Q:
How many online / server population?
A:
Yes, you will see many players everywhere
As far as content, it varies by release. You can see here:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/
The Megaserver technology adds as many maps as is necessary to accommodate as many players wanting to play on those maps so there never is a queue for PvE content. So for instance, during a world boss event, if 50k players go to Queensdale at 9:45 to defeat the Shadow Behemoth, the megaserver would spawn upwards of 250 maps. Then as players moved on to other areas, the Queensdale maps would start closing/combining to accommodate as many players as were staying on that map so that the maps always feel full.
You are sorted into maps based on your party, guild, friends list and home world.
Servers are never full to the point that someone can’t log on; this game operates differently from WoW when it comes to servers. The only time you’d experience a queue to play is for wvw, usually on reset nights. YB has a high wvw population. I’m not sure what their pve population is like, but every pve map (and the pvp lobby) is now a megaserver, compiled of players from multiple servers. So, you should be able to find people in whichever map you go to.
You can see a list of servers when you log in by clicking on World Selection. All servers are currently listed as “Very High” population.
Home server is only relevant if you talk about WvW. Otherwise the whole region plays together on Megaservers. There are people in all areas because of this. Right now, of course, the new areas Dry top and especially Silverwastes have plenty of people as does Divinity’s Reach for the next week until Wintersday stuff goes away.
Very occasionally after a patch the login server has collapsed under the volume of people trying to get in to see the new content immediately. It is rare and clears pretty fast. Otherwise there is no ‘waiting time’. If you want to play WvW then you can face queues, especially at the weekly reset Friday evening.
I don’t do PvP / WvW… just regular PvE.
Should I be able to see many other players in the starting areas???
As far as content, can someone inform me as far as what is typically added? I see that there are no expansion packs for sale – so what exactly is added for new content? Are new events, places on the map / zones, and various other things added?
Could someone please explain to me what is typically added during an update, as well as letting me know how often these updates usually take place?
Also, a “Very High” population… is it typically like that all day long? Does it often get higher? Lower?

Point 2 see above.
Well megaservers means you’ll see people pretty much all the time.

The Family Deuce. Asuran Adventure Specialists.
the megaserver kind of jumbled all the people together.
So you should see people on the open world.
Sort of confused. The game is free to play. Why not log in and just take a look around and form your own conclusion?
As for new content, the homepage is neatly organized chronicling each of the new living stories in detail.
Sometimes I wonder how people managed to crawl out of AOL since 1998.
