How's the game now?
Better? Worse?
Yes.
Which way it’s changed will depend on which player you ask. You might want to say what you thought were the strengths and weaknesses of the game for you and ask how those areas have been altered.
IMO better. They adjusted the HoT experience about six months after HoT’s release to smooth out a number of complaints. Then they started LWS3 a few months later with a somewhat regular release schedule that includes a new map area with each episode. The Last episode of Season 3 should be out in a few weeks with the next expansion likely out by the end of the year with Season 4 of the Living World starting a few months after that. They are trying to avoid the issues that HoT had with a content drought between the end of Season 2 and HoT as well as HoT and the start of Season 3.
They also added a variety of QoL changes, the ability to glide in the original maps if you you have the HoT gliding mastery unlocked, etc.
That said there does appear, based on the quarterly income numbers NCSOFT reports, a notable drop in population since HoT, you being an example. But I think the release cadence since the April 2016 HoT adjustment and the regular episode release rate of Season 3 episodes along with new maps is starting to cause players who left to return for a look.
That’s my two coppers.
RIP City of Heroes
I’ve been playing the game (on and off) since beta, I think it has improved a lot, I like it more and more.
So…
You left after HoT.
So for PvE:
- So you missed LS S3. The LS S3 is seen as one of the better, if not the best Living story season yet with acces to 5 new maps (soon to be 6), ascended trinkets/backs with HoT stats as farmable map rewards.
- In the mean time GW2: -fill in Expansion 2 name here- is due to arive at the end of the year, more details will follow with LW S3: E6.
- You likely missed the Caladbolg mini quest, giving acces to a nearly free ascneded weapon (swords/GS/dagger/scepter/shield) it can be resetted for a minor fee, and swapped around, rest is cheap, HoT stats available .
So for Instanced PvE:
- Raids now have 4 wings with 13 bosses… Legendary armor is finished. Wing 4 has bosses with Challenge Modes. added legendary armors can be bought for 25 Li/ precursor part and the normal cost to upgrade it so 50 LI will buy you another legendary part after the 1st armor.
- Fractals has seen the introduction of ‘Nightmare’ and ‘Chaos’ fractal. Lvl 100 Nightmare Challenge Mode was introduced (Mai Trin was demoted to 98)
- Dungeons: the dungeon frequenter box makes dungeons provided you run 8 paths a day/ 2days about as rewarding as before HoT. The knowledge about speedruns is gone however and runs with low levels are more rule then exception. LFG user knowledge and ettiquette seems at an all time low. Rewards are still interesting as lower level mats do drop and some are becoming increasingly rare.
So for PvP:
- PvP is no longer an E-sport, It has however gotten an automated tournament system and a new hub. Balance patches have made some difference.
So for WvW:
- WvW was overhauled, you can now get ascneded armor in WvW, like the ways you can purchase it in PvP and Fractals, WvW has it’s own skins.
- A new legendary backpackwas introduced (Warbringer) as was done in PvP and fractals before.
General opinion:
- All gamemodes saw improvements
- LS Season 3 was a must-play to me.
- Raids although difficult to get into are pretty manageable
- Fractals is okay as is.
- WvW feels more rewarding
- PvP seems more imnteresting, but I rarely play PvP
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Haven’t played in a very long time. Probably stopped playing maybe a few months after Heart of Thorns release. How’s the game changed since then? Better? Worse?
It’s better in some areas and still lagging behind in others but overall the support for rewards has grown now which is what I’ve had a problem with personally. Additionally there are better armor sets and better chances at getting those armor sets for open world players finally.
Not sure what you had issue with it’s best to elaborate.
