpreting the definitions to suit your argument.

Unless you have money in the business – they DON’T have to tell you anything (and even if you do, they still don’t have to tell you anything). It is more of the ‘I am ENTITLED’ to this information because I am a player. Sorry no.

Where did he say he needed to know? He didn’t demand information from ANet. He didn’t claim he deserved that his whims be catered to. He asked a question. By your logic, anyone asking a question of anything is somehow entitled. Again, you don’t seem to know what that word means despite having the definition right in front of you.

This is the main issue I have with this forum’s white knights. In many cases they attack people for the slightest perceived criticism of their treasured game; often because of their own overly sensitive nature and horrific misinterpretation of posts.

While customers may be curious, there’s no real upside to Toyota putting out those specifics as public knowledge, and most companies will not do so, not just car companies or game companies.

Yes, but that is their decision. If the answer, or lack of, makes me buy a different car, thats my decision. I dont see what entitlement has to do with it.

Never said it did. I’m simply expressing why they don’t. I thought that’s what you were asking for clarification on.

Thx for trying to help
My entitled-comment wasnt directed at you, just a clarification of what I ment.
I agree with your post, and your reasoning is probably why toyota ( I think) some years ago told how much money they would spend on researching greener engines at that time, though not spesicially what fuel or how big part of the total researchteam it was.
Numbers was big, but no-one knew if it was 10% or 90%, wich would have told more about the dedication.

Clearly not. One can ask what will happen in a game without feeling that one is entitled to know, or entitled to content that one prefers. While I agree that the developer does not owe information to players, I see no harm in asking if they have said anything, in expressing an opinion about what one would like to see, or in stating the sorts of content one prefers.

I’m not sure why your so up in arms about this. Save it — and the accusations of entitlement — for posts which are actually demonstrating entitlement, according to the real definition of the word.
