How is RP played?
There are areas on some RP servers where RP is everywhere, map, say, etc. but from what I’ve seen on TC, it is usually in /emote and /say. Basically, map chat is generally Out of character, so people just talk about whatever. In certain places, though, /say is in character, (for instance, TC divinity’s reach) so you generally wander on along, participate if you want, or walk on.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
Most RPers I see just sit around some cliff or house nodding at each other.
Like a play, your characters do and say things through chat and emotes.
….ssooooo….it’s basically silly and pointless? by this description^^^ it seems like an incredibly forced ‘stories around the campfire’ kind of thing…or am I missing something?

Well, people come up with back stories for their characters, and usually in guild, interact with each other. It’s a different way of playing. Like, some people like RPing because it adds more story to the game, which gw2 might be lacking. It’s a way to have a personal story that you sort of guide.
Example: my guild used to have these RP sessions in DR where we all used the inquest I tonic and planned terrible plans of taking over DR. People around us joined in, listened, and other such things while our terrible evil plans were foiled. It’s a way of having fun, making your own stories, and using everything you have around you as a prop.

RP can be done in a ton of different ways.
The most common seems to be sitting in a general area and working through a story with other people. It takes twists and turns according to ALL of the people interacting.
However, a bit more rare is RPing while actually playing the game. This is harder to do, so I suspect that is why it is not as common.
Even more rare are those who do PvP (including WvW with GW2) and RP.
It is only really limited by the game and the imagination of the participants. You basically just come up with who your in-game character actually is (history, personality, etc) and play it out. OOC (out of character) is denoted in several different ways, and as long as its clear is OOC, you can usually do it as much as you want depending on the people you are RPing with. Double parenthesis like this: ((this is one way to denote OOC chat)) are a common way.
I have never personally enjoyed participating in “tavern” RP, though it adds an incredible atmosphere to the game world.

Plans were foiled? So ALL that effort and you didn’t actually sieze control of DR?

Well, it was very pinky and the brain esque. xD plus, since they were tonics, most of the participants were bookahs anyway.

In STO, there’s a chat channel for folks to respond to red alerts and players’ needs for assistance in-character. I think it would be entertaining, at least now and again, to ham it up when world bosses spawn and the like. I mean, like, as a group and not the kinds of things I have been known to shout randomly in MMOs during raids or adventuring.
In any case, I suspect you’ll need to find a group first, and how RP is done may differ from situation to situation/group to group. Map/zone chat is likely to never be used for that, so unless you happen to run into something happening locally...
I remember exploring Ebonhawke and finding several people hanging out. You never know what might be going on in those bars and taverns throughout towns and cities of Tyria unless you go looking :P
It’s just drama club, acting. There’s nothing to “play” as it has nothing to do with gaming.

Thanks guys! This really helped me understand how it worked. I looked at it as the whole server playing the game and playing their character throughout the whole game rarely breaking the chat from RP. Not specified small groups hanging out in one area coming up with stories. Unfortunately the way I thought it was looked a lot more intriguing and fun but I can see most people joining an RP server not caring if its RP and not participating so it would be extremely difficult for most of the server to play the same game at the same time :p.

That you don’t enjoy what they do doesn’t give you any right to dismiss it on your own terms. They are playing the game their way, even if you wouldn’t at all enjoy it.
How silly or narrow-minded to infer that RPers are not even playing the game-newsflash, you are not a better player for not being a role-player.
