About how many active players are on GW2?

More than 1 less than 8 millions. ^^

Gaming companies never reveal the number of active players.

Just curious. Not sure if I should get into GW2 or WoW. I did buy GW2. Hopefully the Mac version will run and will be stable, otherwise I’m out of here.

The Mac client is in beta (and it seems to have been somewhat abandoned) but it seems to run somewhat good at least.

You know….Lordkrall’s estimate is probably pretty accurate. But we never see all the players anyway, so as long s there are enough people to complete events, what does it matter how many more are on another server or in another game?

Statistical answer: Somewhere between 450 (I saw three capped maps last night) and 7300000 (amount of copies sold between NA, EU and chinese), with a margin of error of 1%..

More practical answer: Seems to be populated enough, specially after the megaserver went life. It’s been a while since I’ve been on maps, even far away from the more interesting spots, and haven’t seen at least one other person around, and at least when it comes to the big open world boss events, as an anecdote, last night I went to the Tequatl fight (very popular open world level 65 boss) with TTS (a group of guilds created to coordinate the harder open world boss fights), I managed to get into the second map available out of the TTS coordinated ones (usually 2, but sometimes 3 or more) but the game crashed on me (not usual, it’s probably the 5th time it has crashed on me since beta). When I managed to connect again the second map was full, so I stayed on the map I was into, some commanders came around and started to coordinate the fight before the boss showed up, the map got filled (some people were trying to get friends in but map was full), boss showed up and we killed it with 1 minute to spare.

So, basically there were at least 450 active players (each map instance fills at 150 players) that were fighting that particular boss at that time that I could see in only three instances of that map, not counting other instances that were also doing the same, and in one single map (not counting people in the rest of the world)… so I’d say there are plenty around.

I laugh at the over 1 million comment. Just look at the solo/team q rankings. after they first 1000 player it goes to 96%. Which means that the top 4% is 1000 of the player bases who have done que match since the solo q ladder was added. with simple math that means around 25 thousand players have tried solo q. Now i know that not all active player spvp or even soloq, but doubt that 39/40 of the active population has never soloq and also the soloq ranks probably have inactive players as well. But it is the only way to seculate what the true active population is.
So by just doing simple math of 1000/.04 = 25000 active players at the moment in NA. Now i would estimate that is probably only % of the population. But if anyone else can figure out a better way determine active players I’d love to hear it, not a feel test like many want to post.
Edit: The mega server has really masked how dead the game really is. I just wish they did a server merger right before wvw season 2. Kill the bronze league and merged them with silver.

I’d like to add to that that there probably were quite a few people fighting that same Dragon on the other region as well. And that a lot of people do not go to Tequatl fights at all and few more than once a day.

If you’re wondering whether there are enough active players in-game to make it fun then the simple solution is to log in and find out. The game has no subscription, if you’ve already bought it you have nothing to lose but the time it takes you to find out.

I play on the EU servers so I have no idea what the situation on NA is like, but I have a hard time finding a map without at least a few people in it.
