Okay gotta go download the new patch that popped up while I was writing this.

They could shut down the game every week to 8 hours for maintenance if you want.

Plus several times per month for several hours each for hot-fixes of course.

This is officially scraping the bottom of the complaint barrel now. How dare they make regular updates to the game.

I’d much rather they shut it down and get it done right once, rather than the constant patching.

Its just annoying.

You have two hours to complete everything from notification of patch to force relog. Annoyed is your choice.

Well, due to insanely tiny school data cap limits, and what little data I get off my cell, most of the time I have to leave the dorm and go find an off campus hotspot (ie McDonalds) to download anything. So ya it gets annoying.

Wouldn’t mind so much if I was at home.

I’d rather them keep the game up n’ running and do patches, as they are now. Some people have a short window of play time before and after work/school/etc.

It’d be highly annoying for me to try and play the game before work only for it to be “down for maintenance” for the next indeterminate amount of time.

There have been 7 patches to the game in August, which amounts to fewer than one every other day. You might, therefore, want to reconsider your specific hyperbole in attempting to make your argument.

You might also want to explain what exactly you’d like ANet to do instead. Should they not fix bugs? Should they leave major bugs during brief demo period? Should they leave issues that block people’s achievements for a longer period, so they can queue more fixes up into fewer patches?

In software this complex, stuff is going to break. Sometimes for reasons that perhaps (or even probably) ANet should have addressed pre-patch. But mostly, it’s not possible to catch everything before it goes live.

I’m sure we’d all like to patch less often. I’m sure we’d all prefer fewer bugs. But take a look at how little time we suffer a game outage. Almost all the game’s downtime has been DDoS attacks, a data center (managed by others) that went down, a DNS problem, and yeah, a few patches a month.

In short, while waiting for the next patch to download (whenever that happens), take another look at just how bad it is (or how good).

So exactly what do you want, regular fast fixes or no fixes for long periods of time?

You have no idea how issue/bug tracking and fix deployment works… do you? There is no “taking it down once, and fixing it in one go” when you’re dealing with game code. Sure they could roll up a bunch of fixes into a weekly patch, and only deploy a weekly patch…… but that also means any new bugs introduced, especially prominent ones, will have to be tolerated until the next scheduled update.

If the game was crashing every 5 minutes, you’d WANT them push out a hot fix as soon as possible. You know that one event achievement you’ve been trying to get all week, but can’t because that part of the event is bugged… and it took them 3 tries to fix it? Are you seriously ok with waiting 3 weeks for that to pan out? Or would you rather have 3 small patches in one day that lead to the same result?

Or just pretend they took the servers down, go to sleep and login tomorrow. As far as your stream of consciousnesses is concerned, its only one patch in the launcher. Again… net results are the same.

so going by your development model, lets say they do their big release every three months and today is the day, so now we have a huge code drop using your model, which means more bugs. Unfortunately because you want no patching, all those bugs have to stay unfixed, potentially ruining gameplay for the next 3 months. This is why they do regular fixes. Google Waterfall development.
