How much have you paid to play Guild Wars 2?
I have about 30$ worth of gems that I got by converting gold into gems a long time ago right when the game came out. Haven’t spent a penny beyond paying for the game.
I’ve done quite a few gold-to-gem conversions, but beyond that the only thing I’ve paid beyond the box cost is $10 for the Aetherblade armor. I’m likely to get another set or two in the future, but I’m holding out until I level the alts that will use them, and hoping they add some kind of appearance NPC like they had in GW1 that would let me “respawn” the skins I buy.
I’m also looking into some character slots, bank expansions, and upgrading my account to deluxe. All I plan to spend real money on because I want to support the development of future content. I just happen to be on a fixed income and saving my spare cakitten the moment, so I won’t likely be dropping anything more into the game until after September.
Probably about $40-$50 on gems for up slots, characters and harvesting tools, not on RNG items though
Ballpark, close to $300 after box price, maybe a bit more. I spend my money on things I like and enjoy so I don’t regret it. I have many alts and I often get things I like for them, armor skins, bank slots, bag slots, character slots, and often transmutation stones after I burn through the ones I got in game. I have traded gems for gold a few times for craft leveling. Then throw in the fact that I can never decide on a name until about the 3rd or 4th change and it adds up. I don’t mind buying BLKs every now and then because even though the reward often doesn’t equal the cost I use most of the boosts, dyes, level up books, make over kits and so forth. I did just get a ticket and some scraps today for buying 10 keys with some gems left after some other purchases. Now I have to decide what weapon skin to get. Being an alt addict that makes for a tough choice.
So yes, I’d say I’m content with the money I have spent so far. I’m not too happy with the harvesting tools being soulbound but I knew that going into it. Now I have a mule with the pickaxe parked at my home instance, LOL. Hopefully they will sell that one again soon because I do like it, just not on the alt that it is bound to.
Edit: As per your thread title about how much I paid to play GW2, technically I only paid the box price to play. The other things I chose to pay for just for the extra stuff.

Probably around $150 to $200, excluding the initial purchase of the game.
around $400. Thats it. XD
I’d rather not talk about it…
I payed 50 bucks for the box. I might have payed more in gems, but apparently A-Net does not want my money.
$45 worth of gem cards so far.

dear odin, please let EQNext be awesome.
Up to 44 alt slots now.. do the math. There are expenditures beyond that via gemstore, including buying copies for family and friends.
Was it worth it? For the amount of fun I’ve had since BWE1 up through say…. January.. the answer is yes. I and my guild have really enjoyed the first 3-4 months of the game, the Halloween event and the Wintersday Event as well.
At the moment, we are quite concerned about the future direction of the game, as well as other issues.
I know I have spent more money than I could have. More than I should have. And often left feeling like I am not getting a good “return” on it for my entertainment. That is totally my responsibility and my perception regarding ephemeral items and their “fleeting” value. I can choose to call that extra money spent an “investment” in the game, “support” for ANet or just write it off as a loss (discretionary budget bucket).
My guild feels this is the game that best suits our playstyle (5-man content) and the closest PvP experience we will have to DAoC’s RvR. And we will stick with it until another game comes along that can deliver either of those two requirements better, or we lose all trust in the developers.
Bottom line: spent too much. Most of it was worth it.

You got a free copy of Guild Wars 2?!?!? Lucky!!! :o
Ha ha. Thousands.
Buying the box was just the start. I soon found I needed a new mouse, then a new headset so I could talk to my guildies on Ventrilo and hmm, a new computer – well why not? No lag at Maw any more. I have spent a few hundred on gem purchases as well. Recently I have just bought GW1 and the expansions and additions for that so yeah, a bit of an investment for me but absolutely no regrets.
3 character slots
2 bag slots on my main character
1 bank space expansion
I guess that’s roughly $60 bucks.
Just the $60 I paid to buy Guild Wars 2 itself. I may at some point buy some character slots and bank slots, but I’ll need a better paying job in real life first. I doubt I’ll earn enough gold to transfer it to enough gems to buy them before I get a better paying job.

actually I did! half of my guild wasnt sure if we wanted to play GW2 so the guild leader bought 4 of us copies lol. ironically im the only one that still plays… rarely, but i still get online once or twice a month.
0.
But that’s really because A-Net refuses to release gem cards here. Honestly, if they did, I’d probably spend $20/week give or take. So it’s more A-Net’s fault in that sense :v
I only payed $200 to play Guild Wars 2 (Boxed collector’s, I think it was $200?) but on gems and whatnot, a fair bit, I usually limit myself to $10 / $20 a month so another hundred or so.
I used to play City of Heroes since beta and that was 15/month till they went FTP.
So i dont mind dumping some cash into this game especially if it helps the devs out, ive probably spent around 200 bucks already
how much have you guys spent on this game?

I paid something like $60 or so for the preordered digital version to play this game.
After I have had a steady paycheck for four months I have spent $60 on the game further, largely for the everlasting gathering tools. Anything else beforehand I purchased through Gold to Gems conversion.
Nothing, I pulled a quick jack move from Walmart.
Really though I bought two copies and 2 gem cards. So $170.

The money I spent on the buying the game, no more.
Is currently emotionally unstable because Breaking Bad is over

GW2 is alright. The big reveal for EQNext is tomorrow, buddy. 11:00 am is the stream. Yeeeeahhhh!!
$68. $60 for the game and $8 in taxes. Im not giving them additional money for worthless content such as a flute and fluffy clothing. If they want more of my money they better release an expansion with true content in it or it’ll stay at $68 until i quit the game.

not gonna happen bud… a month after release players were complaining for “real content”. its a year now… not gonna happen. be happy with this fluffy easy content or move on. Lots of great MMO choices coming soon, EQNext, FF XIV, and then Wildstar and Elder Scrolls Online. Right now i play Skyrim mostly, and then GW2 about once a month. GW2 just never felt like a game worth a long term investment. But I’ve never spent a dime on the gem shop so I think i got my money’s worth.
Your title and your OP ask two different questions. How much have I payed to play the game? $60 +tax.
How much more have I spent on gems? Probably another $60, maybe $80. Which, by the way is over the course of basically a year. Of course, I can still afford rent, groceries and booze, so it’s not like I weep over it.
No sympathy for the Devil, keep that in mind.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.
I’ve only spent the 60$ on the base game and that’s really all I feel I owe the developers. It’s not like there’s really anything in the gem store that’s enticing enough for me to spend money on and the few things I do get I get with in game gold by converting to gems. Sure some may argue that I’m not “supporting” the game enough or whatever but it’s really no one elses business what I spend my money on and I currently feel that my initial purchase is more than enough. I’d love to purchase really meaty and meaningful content but that’s another can of worms :P
The initial purchase is all. I don’t buy character or single use items; and they’ve added very few account wide unlocks that I’ve needed/wanted. So I’ve spent nothing after the purchase.
Almost purchased a new character slot once, but opt’d to delete my 80 Norn Engineer instead.
Just the cost of the game. Gold —→ Gems has meant I’ve never needed to spend actual $.

However I’ve only spent $10 ever since January I believe.

$59.99, that’s what the game cost when I pre-ordered it last April.
Well, I paid for the game.
I’ve bought about $60 or so in gems since release (I pre-ordered it, so it’s been pretty spaced out.
But I also bought a whole new desktop, primarily to play the game better.
I also bought a new mouse for the same reason.
Oh, and I bought a new headset to replace my old broken one to talk to people while I play.
So in a way, I’ve paid at least $800 or so to play the game, ha ha.
Me at lease $2000. Why? because I love this game… I dont play any other mmo at all but this one. Got 6 more charater slots, twilight, max 5 characters with all exotic. Hundreds of dollars on gems to gold. Why u ask again because YOLO. LOL.
Im thinking about getting an i7 and the new 780 graphics card too.

instead of ‘thinking’ you should’ve gotten that and ‘think’ about spending money on gems instead.
so far, just the box price.
i plan to buy gems though, with real cash, to support game

I don’t patronize cash shops. If ArenaNet wants to sell me something, they should create an expansion pack.

100% this. Their casual patches will never bring expansion worth of content, even in two years from now (at this rate not even in 5 lol)

Oh I didn’t factor that in . I also built a rig $1000 and a mouse $120 and head set $89 and 27" monitor $240 , Chair $10 and I broke my mouse pad the other day ( how does one break a mouse pad?) all because my laptop lagged and made playing painfull
I have paid exactly $0. Literally. I got the game for free as a gift from a friend and I exchange gold to gems when I want something from the store.

Its ok as long as you’re having fun
I’m going to be nitpicky about the title. The question should really read, “How much have you spent on the game?” Straight and to the point. It was much clearer when the OP wrote it in his post. Asking how much I paid to play the game suggests that playing the game at some point required something above the box price. How much I spent is a perfectly valid question and the other just muddles the message. Oh, and the answer is easily over $100 so far. I try to limit myself to purchasing things with as close to a fixed value as possible. Sometimes I fail at that.
$150 for the Collector’s Edition. (I’m Australian, so we pay about 50% more for our games. Consider yourselves lucky, rest of the world. :P)
About $100 extra for gems to unlock all bag slots and all bank slots.
About $50 around December when the sales were on to buy some Transmutation Crystals. (Gems left over.)
$150 to buy 5 Molten Picks, 5 Consortium Sickles and 5 Chop-it-all Axes.
I have no qualms about spending money to get stuff I want, but as you might have guessed from the above, I refuse to spend any money on RNG items.
I haven’t kept track, but I would guess it’s somewhere around 150-200 euros.
Enough to buy a decent computer , but lately I haven’t been spending on this game due to my waning interest to play the game .
We have 3 accounts- one for each of us.
Personally I have spent about $60- $70 on gems.
I have also converted gold to gems- no idea how much though.
I do have a new computer but I was due for and upgrade, I did however buy a g600 for GW2 so that was what $60?
I don’t regret a cent of it and will gladly spend more
I have never spent money on RNG and never will
(edited by Morrigan.2809)
150€ (~195$) for Collector’s Edition, nothing else.
So far I don’t feel the least inclined to spend any money on gems. The style items only have a single use, the boosts and upgrades (such as bank tabs, char slots) are way too expensive, and everything else in the store is based on RNG (with unknown odds for each item). That said, most gemstore-skins are ugly. @Anet: Port some from GW1.
Buying gems just to support Anet is also off the list (unlike GW1). I won’t support RNG.
CE Price + ~70€ for gems since release.
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
30 euros after box prices. I’m all for supporting the game, but when you to gotta spend 10 euros per set of armor or a single, soulbound endless gathering tool it becomes too pricey for me.
