Q:

I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 since its release. I can’t help but wonder how many people are playing Guild Wars 2. I’m curious about the player population. So how many do you guys think play Guild Wars 2 world wide: thousands, hundreds of thousands, or millions?

After seeing people every day in the early stages of GW2, I assumed it would always be like that, but I actually can go exploring for 6 hours and not see a single person. I know for a fact that many, many people left GW2 because of the RNG issues and the “not enough permanent content” issues. I’m about to play other games because the Mystic Forge is making me angry beyond belief. I dropped over 500 rares and over 50 exotics into the mystic forge JUST yesterday and I got nothing worth my time. I can only assume from other people’s posts that they have experienced similar disasters and have decided to move on. So in short, the number is low and is decreasing. As a consistent player of GW2, I can only guess by the number of people I see in game. With the consistent RNG, I’m guessing that drove off 60% of GW2’s playerbase including myself. Again, I’m only guessing and could be completely wrong, but from what I am seeing GW2 is slowly going downhill.

I assumed he would want a better answer than “Only Anet can answer this”. So a guess is still better than your answer. I’m giving him my personal experience and nothing more. He is intelligent enough to decide what to believe and what not to believe. Yes, only Anet can answer this, but ask for more people’s experience with the game and you’ll get a slew of different answers.

You could ask the guildleaders about dissapearing/passive members.. I am sure they can confirm that lots of people are leaving/going passive.

My guild had tons and tons of players, but the leader had to go berserk and kick tens of people on a weekly basis because they stopped playing!! (And i was in a top www-guild with really cool and social guys (as long as you played www).

So by the look of it, players are leaving fast.

Speaking for myself, i am actually just in here after some three months off from this game to see if the ranger still sucks, and i can rest assured it does.

Anet doesnt know up from down with this game! Pve, dungeons, www and sPvp are just too much to balance with the 5-skill-bar.. haha^^ Imagine that!! They guys that made GW with cross proffesions and hundreds of skills to use on each character cant balance the five freaking bowskills.. Wow.. Its sad really.

Have a good one!

It hovers around 6-8 in the Top 10 on xfire. Below World of Warcraft, but ahead of SWTOR.

It’s on a par with Minecraft, World of Tanks, and DOTA2, in terms of hours played. Which is a good place to be.

The thing is, your perception is going to vary depending on the server and time you play at.

I see threads reporting the world is empty and then I see threads complaining about PvE culling and getting thrown into over flow maps.

Because Tyria is quite a nice size and there are multiple map for each level range, depending the time you play you will encounter seemingly empty zones, some zones are quite large so it is also quite likely that you could be sharing a zone with multiple people and just missing them.

Personally I play on Tarnished Coast which seems to be a high population server and even leveling up I rarely go very long at all with out seeing other people.

As for using that information to guess at the total population of GW2; Active, inactive, daily, casual.. I would have a better chance counting the cars I see on the road on my way to work and attempting to approximate the total number of vehicles owned in the country.

It’s a sensitive topic on the forums.

There have been a lot of game mechanics introduced that actively concentrate people in small areas, like the meta chests, the living story, the CoF runs, and guesting. Some servers experience a perceived lack of population at different times, and some servers are just plain less populated than others. You will get different answers depending on who you ask, especially on the forums. Some will always answer that the population is huge and growing, and others will always answer that no one is around and the game is dying. Neither side has hard evidence to support their statements.

You have to answer this question for yourself though really. Is the game populated enough in the areas you care about to make a difference?

The truth is no one except Anet knows for sure what the metrics are. All we can do on the forums is guess…and argue about it.

As far as what I think? Probably in the range of a million maybe more people log in at least once a month.

Okay there are X numbers of servers, and no matter what you can only guest to half of them. There are people in WvW, in different maps, people in fractals, people in dugeons, including the new dungeon, which would likely be more popular than old dungeons. There are people in personal story instances.

There are 25 big zones. There’s culling. Anything anyone guesses is a guess and nothing more. There are guilds running around that have hundreds of members in them. My guild has a hundred. Many people have left the game, because it’s not for them.

I guarantee you more people have left World of Warcraft in the last quarter than Guild Wars 2, and no one is saying WoW is dead.

This kind of question is not constructive. You’ll get group 1 saying it’s dead, many of whom don’t like the game and have their agenda. You’ll get group 2 saying it’s not dead, many of whom love the game and have an agenda.

And you still won’t know, so it’s down to who you choose to believe, which doesn’t make either side right.

Therefore, my answer to the question is the only answer that actually makes sense. Anet has the numbers and if they don’t release the numbers, anyone’s guess is as good as anyone else’s.

Which is to say, pretty much worthless.

I can only judge on my server, Seafarer’s Rest (EU) and via WvW when your playing other servers…

I see hordes of people all the time…

So my guess would be lots people play GW2, only Anet could put a exact number on it thou…

However, parts of GW2 are very dead, like 16 to 70 level zones, its not culling either, often they could be just half a dozen players in that zone if your lucky…

Also, all the dungeons other than CoF1, Arah plus 1 or 2 others are heading towards ‘dead’ status…

If you think about it, it makes sense, the games been out nearly a year, the vast majority are lvl 80 and have all there exotic gear. All the people who have levelled alts have got anything from 4-8 lvl 80’s and likewise got all there exotic gear…so no need to play those areas of the game anymore…

There are not so many people as it was in release days. And mister Vayne (do not confuse with Bruce Wayne) can’t deny this.

On first 2 month GW2 had much more people than it has right now. As has been toled before by one person, GW2 is an unfocused game. I toled this to my Russian speaking friends too. That’s why GW2 are loosing it’s players. There is simply not much to offer.

Seriously, what can offer GW2? Decent PVE? I don’t think so. PVE is superficial and not much rewording. PvP is superficial, WvW is superficial, LORE is superficial, exploring the world is superficial too. Team synergy is superficial and so on and etcetera.

GW2 is nice, but there is not much it can offer. Because, as I’ve told it before, ArenaNet set themselves too much tusks, and are simply failing. Almost every aspect in the game is superficial. There is not much to offer unless you are an extremely casual player, playing the game once in a month, for example.

For now, there is only 2 things which are not superficial. It’s temporary rng boxes and grinding/farming.

That’s why GW2 are losing people. Of course it has new arrivals, but the truce is that GW2 is a short term game. No aspect in this game are holding you for long.

GW1 didn’t have such problems as I remember.

Sooner or later GW2 will die unless they will improve the game.

I don’t like the idea of Living story, which will release every 2 weeks. Instead of that, I would improve aspects which we already have. But we all know that ArenaNet will continue feeding us temporary “content” which I call “event” cause it’s temporary.

I don’t think GW2 will change, though, I still have hopes. But time is ticking, and other games will come.

Seize the day.

Xfire is hardly used by anyone anymore. Twitch is the better one to use for any comparisons, even Anet uses twitch.
There are still people playing, but it sure seems like people are leaving at a high rate. A handful of my rl friends and family hasn’t picked up the game in 6 months and I’ve witnessed a couple large guilds up and quit after kittening about the game not being fun to them, mostly endgame related. The game will likely continue to drop players until it the only active players fit into the games niche. That might be 50k or even as high as 750k. The great thing is that it is B2P, so people will always be coming back after extended breaks to check things out.

Twitch averages-ish:
Daytime america

LoL 50k+ viewers
SC2 15k+
Dota2 15k+
Wow 15k+
Minecraft 10k+
Runescape 2k+
These aren’t peak numbers either. These could easily double or triple.

Gw2 on average has 200-400 viewers, which is on the same level as swtor and tera.
I know that twitch isn’t a good indicator of active population, but the difference of wow with 8 mil active players having as much as 60 times more viewers on average could say that the active population in gw2 is around 200k.
Eve sits at about 500k active subs and usually has 2-3x more viewers than gw2, so it is kind of in the ballpark.
I know none of this is accurate, as there is tins of other deciding factors, but do think its the best guesstimate I could give.
sorry if its sloppy, wrote all of this on phone.

I would go as far to say that 99 percent of all MMOs don’t have as many people as they have on release day, so this is meaningless comment.

More, even if there were as many, you’d never be able to tell, because on release day, everyone is crowded into five zones starting in the same area. There’s no one in a dungeon. There was no one in fractals. People were out in the same zones in the world.

But yes, I’d be massively surprised if we had the same numbers that we had on launch day. So?

Edit: I think the Guild Wars 2 population was lower in November than it is now.

Well, I don’t play any more. Limited character/skill build options, over-simplistic and restrictive gameplay, tier gear grinding, RNG, cash shop funneling, temporary content, lack of GvG, bugs, crashes, poor writing/editing, vapid storyline, and general mediocrity have finally, after 7 years of being a Guild Wars and ArenaNet fan, turned me off.

Those 7 years are why I still kind of follow the game, to see if they’re going to actually get around to “when it’s ready”. But I don’t play anymore. And so far, I still see people complaining about the same things I left the game for. So I guess it’s not fixed. I wonder if it ever will be.

It sucks to go from a huge fan to a very disappointed one. Perhaps I should just forget GW2 forever and move on.

But anyway, to answer your question, OP, as best I can:

Here is exactly one bona-fide, certified player who doesn’t log on any more.

I don’t know what game you are playing, the only things I would agree on is the RNG and lack fo GvG but i don’t see that as an issue. If you feel that badly I agree that it is time you need to move on.

I remember it said “More than 2 million players” or something on the front page.
But, when you were selecting servers, there was a number indicating how many people are actually playing the game at this given moment, it was harldy ever bigger than 15 000. So yeah, I have no evidence for GW2, I already said that.
I’m playing on a supposedly high population.

A guestimate is going to be misleading. This question is asked probably once a week or mentioned once a week in another thread. It leads to division. It never gets answered or accomplishes anything. It has nothing to do with critical. It has to do with experience.

However everyone will have a different experiences depending on the server and the region that they’re in. People are saying that players are leaving. Maybe they’re leaving in servers that I’m not in.

Yeah. Guessing is pointless, I agree.
But, you must be really blind not to see that people are quitting this game and that this game is NOT as active as it used to be.

Used to be in January, Used to be in November, used to be at launch?

There are total of 8. 8 players and that’s all. My guess is as good as anyone else’s but as someone else already pointed out – ANet has the real answer.

There are over 3 million box sales, that’s not a rumor that’s confirmed. I would imagine the number is closer to 4 million now than three million, but that’s speculation.

Obviously there are a lot of people dissatisfied with the game as it stands. I believe it was made to appeal more to RPGers than MMOers in general and some of the design decisions seem to support that.

By the same token it’s very different from a single player RPG experience.

People have obviously left, just as people have obviously left WoW. People leaving an MMO is not news. The question is, how fast are new people coming in, as compared to people leaving.

I don’t know that a million people are still playing this game. I have no way TO know.

But then, since it’s a B2P game without a monthly fee, people stay away for longer than they do other games. We have people that take breaks for months (so they’re not playing now and then they come back and play for a while and leave again. Are they active players?).

It’s just not such an easy question to answer, even if you’re looking around.

It occurs to me that I’ve seen several emails from other studios encouraging me to return to their games, and talking about new features, and often providing some incentive.

I usually ignore them, but I’d be willing to read one from ArenaNet – especially if it wasn’t just the usual empty hype but a sincere discussion of where they game is actually going…

This is just my opinion and experience in the game since launch:
At launch it was blanket people as far as you can see because everyone where in the same maps.

I think the game took a huge population knock in Nov.
The addition of Ascended lost a lot of people and FotM sucked many people from the world into an instance and for awhile there it was pretty lonely.

The population was more spread out then than at launch and that added to the problem

Wintersday saw a huge influx of people, both from new players and returning players.

Then in Jan with the addition of chests to world events players were clumping up in those maps which led to even emptier zones, dailies/laurels helped somewhat to funnel people to regions of the map and out of FoTM

Guesting also impacts perceived population because people tend to guest to busier servers which makes emptier or non active PvE servers seem like a ghost town from what I read here.

Living Story serves to populate the relevant maps pretty well.

If I had to wager a guess- based on maps that are not part of LS, world bosses etc: I would say more than in Nov.
I am on a pretty active PvE server and see people pretty much allover.

The nature of the game is such that you will see pop spikes at different times e.g weekends, prime time, holidays and after a majour patch.
There you have my speculation

I know for a fact that many, many people left GW2 because of the RNG issues and the “not enough permanent content” issues. I’m about to play other games because the Mystic Forge is making me angry beyond belief.

Ironically that’s not why people should leave. if anything it should be great ideas and bug/gameplay reports are simply ignored. I got headaches more than once from the blinding vista flashes, reported it multiple times and it’s the same.

So bug reports are ignored? No bugs are fixed at all?

Maybe there are a lot of bugs and some new bugs as well and Anet is fixing bugs according to an order that makes sense to them…for example…bugs that halt progress first (which is why you have an option to check that off when you report a bug).

Stop guessing. Unless you guest to every single server in both the EU an the US you have no idea. No one does. Only Anet can answer this.

This is true, but I think he’s still right about RNG being a huge flaw in the PvE experience. We should be able to get cool stuff directly from the content, not from gambling the trash loot of the content. Like, I know that there is a tiny chance of getting any exotic (including precursors) from any champion/world boss, but the chance is extremely remote and the fact that none of the items are linked to a specific event/boss makes them less “unique” and feels like there is no reason to do one thing vs the other.

I got Eir’s longbow from a random minotaur in Frostgorge Sound (thanks only to +175% magic find btw). How does that make sense? Eir’s longbow should drop from a specific dynamic event boss that involves you helping Eir somehow.

For example in GW1 you had to do Urgoz or Deep to get a zodiac weapon. Shadow blades only drop from shadow enemies in the realm of torment or FoW. Many bosses in the game dropped their own unique green weapon.

I think the main fear in that design is that people might overwhelmingly farm a few things and ignore other content, but it seemed to work before. At the very least it would force Anet as designers to make sure the aesthetic quality of every drop be up to snuff, which is a good thing for us. Right now I think the game feels unrewarding because you don’t get cool stuff from clearing content (other than tokens), you get cool stuff from gambling after clearing content.

Threads going to derail with an rng discussion, Oh well.

You get the increased rng with the B2P and F2P (and a bit with hybrids) models. Just the way it is.

Don’t like the system? Don’t support the payment models.

I’m not arguing for RNG. I’m generally against RNG, particularly RNG from chests that you pay cash for. And though I have a legendary, I think the precusor system isn’t very good at all.

But that doesn’t change the fact that we have this conversation pretty much once a week every week, and it always ends up exactly the same.
