THIS IS ENTIRELY HYPOTHETICAL. I’m not planning to do this I am just intrigued!

So my 50 gems in my account currently sell for 1 gold 30 silver in-game.

Eternity is currently selling on the TP for 1700 G. So I worked out that if I bought 50,000 Gems it would give me 1300 Gold in-game. 200 Gems is roughly equal to £2. So Eternity is worth £250? Because you divide 50k by 200? Is that right? Holy moly. I love how a game which cost you £40 can, in theory, make you £210. That is just the coolest tid bit. Of course that’s if I’m right and my maths is not completely terrible.

EDIT: It’s not 1300 gold, it’s 1000 Gold + whatever 30 silver * 1000 is in gold.

But then again it’s not so cool because getting that legendary probably cost you a lot more time than just going to get a minimum wage job and putting in the same amount of hours. In fact, if you put the same amount of time in a minimum wage job you’d have a tonne more. But that’s a whole another equation depending on the average time it took to make a legendary weapon. …But then again, you’re having fun making that legendary? RIGHT?

…And unless you live in a box with only your pc and internet I’m sure your living costs for making that legendary far out weigh whatever profit you could hypothetically make from it.

Yeah but I really don’t think anyone would actually buy a legendary through gems then currency exchange. That defeats the purpose of them. They’re meant to be a time sink so you get that massive feeling of accomplishment when you’ve done it. Otherwise it’s just like cheating. And games are really not enjoyed in the right way when cheating is involved.

It’s true that you can determine the cost of a legendary in real world money, but it is a poor measure of its value. Because you can trade real world money->gems->gold, you can tell how much it will cost you. But since you can’t bring that gold back to real world money, value becomes distorted.

It’s like if I wanted a new car that is worth $10k. I can go to the dealership and buy it. The cost is 10k and the value is 10k(let’s pretend there is no depreciation) because I can resell it right away for at least the cost. Buying a legendary with gold earned ingame is like this.

However, I could also hire some car builders to construct that same $10k car and it may cost me $12k because they have to build everything from scratch and do not work for the car company. Buying a legendary with real world money is like this.

correction:
It’s not 1300 gold, it’s 1000 Gold + whatever 30 silver * 100 is in gold.
1g = 100s
so 30s = 0.3g

also, this 1300 should be 1700 at least, raising the price from £250 to £326
also, you forgot to multiply by the £2. £653 to buy eternity = 65,384 gems = 1,700g based on your numbers.

Mystic’s calculations ring truer to me. There’s a handy little tool on http://www.gw2spidy.com/ that gives you the USD-to-gold exchange rate, which would peg Eternity at just under US$1000. Considering the GBP-USD exchange rate I’d expect that to be on the higher side of 500 pounds.

And yeah, I also came to the realization that you’d quicker be able to earn the weapon with a real part-time job than through playing GW2. It’s not something I’d actually do, but it certainly does put the idea of getting a legendary in perspective. If you’re not having fun while working towards one, you need to ask yourself if it’s really worth it.

This has come up before. A quick search around the web shows them for sale at various places. Will not give any links, as I don’t agree with purchasing a legendary, even if it is the most viable option of getting one currently.

I was doing some quick math in my head and it seemed that 1,700g for Eternity was extremely low (because it’s the combo of 2 legendaries). So I just looked at the TP and while it does show initially as 1,700g , if you click on it the actual selling price goes way up to 2,950g (and 3,199.99.99g for the 2nd one, there are only 2 available).

So the ‘real $$ cost’ is dramatically higher than discussed above.

Also, what’s the deal with the disparity in those TP prices?

Buy orders vs. Sell orders prices, the 1700g you see is the current maximum buy order for the object.

Thanks for the clarification!

So really Eternity is not selling for 1,700g but 2,950g, and so the real $ figures discussed above should be updated to take this into account.

Kinda yes, however neither value actually represents a fixed price so the “real” price is probably somewhere in between. I also suspect that most legendaries actually sells using a buy order so the price could probably be considered being between 1700 and 2300

really, it’s not selling for either 1700 or 2950. what it really sold for is above 1700 and below 2950, because the listings that sold are not there anymore. let’s see the last time the price changed…
looks like the last one to sell was a sell listing at 2499.9999g (this is pretty guaranteed to have been a sale)
before that, a buy listing at 1935.9999g was removed (either by actually buying one or being removing)
both of these were within the last 5 days.
2 weeks before that, a sell listing for less than 2871.7172g sold (relisted for 3199.999g? it happened too quick for spidy to say the exact price)
a week before that, a sell listing for 2999.9999g sold

So these are actually selling for 2000-3000g, the price I’d expect to pay to get one is closer to 3000 = £1152
a quick google search shows you can buy eternity for $800 = £1250 from a ‘player’ :P good to see that buying through Anet’s gems is cheaper.
if you wait for 10 seconds after a patch, the gem price might spike enough to decrease it to £1000
