Well, we are still waiting for the first expension, so I guess gw2 is still fresh.
Even if there is a new mmo I the next 5 years, I will keep playing gw2, specially when they keep creating new content. The fast pace combat system in gw2 is what I liked most in gw2. True art

Imho, if anet could be able to keep upgrading gw2 (Like the mastery system is trying to do), I really believe that gw2 will last as long as no other technology acessible appear.

I Only really would trade gw2 gameplay style for something like virtual reality with neuro-controlabilty or something like that. Things we see in sci-fi movies or animes (I Hate to compare to it, but yeah – I am talking about SAO style of gaming >_> )

… You think… And that’s fine, however saying that GW2 is on the throne is not entirely right. I think L1 still beats out any other of NCsofts products in the Q1-4, Not to mention WoW. Probably others, not that I dislike GW2 I think it is a great game, however is it number one in sales etc? naw. Personally I still think the original GW had more replay value, but that’s a whole other discussion. At some point Anet stated that this is the game they want to keep working on going forward, I think they even had amount of years 10 or 12 or something. So unless tech changes in the game industry revolutionizes overnight, I don’t think we’ll see GW3 anytime soon.
As far as other games go, Black Desert seems like a fair contender as the next nr1 game. We’ll just have to wait and see

Probably a long time. The last few stumbled when they came off the starting blocks and it takes years to design and get a large game like this ready for players. The recent disappointments could cause other new games to have trouble getting funding.

Be careful what you ask for

It probably will last a long time because they have forced the game into an ultra causal game, where id say that in the next year with the current progression people will only log in for dailies and maybe do 1 or 2 events then log off, which is exactly what Anet is pushing for, they wont want people spending hours in there game farming etc as it ruins what their vision of the game is,

Personally id be more interested to see what they do when NCSoft push out Blade ‘n’ Soul to the western market, as I know a lot of people who have waited along time to play that game.

NCsoft/Team Bloodlust: Blade and Soul just opened a office in russia: very close to NA release. Continue: Pearl Abyss: Black Desert and Neowiz Bless Studio: Bless Online, City State Entertainment: Camelot Unchained, NCsoft: Lineage Eternal, Daybreak Game Company: EverQuest Next, GW3.

“GW2 has simply not accomplished what had GW1 accomplished in 2 years+”

“What if you had 5 players from GW1 with all the GW1 skills, attriubtes, health, armor and energy systems go up against 5 Players from GW2 with its respective skill system, no balancing as in armour or HP, just one game vs the other as is. Who would win?
With the sheer amount of DPS and armour youd think the GW2 players would win, they could one shot almost any char in GW1 but… GW1 has 100x times more skills, more creativity and clever ways to adapt to things, like kitten monk”.

Until GW2 accomplish what GW1 accomplish:

Well, let’s look at historyk, shall we?

Star Wars: The Old Republic: A MMORPG made by BioWare, set in their awesome Old Republic-setting. What could possibly go wrong? They found a way…

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: Adventurers, crafters and diplomats (!) all were equally important. You could get a horse at lvl 10, but it didn’t matter if you were lvl 10 adventurer, lvl 10 crafter or lvl 10 diplomat. Add in awesome graphics, awesome races, a great combat system, flying mounts and tons of other stuff, and it should have been huge. It failed miserably.

Elder Scrolls! Online! What can possibly go wrong!!! Everything, apparently!

The Secret World! So secret no one actually played it.

Age of Conan = Best! Combat! Ever! Shame about the rest of the game…

Aion should have been the best thing ever. It… wasn’t.

ArcheAge? So much hype before release, so forgotten two days after release.

I could go on, but you get the idea. We have had countless “next big thing” that barely became the “next mediocre thing”. Everyone wants to make the next big thing, but very few actually succeeds. There are just too many things that can go wrong.

I don’t really think there is any straight forward answer to the OPs question. The best we can do is answer on an individual basis on what might lure us away from GW2 (for those of us that enjoy the game), and that’s going to be very dependent on the game as well as the person.

Some people really like ESO and left GW2 to play that, I find it super boring.

Some people really like WoW and have tried other games, but always go back. I played WoW for a total of 7 months before MoP released. That’s all I could take of it.

Some people really, really like Wildstar. That one looked way too WoW-esk, so I didn’t even bother.

I have a guildie that absolutely loves Aion. I found it way too much of a grind fest.

I have a coworker that really loves EVE. I’m not into space based MMOs, they just don’t appeal to me.

I have a coworker that loves SWToR, but I couldn’t really get into it. I guess I’m not a big enough Star Wars fan I guess. It had some lovely cinamtics, but I found the classes and combat lackluster and it didn’t hold my attention.

shrug Not all games are for all people.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I personally hope GW2 stays within the top few for a long time. I really enjoy playing the game, with only a few gripes. It’s the same with anything we like though, we moan about stuff but we’d miss it if it was gone.

Having said that, I was looking forward to another MMO being released in eu soon and signed up to their newsletter. Mail this morning: Get access to Beta testing and headstart plus other in game stuff only £18.99, £54.99 or £94.99! The game will be f2p when released so yep, count me out and thanks for the insight as to how your game will be run after release. And yes, I know who the publisher is, for those of you who know which game I mean.

With the competition gouging it’s potential players like that I think GW2 stands a good chance of holding its position for a while yet.

Waiting to see how an $80mil kickstarter project does before I have an answer to this. From what I’ve seen, this space simulation game programs down to an absurdly detailed level… for example, if you are free floating in a space ship and someone fires thrusters to change course, you get thrown against a bulkhead and take damage according to how fast you are moving, what armor (or lack thereof) you are wearing, and whether or not it’s a Tuesday morning on a planet with a full moon (pardon hyperbole). If this project is successful in modeling everything in the game to near reality, it could be the next big thing. Not sure I could afford the multiprocessor/multicore/multi-SLI supercomputer to run it though. Then again, I play games to escape reality, not experience it virtually.

Hype around Star Citizen and overfunded dev team that lost focus is a recipe for biggest crowdfunded flop so far. I hope it succeeds or rip crowdfunding and lots of indies. Kinda different target audience tho. Even eve will not be affected that much by it.

The OP brings up Black Desert. I’ve seen videos of it and it does look to have some cool things. The red flag for me, though, is that as I understand it BD will have open world PvP that you can’t avoid.

Some people really like that. I don’t, and I think those who really enjoy GW2 do so in part because it doesn’t have that. So no matter how “big” a thing BD is, it just may not appeal to most of GW2 players and then it can go be big in its own corner while GW2 retains a player base just fine.

They broke the core engine in SC with some of their whiz-bang features and had to rewrite a lot of it. It may never actually make it as a viable game but it certainly qualifies as one of most complex simulations out there. The lessons learned (assuming the developer cares to share) might just contribute to the next big thing. Someone has to push the envelop to learn what’s possible. Unfortunately that takes money without which advancement in game design grinds to a halt.

Desert online looks good. I just don’t see it happening, there are many factors you have to think about in mmorpg’s. There are so many developers doing it wrong.

SWTOR as an example, imagine BioWare saying that it was a RPG game with mmo elements (of sorts) or if they indeed had the mmo feeling in it, instead of this narrow linear path, with small zones and small worlds having 3-4 big worlds sandbox style (afterall, it’s star wars) but keeping the traditional mmorpg elements in it. It would have become a hit, but they didn’t, they choose the story.

I see desert online as something cool for awhile, but a mmorpg that has that “real” effect on it i just can’t see it lasting long, i just don’t.

This… pretty much. Western audiences have never much been into the grinding play style of Asian MMOs… particularly with the rise of the casual player who really doesn’t have the time to play 24/7. This then leads to the introduction of pay-to-win as developers attempt to develop “short cuts” for these same casuals.

Yep, went a took a look. Turns out you have to be a certain level, AND you get heavily penalized when you PK, even when you’re defending yourself (lose karma points and items). It’s seems people who want to PK all day long are really upset by that.

Even so, I think I’ll still steer clear of that one. I had my fill of PK jackholishness in Age of Wulin/Wushu.

Well, given that the “throne” you speak of is finely crafted from a solid lump of your personal opinion; either never, or whenever you decide to change your mind.

Realistically, I think WoW2 would inevitably be a force to be reckoned with.

Especially as, let’s face it, the current WoW (even with all the mistakes they made this xpac) still is.

Elder Scrolls! Online! What can possibly go wrong!!! Everything, apparently!

Let’s add some detail to that. They used the previous graphics engine, virtually unchanged. And they used the same old interface unchanged except for adding mail chat and group functions. For some reason they didn’t realize that this was unsuitable for a modern MMO. Just opening your inventory or mail meant you were a sitting duck, unable to move or defend yourself.

Then they installed what amounted to several dire exploits, including the vampire one. People could get bitten by a vampire and use vampiric skills in the equivalent of WvW. By using the correct set up a single player could suck a whole zerg dry and be impossible to kill while doing it – the zerg just could not do enough damage. I have no idea if they ever fixed this but they didn’t during the first months. The reason I have no idea is I wasn’t going to pay a monthly fee for a game that had such dire issues and let my account shut down.

Then, instead of a mastery system, they have Veteran levels. At some point they altered these, adding more. The problem being this made a lot of high level content so difficult as to be impossible if you hadn’t kept your character fully leveled by doing literally everything up to that point. Even on level people found a great deal of this content extremely challenging to ridiculous.

A good number of people still play it, but not me. The underlying game was good, there were plenty of quests to do. They just didn’t fix stuff fast enough when people were screaming at them about the issues. It is an ideal example of what not to do when creating and maintaining an MMO.

In addition to that they had phasing in the quests. You and a friend could start out doing a quest together but then the phasing separates you. All you saw is a chevron marking his location and you couldn’t help since you couldn’t see what he was seeing. It made grouping up to play through the game difficult.

Do you even read wvw section?
Wvw only forums??
Do you even wvw??
New map just for pure design and perfumary was never what wvw community asked for.
Wvw community has been asking for yhe exact same things for over 3 years already.
But anet does not care avout this game mode enough to listen.
Adding More of the same is not improving wvw.
Just readbthe first 3 pages of the wvw section..you will see lots and lots of subjects popping on over and over and over and over and over..
Ok i think you got the idea..
But ye a new map is cool.. just not gonna fix the old problems..
Gonna have old problems into different textures.
YaY.
Have you bothered to think why even on reset night queues are so small lately?? Prime time reset with barely queue or small ones..
There used to be huge ones..
Aside from reset nights there are queues once or maybe twice a day on 1 bl if you get someyhing huge going on there..if not..no queue at all…
Why is that??
3 years passed .
Basically nothing changed..
Defending still means nothing.
Server still fails to handle 3 side way fights.
Balancing never existed..its done based on spvp and wvw players just gotta deal with it and move on with builds becomming op or just useless out of nowhere…
But wow.. new map gonna save it alll..

Not only that, but you couldn’t set the camera to follow behind you – you had to keep moving it, constantly and considering a lot of the mobs did this teleport behind you thing (so, you had to keep turning), that was ridiculously annoying.

…and if you complained, you got “Oh, have you never played a game like this before?”.

Well, no, I haven’t actually!

WoW isn’t like that, GW2 isn’t, pretty sure SWTOR isn’t (as far as I remember), none of the console games I’ve played were…

Totally bizarre.

Other than that, it was a nice-looking, atmospheric game (if a little too much for my old laptop), but that was a gamebreaker, for me.

Morfedel.
Just like eotm did huh…
After all…wvw community lovessss eotm map

LOL

Quite a lot has changed actually. Remember that orb you used to have to capture for instance? There also used to be underwater areas in the center that are no longer there? borderlands bloodlust?

those are just examples, but feel free to completely ignore them and keep saying nothing has changed.

Oh, and I dont know about your server, but on reset nights my server often has queues, and active wvw the entire time. My server is VERY active. If yours isnt, thats a server problem, not a wvw problem; and we LOVE wvw there.

As usual, YMMV, and apparently yours does very much, but don’t presume to talk for everyone in your clearly very biased and inaccurate rant there.

I don’t know about the next big thing but I do know GW2 has become pretty stale and ANET made the mistake of announcing an XPACK which feels like 2 years ago….it’s taking waaaaaaaaaay too long to release.

Since they announced it so early people stop playing as much WvW and such thinking the XPACK was just around the corner. Now that they’ve talked about it for sooooooooo long it’s kinda lost it’s thrill factor. I have a feeling people will love it or it’ll just feel like another zone and people will be bored of it pretty quick.

Fallout 4 is out soon! Can’t wait

The OP brings up Black Desert. I’ve seen videos of it and it does look to have some cool things. The red flag for me, though, is that as I understand it BD will have open world PvP that you can’t avoid.

Hmm… well, I guess I won’t be getting that game.

Is It to much to hope for that all the pro open world PVPers go there?

Most likely.

As for the OP, I plan on staying here no matter what the next big thing is. I just hope that after this FAR TO EXTENDED wait they go back to a regular schedule of festivals, events and updates.

Edit: Ugh! It has open world, unavoidable PvP? My carebear butt ain’t having none of that. A pity. . . .

Yeah, that’s no good.

If games were balanced and fair and people weren’t such kittens (yes, I typed out “kittens”), it would probably be fine.

However, having initially played WoW on a PVP server and read the posts of truly deranged (I’m not exaggerating) WoW PVPers, on the WoW EU forum, I would never, ever, do that again.

I haven’t heard much about EQ next since like 2013 is it even still being developed. The graphics looked so dated. Same with Camelot, it looks on par with DaoC!! lol

The fact that even with megaservers, you can find people everywhere, anytime for anything. Things you don’t get to see even in the top selling games. GW2 is big enough already. All we need is a constant updates of new content. With or without xpacs, the game has proven that is a solid investment.
