How is the population doing?
No one can tell you how many years a game has, because no one has a crystal ball. But the population seems quite healthy in every game mode.
There was a bit of a content drought recently, but with the July patch, a lot of people have started playing to experience the new content. This is normal for the game.
People take breaks, they come back as new content is released.
However, even at it’s lowest ebb, there were plenty of people playing.

Sounds promising. The reason I asked is I would get disappointed if I started back up and it shut down not long after lol.

Not going to shut down anytime soon. (Recent revenue to NCSOFT is down a lot, but they are talking about expansions)
Wherever I go, I see plenty of people.
Seems busier the times of day I play than it was six months ago. The last two major updates seemed to invigorate, at least for a while, the downturn I saw post HoT.
RIP City of Heroes
Megaserver hide any populaton “issues” in pve. But IMO the game is still healthy wth lots of players in all modes. GW2 is probably still ranked in the top 3 (western) MMOs.
The game population is just fine for its age, no matter were you go there are plenty of people. It can sometimes be challenging to find people to do some of the older content (like dungeons) but this can be mitigated by joining a helpful guild, making in-game friends, or just being patient.
Ignore the periodic “Chicken Little” threads claiming that the game is “dead”. These tend to be by people that are just bored, looking for attention, don’t understand the issues, or are pursuing some personal vendetta to spread discontent.
Ultimately though, the best way to find out is to learn for yourself. Your post suggests that you already have the game so why not just log in and check it out
Population really did seem to drop a lot during the last year when the focus was only on raids and no other content added at all. Now when Season 3 finally started it’s getting busyer again.
A lot depends on how they’re going to handle the game from now on.
Every mmo has players leaving then returning when there is no content to play. I doubt gw2 is immune to that despite what anyone else would have you believe. The mega servers (disguised server mergers) mean you will never really pop figures. Other games tell you how many are in a map and how many instances of that map exist. gw2 how ever hides everything. If you find the game worth the time play it. If not there are more games than gamers out there so you have a plehtora to chose from.
Also adding that this game do not have a gear grind so your if you get ascended gear it wont be outdated if you leave for a few weeks or months. This means you can take short breaks or long breaks and then come back and still be competitive not having to grind your way 10 different raid tiers, notoriety for 10 new factions and what else you missed when you were gone like in other mmo’s. This means that people come and go and comes back.
I logged in for the first time after a few months. GW2 for some reason just never stays at the top of my MMORPG list even though it’s a great game. I wish it had some stuff like housing etc. But anyway…
I walked through one of the major towns and it was pretty populated which is encouraging.
Now that I know their upload schedule, I’m taking the time to finish some other games.
lately I haven’t done much but grinding collections waiting for new stuff. Just got Legion, that’ll keep me busy till halloween
