How observant are you of looks?
Only when standing at the bank in Divinity’s Reach. Other than that, really never. Even though it is called Fashion Wars 2 by many i remember a quote from someone in another post somewhere that said, “the only person that cares about what you look like is you” nobody else really notices.
But hey, if they do notice you, maybe you are doing something right.
i love thematic skins, if u are warrior i wanna see massive plated armor, thief looks nice in leather armor that lets him execute quick and precise stunts…the list is soo long
also i like when i see guardians with shield and sword (i still have the concept of tanking in mind, even tho in gw2 this is not the case)
and ofc, color harmony, when some random rainbow sits near me im like what tha kitten
I stopped looking at other’s creativity when wings on everyone became a thing.
| 61 Asura | 5 Charr | 2 Norn | 1 Human | 1 Sylvari |
i love thematic skins
Agreed 100%. the best looks are the ones that scream the profession at you. I don’t see many looks I like but when I do I always let the person know.
I main guard and use a mix of Aether, primevil and protectors for an Archangel look and I’ve had many comments from people on it. I do have the hawk wings as well and they look awesome but I only use them on my open world armor because the are so obnoxious.
I am deeply in love with the primevil helmet but it’s bloody tricky to get it looking good!
I don’t really pay all that much attention to how people look unless it’s something that stands out such as the charr trying to be Ronald McDonald.
I stopped looking at other’s creativity when wings on everyone became a thing.
Sylvari should preferably wear leaves
That’s racist. You probably think we’re all some kind of tree-loving hippies, don’t you? Living in our tree-houses, communing with nature, eating mushrooms and having orgies on the grass?
Well.. yeah, we do all that but we’re also into other stuff like… adventuring and stuff. And it gets cold in some climates. Leaves just don’t cut it everywhere you go. Sometimes we have to wear regular clothes like the rest of you. In fact, we’re just like the rest of you. If you prick us do we not bleed ….sap?
I resent your discrimination against my people. We shall not be treated like second-class citizens! We shall rise up and… oh, wait. We already did that.
Never mind.
I have a whole series of sub-folders for screenshots (I take a lot) and one of them is ‘other people’s characters’). I don’t go out of my way to look for characters I like, but if I happen to spot an interesting one I’ll take a screenshot.
Sometimes it’s because they have an interesting name, or are doing something amusing but there’s quite a few where I just liked how they look. There’s a wide variety of looks in there, ranging from crazy neon colours to black and white or browns, but I think the main thing is it needs to all fit together and stand out from everyone else in some way. I also prefer it when people mix and match armour, not that sets don’t look good together but it’s not as interesting to me because they were made to work together.
By contrast what interests me least is T3 cultural, CoF or full ascended dyed black, black and extra black and any outfits that looks like they were trying to cram as many ‘exclusive’ or ‘impressive’ pieces together as possible with no regard for what it looks like.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Generally I have a zero amount of look observance. If I’m standing still though, and so are others, then I have better chance to notice things. Colours and skin combinations usually but also anything that I haven’t seen before. When I see that I’ll always compliment the player in a whisper.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
I spend a lot of time on my own character’s looks, but don’t really pay much attention to other people’s looks beyond NPCs.
I have idk 5 differnt looks at least i like to wear at anygiven time on my war alone. I got 3 tunes i play the most each with there own look (sylvari with plant ofcourse is one of them). Most of it is the same stat and rune set. You can come up with some great things my most recent is the flash on my ele really fun running with superspeed.
I look at norn and human women mostly, just to see what looks hot and what doesn’t. Otherwise, most character’s appearances might as well be a max compression jpeg of their character. Random colors and fins and spikes everywhere.
Do not make time to look at other player. Do not care.
I don’t look at others as often as I do, but I love getting complements on my characters!
I usually notice the ones who really stand out in LA or in Fractal/PvP groups, and sometimes compliment ‘em on it (sometimes people have done the same to me, which is always cool). I’m constantly tinkering with my characters’ looks and sometimes get inspired by other player ideas.
I’m most impressed by characters that seem to have a cohesive theme, where the character’s overall look – physical attributes, armour, weapons and accessories blend well together.
usually only when I’m partied with them (not squad. also not pvp)
or if I happen to stop in the open world in the same place someone else went afk or otherwise is standing around
most commonly happens in fractals

I’m always looking at other people’s characters. And yes, I’ll take screenshots of any that catch my attention. Which is sometimes difficult to do in a huge mob such as a world boss fight.
I think that how much you care about looks may depend in part on what games you’ve played before GW2. If you’re used to few options and fewer good ones, then you’ve trained yourself to not care. If you played something with really good options (CoH as an example), then you’ve seen some impressive stuff and it’s set your standards pretty high.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Sometimes I want to pull out my eyes with a spoon for dessert when I see dragonballhaired- winged – Charr or the profession-bender engineers in assassin’s suit as the OP says .
After studying chromatology and colour’s theory for a few years , even strange colour combinations arouse me sick. Probably my problem.
I am a professional costume judger and I have studied MMO fashion at Yale for the past 15 years and I barf whenever I see the color yellow
I wish I could say I pay close attention, because I really do like how people manage to design their characters and garb, but the fact is that I get motion sick if I play with my camera less than max zoomed out and raised over my head. So everyone’s just this tiny inch high thing on my monitor as a rule. If I’m standing still, eg at bank/TP, then I can zoom in to look at the cool stuff, but then they run off before I can frame the shot.
Over the years I’ve gotten a number of pics of amazing designs, and of ridiculous ones, but I have to say that if you’re a stranger standing next to me hoping I’ll be wowed by you, chances are I can barely see you.
I’m playing on a craptop so everyone but me looks like stock chars with stock animations.
I usually zoom out all the way so I can keep an overview of what’s going on around me, especially in the higher level maps…and at that distance, even my toon is a 2-inch mass of pixels, so no: I very rarely pay attention to what other toons look like. I barely pay attention to what my own toon looks like. As long as the colours aren’t too eye-watering, I don’t care.
What peeves me off in general are the backpacks, be they wings or blades. It’s not that they don’t look good, it’s just that they make pretty much all toons top-heavy and kind of clunky. To each their own, though.
I actually look at people pretty often, usually in the city, comparing them to my characters and seeing if I can steal some of their fashion ideas….like their dye combos or armor mixings.
I don’t spend a thought on the looks of other characters. It’s not interesting to me.
Sometimes, I am pointed to somebody by one of my Teamspeak friends, and then I go looking, but usually I ask myself: “well, yes, that’s a player character. And now?” They are looking all the same to me, like all the people in a crowd.
Yes, there are of course characters that look better than others. But that’s unimportant to me.
More important to me are character names. Sometimes, I browse zergs for the character names instead of fighting. Names tell stories.
Id say very. I love taking screenshots of characters at world bosses. So much variety! There are the funny ones and the gorgeous ones, and also the cringe worthy ones (mostly norns and charrs).
The white haired female thief with all black dyes and Japanese name… Please don’t do that
I try to look decent and unique myself but not there yet!
As a part of the hatred I feel for the megaserver I take care to not look at people. I’d use the low setting that makes everyone a placeholder but I want to see my own characters on all my screens.
But I can’t say that I remember paying much attention to others before megaserver either.
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
What does impress you?
What turns you off?Personally i look at other ppl alot, especially when running in zergs or doing stuff in the cities. It really great when people dress accordingly with their profession or race (I guess I’m a bit inspirera by GW1 there), an Engineer should not look like a ninja and a Sylvari should preferably wear leaves
Too much Particle effects or Troll looks turns me off (especially troll Charr with dragonball Hair and colorfull scarfs) unless they’re somehow really great.
I don’t waste my time worrying about how other people choose to dress their toons.
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
Mildly observant.
What does impress you?
Creative use of COLOURS and less popular armor / weapon skins / outfits.
What turns you off?
Black and / or white armor. They are overused, boring and show no creativity. There are literally hundreds of amazing colours in this game, use them! Also, overused skins (some legendaries, underboob armor, etc) and the bulky bird / angel wings.
underboob armor
Showing off the mammaries is never overused and always welcomed XD XD XD.
In game I spend more time verbally harassing player telling them to go away out of the blue – much like that old man telling the kids to get off his lawn.
I stopped caring about other players looks back at game launch with the new tp cloths – the second something is released you see eeeeevvveryone using it, Its just how life works. I would have preferred the game to have had harder to obtain armour. Many would prolly disagree with that saying they don’t want a second job but games are ment to waste time.
edit – i agree with you mea on the dyes – I caution players not to enter the necro character show thread if you don’t want your soul removed…. complete black dyed armor with black weapons with the character standing in the darkest black corner and taking a a screenshot that resembles a black screen……
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
I’m also going to go with mildly observant. I turn my character model settings down when I’m in a zerg, this way I can turn body count up (cause I’m normally in wvw), which kind of inhibits observation. When I’m running around the open world with the settings turned back up, I only sort of note in passing what people are wearing or wielding.
What does impress you?
I’m not sure anything impresses me anymore. I used to like finding people with interesting, well paired, mix and match set ups, but there isn’t much that’s “new” out there anymore.
What turns you off?
Garish armor / outfit set ups. Loud, over the top looks just annoy me. This could be due to color choices (“hi, were you kittened by crayola today?”) or multitudes of particle effects, etc.
Showing off the mammaries is never overused and always welcomed XD XD XD.
I always see them when I look down, they get boring after a while. :P

Lol ^ so much this.
Not to mention my back aches due to mine on occasion. So it’s not like I can forget they are there.
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
It depends on how active I am and if I’m in a group. So a lot during raids & fractals and less in open world.
What does impress you?
Original combinations and good coloring.
What turns you off?
Genericness and what I would call christmass trees ( a random mix of bright colors).
I’m really interested, as I’m into fashion and style.

Best answear, haha.
100% agree on the thematic skins.
I also love full sets, i prefer full sets over mix- and match because they never dye in the same hue (guess it’s part of my OCD…. that i don’t have). So take a full armor set and try to match it with weaponskins instead!

OMG, exactly!
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
I am absent minded most of the time, but I’m easily attracted by a good color combination of a character.
What does impress you?
Anti-thematic idea but with a cohesive design and poignant style. Of course, the ability to pick the best color palette for their characters. For example: a Thief looks like a hippy beach boy? An elementalist looks like a sultry Madam of the Night? An engineer looks like a cartoon mouse? A necro doesn’t look edgy, but instead, pretty and girly? They are so out of place in the context of the game but that’s how they stand out and force me to notice. I love that genuine individuality that leads to irresistible curiosity and quiet admiration.
What turns you off?
Stacking multiple trendiest items on the market. That is just a desperate cry for attention since the players probably lacks either effort or creativity to be selective with his fashion – and instead, chooses to show off his breadth of wealth.
- doranduck, 2016 on Lore in Raids
I’m pretty observant… when I can actually turn character models on, that is. (My computer is affectionately called “the little toaster that could.”) I’m totally into Fashion Wars 2 myself xD
The stuff that impresses me is the stuff that’s good enough to be on gw2style and get silver or better. Unified color scheme, nothing overly flashy, no wings preferred unless they fit in with the theme. Also, hilarious pet names. xD
Turn-offs? Use of Zodiac top or helmet, any Radiant or Hellfire armor (unless it’s used tastefully, which is rare), wings just for the sake of having wings, all the obese male norn people create as jokes, and scantily clad human female meta. There are more, but these are the big ones.
I play on full potato. So you all look the same to me.
I don’t really pay all that much attention to how people look unless it’s something that stands out such as the charr trying to be Ronald McDonald.
I’ve met Winnie the Pooh and Optimus Prime as well.
The only time I even notice armor/color scheme of other players is during Wintersday while doing the jump puzzle. And than, it’s only the obnoxious stuff where someone has gone out of their way to make their character take up as much space as is virtually possible in game, to seemingly troll people in jump puzzles.
Te Nosce [TC]
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
I really only pay attention when I’m doing business in Rata Sum, or maybe in the quiet moments before a world boss. When there’s action going on, I’m not paying attention to what others are wearing at all.
What does impress you?
While I like the fact that we have a plethora of hairstyles and clothing/armor option, I’ve always been an appreciator of “less is more” in the way of not looking overly gaudy.
What turns you off?
View blocking wings, especially ones on large characters.

Your skin will wrinkle and your youth will fade, but your soul is endless.
I’d like to know how observant you people are of other peoples looks?
I would say very observant. I notice most aesthetic changes in my guildmates’ characters (at least I think I do) and, if I’ve pug’ed with you a few times I’ll have lock on your look, sometimes down to specific dyes and skin colors depending on how many different lighting environments I’ve seen that character in. Aesthetics is a primary reason I play GW2.
It helps to have a deep interest in costume design and my memory keys on what people were wearing/looked like in the event I’m trying to recall.
What does impress you?
Strong thematic concepts, rarely used (but common) weapons, good use of face/body sliders, adventurous color palettes. When someone designs a surprising flow between mismatched sets I’ll try to compliment them.
What turns you off?
White hair on humans, unless they’re going for an elderly look.
That flower-in-the-hair female human hairstyle.
Sherbet colored toddler asura.
All white ‘Sparkle Princesses’.
All black, with more black on top.
Male norns dressed all in pink. It was funny three years ago.
Blaxploitation characters, even if the look is done well.
a Sylvari should preferably wear leaves
I don’t agree with this, btw… Do you decorate your Christmas tree with leaves? O_o;
and ofc, color harmony, when some random rainbow sits near me im like what tha kitten
