so i was away for a year or more.
i read a few stuff like the screwed up update that ruined the leveling experience etc.
but how is the game doing overal ?
playerbase ?
going downhill , Stagnate or growing?
Feels like Devs giving up or the exact oposite ?
how they doing financialy ? can we expect something more in the future ?
i also heard GW2 got allot of Hits in the face thx to FF14 how true is that ? or just FF fanboys making stories ?
Overal comunity inside the game ?
whats your Opinion ?
(edited by Zoltreez.6435)
The game is basically the same as it was one year ago. If you didnt like the game at that time you still wont like it the way it is now. There is this NPE change (new player experience), but its not as horrible as people make it look like.
The playerbase is going well appearently, there were some surveys showing that gw2 is one of the most popular mmos, losing only to WoW and FFXIV, but i think those surveys applied only to the western market. At least GW2 didnt “fail” like other AAA mmos like wildstar and archeage.
I think the word to define the state of the game right now would be stagnate.
Each system change is designed to make the game worse and worse, stuff like megaserver, npe and trait change all serve as annoyances rather than benefits.
Basically game is alot worse than 2 years ago.
Very stagnant indeed
that does not sound prety good……..
that does not sound prety good……..
Don’t listen to these guys man, if anything the game has gotten way better since release.
The new Living World Season 2 as opened up 2 new zones, great replayable story and nearing it climax soon. The 2 FEATURE packs that were released “one last September” and one “last april” were amazing Quality of Life changes that were needed to be made. There’s to many changes to list and there’s opinions on everything, yet the world definitely feels more lively and they’re setting it up for something big..you can feel it. There’s been a buttload of content, if you want to know about what that was/is, check in the releases page.
that does not sound prety good……..
But it’s not true… The game is much better now than it was an year and half ago… Surely the new dailys and the traits acquisition system needs to be improved but the npe is miles better now, the wardrobe system is perfect and the new maps feel better and different from what we had…
They also improved a lot on their ways to tell the story…
That being said, GW2 needs and expansion size of content.
They screwed traits right the heck up. NPE is weird and seems somewhat pointless.
Pets are still garbage, condition builds are still sad outcasts in pve and the NPC’s that never shut up in taverns are still baking about the same problems and toasts to minister Codpiece.
So, mostly the same, with some inexplicable stupidity glued to the side if its head.
well… bout 70% of the changes made to the game where pointless, destructive or (imo) plain stupid.
-The playerbase clearly shrinks and becomes toxic…cant blame em (me included)
starving for content, classes, skills, traits, new weapons…aka stuffs an Xpac would add
- the devs…really hard to tell, it seems they try to get it fixed..but they sorta try to fix a hole in the wall they bashed in with a sledgehammer with a bandaid and a boo boo kiss…imo of course.
-Ls is mostly sylvari angst…but we got 2 new zones…desert stuff.. very nice (seriosly)
Also mordi is bout to get his kitten off the couch and flex his muscles like it seems. His minions that look like they escaped satans botanical garden itself are quite active
- WvW got a siege disabler…aaaaand…yea thats about it (yay…)
- PVP got an UI update…some new reward tracks..and dont quote me on this but i think 1 or 2 new maps.
- Gem store got a new gem conversion…well 2 of them.. one bout 2 days after the first change cause people complained left and right about it. Also the gem store got a new layout..that you may or may not like…matter of taste.
-Gem store armors shifted to mostly costumes… so if ya like to buy armor skins and mix your armor styles…you wont have many new….though there are reward armors…quite nice ones actually.
- Collections are a thing now. Like to collect crap? Yes? Awesome.. now you can collect the stuff and even get rewards for doing so. Anything.. trash, spoons, event items, skins… is really nice if thats up your alley.
- The dailies worked right? Well screw you.. new dailies cause it wasnt broken so a-net fixed it. Way better rewards (seriosly) but now you get rewarded for even showing up…yay.. challenge! Rewards! 5 stars! A+! You´re winner! ( yea.. i hate it, deal with it)
Also the dailies are now restricted to zones like “logger of ascalon (not gatherer, logger, you go to ascalon and cut wood..no herbs, no ore.. WOOD and nothing else)” or “events in queensdale” what is stupid. Also no salvage, revive and many other dailies anymore. Oh yea.. no monthly either anymore.
- Balancing made quite some formerly underwhelming skills powerfull.
- New skills? Nope… (cha, of course not)
- Leveling feels now like wearing a straight jacket and dragging an anvil behind you.
You get some better rewards though for putting up with the torture. Trait unlock still the same way…just ontop of the stupid NPE. Oh yea.. big parts of the personal story are missing now and you can only access the story all 10 levels cause screw freedom of choice right? Also weapon skills are now level gated too and you cant die in the tutorial…and many many other stupid things.
uhhh… and thats about the short notes with some personal opinion…do with it what you like. Note that the game still is fun…but it does feel like its taking 1 step forward and two steps back.

I played FFXIV briefly. They have a fan base because they have Japan. There are as many Japanese servers as US servers. But there were only about 7 US servers and from what I saw they weren’t that crowded, though admittedly I was in starting areas.
It sure didn’t feel that busy to me and the game may have a lot of content but the entire game is archaic in design. If I wanted to play a traditional MMO I might consider it. As it was, it felt really old to me.
I Quit Gw2 around the time they added the megaserver… it really made trying to complete world bosses and guild events a pain. really have no desire to come back to play unless an expansion is added with more than a few hrs of content.
Zoltreez… Just log in and see for yourself, there is no subscription after all. If you don’t like what you see, then log out and deinstall. Half of these negative comments are either invalid or questionable.

So you just hang around the forums telling players not to come back. Interesting use of your time for a game you aren’t playing.

thats not how it works for me.
i want to see OVERALL what the playerbase thinks of the game atm.
trying to get into another mmo but i dont want my time go in waste in a game where devs just give it up and slowly goes into maintance mode.
thats why im asking what the Playerbase thinks about it to see where its heading.

forums =/= player base
forums are a small fraction of the entire playerbase. Not to mention, that would require everyone who visits the forums to reply to your thread, causing it to span on for pages on end that you would have to sift through in order to figure out if the game is “good”. Not to mention, as said above, people still post here who have quit months ago, or even a year, and still post here, so are those posts even valid when more updates come out?
Not to mention, what if the people who say the game is great, are too busy playing to even respond to this thread? Then you are left with people who are irritated at not getting exactly what they wanted and telling you its bad.
Install, log in, play, decide your own opinion. It costs you nothing but some time. Actually, you could probably be using said time posting on the forums and scanning to be downloading the game and installing…
wvw is as dead as its ever been. pvp has improved slightly. the new story content has been pretty good and the new zones offer you good farming, but the entire gw2 experience still feels the same as it did a year ago.

I personally think that plan is flawed, but whatever you want. If you want my opinion, they are certainly not going into maintenance mode since a new story mode and areas have opened up (and more will open with the new living story chapters this month). There are new skills and traits, though now you gotta earn them through activities or purchase them with in-game currency. The pvp can earn you gear and transmutation charges based on a progression system rather than points. Legendary items can be changed to any stat type and are 5% stronger than exotics. There is legendary armor and crafting now. Any item you soulbound or degrade gets stored in a wardrobe database, so you can transmute any gear you have to those appearances (So you can actually look whatever you want and not be hindered by stat restrictions…. I’m looking at you Destiny!!!). Dungeons give you gold. The tequatle fight is harder and more group coordinated. The megaserver consolidates all players, so more world events and bosses are being cleared. Your daily login progression gets saved. Lions arch has been literally been screwed up…
And the list goes on and on… I really doubt they’ve been going maintenance mode this entire year. Like I said, ya gotta see for yourself. Getting the opinion only on those who reply to your topic won’t get you the full story, and you have no idea if they’re just feeding you outdated or biased info.

i started downloading at night and still downloading.
its true that your saying but its also true that the players come to the forum to complain abbout something usualy the player who actualy CARES abbout the game and want to see it improwed not the boycoting people that never show up here and just plays it then do something else.
also the majority of times when im trying a new mmo i found out that its totaly true what i read on the forum about it.
forums =/= player base
But for what it’s worth, I think GW2 is still the best MMO out there. By quite a wide margin.

And yet they are most honest player base, that at last have guts to say it “we are not happy with what we get”, they are most loyal players that actually want only one thing, to improve gaming experience and seeing game to grow… there are those that are happy with the game and like it as it is, but again you have pleanty of those that play game just because they still believe that game will shift up and get an upgrade( not LS way of “upgrade” )..
As owner of post said, he doesn’t like to waste time on dead game, my idea is the same.
Currently i only find fun in WvW, without that i would be gone for good. Sadly that’s the only thing that keeps me playing.

Yeah but with the megaserver tech the game is still far from dying or dead. Full instances of Silverwastes, multiple full instances all killing Tequatl and Wurm daily, etc.
Granted it’s now even harder than it was before to judge the populations levels of the realms, and I don’t really trust the “high” and “very high” indications of the world selection dialog, but whatever the reality, there’s always enough people to do whatever you want. WvW might be an exception because it’s not affected by megaservers. That’s too bad, but I expect the scene to be revived again with the next WvW season (which will probably again bring something new/improved too).
Basaltface pretty much got it right.
One sincere piece of advice as a returning veteran – do not delete any character you already have. Seriously – DO NOT DELETE ANY OF YOUR OLD CHARACTERS YOU WILL REGRET IT. If you delete and roll up a replacement character you will run face first into the “new and improved” pay 43 gold + 360 skill point trait system OR you will have to go to everywhere and do tasks that are often over-leveled, bugged, or grindy (map completion to unlock a trait for example). Or some a combination of both. Check out the trait thread that is usually on page one or two of this section of the forum if you want more info.
The game is better than its ever been. Veterans like me are bitter because of changes to things we preferred, but the game is better, and it is growing. Anyone who has stopped playing would love to return, they are simply waiting for more content, which is completely understandable especially in a game without a sub.

The player base is deeply divided and has been for a long time. So you’re not really going to get any real idea of what the playerbase thinks, because there’s more than one demographic within the playerbase.
Also the forums are too toxic for a lot of people who actually like the game and they’ve stopped posting. Try posting on reddit, and see how the response there varies.

See this kind of post, more than any other, is something that I take issue with. Listen to what you’re saying. We’re more honest because we’re complaining. That’s horrible.
You may well honestly dislike something about the game, but that doesn’t mean that people who like something about the game that you dislike are dishonest. In fact, I think there are plenty of people who don’t like one thing about the game and then look for other things to dislike to try to prove to themselves that they should have left, sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
And of course, plenty of people come to game forums to say crap just to troll. Not you, perhaps, but people do it, and everyone knows people do it. I know someone who not only does it, but admitted to me that he does it. He loves getting the reaction.
So yeah, not everyone with a negative point is going to be more honest than a person with a positive one.
I generally like the NPE but I generally don’t like the new trait system.
I generally like the new story rewards and how it now is structured, but I don’t like what they’ve done to the end of the story.
I have criticisms too. However, I like a lot about the game and don’t ignore that because I have an issue with the game.
Firelysm probably used the wrong words there. You’re just nitpicking at a single word he said without taking into account his point.
His point was that people complaining on the forum are people still playing. They’re complaining because things are going bad in the game they love. When it gets too bad and people are really fed up, they just leave, they don’t post on the forum anymore. So insulting forum posters by saying “nah, don’t listen to them, they’re just a fraction of the player base, they don’t matter” is just wrong.

I’m sorry but this isn’t a single post or the single time I’ve seen the post. People on these forums use terms like fan boy and white knight to try to dismiss perfectly valid opinions all around. There is a pervasive attitude on this forum that if you’re complaining you must be right, because you’re being honest. It’s not the first time it’s been said and it probably won’t be the last. So it hardly qualifies as nitpicking. He said it and obviously from what he said he meant it.
More to the point there are many people who post negative things here who don’t play the game and have said they don’t play it…but they continue to comment on it.
Just log in and play. Check things out for yourself and see what has changed. The forums here are hardly a worthy representation of the player base (even if I AM here).

Its not so simple really. Thing is there is no absolute truth about what is great and whats bad about this or any other game. Thus statements like “they are most loyal players that actually want only one thing, to improve gaming experience” and " yet they are most honest player base" are completely invalid.
let me illustrate
Someone who doesnt like the game might state that the new trait system is aweful.
Vayne who loves the game will also state the new trait system is worst then it was.
I like the game and feel the new traits system is actually a step in the right direction cause it adds horizontal progression and incentives me to play a wider variety of content Case in point while I used to stay away from Orr I’ve been there quite a few times since this change and enjoyed it cause I only had to have small bite sizes of Orr and not flat out live there so to speak.
The one who doesnt like the game as well as Vayne may post opinions that try to suggest a change of direction is needed for traits even to the point of going back to what it was before.
I on the other hand might post suggesting the changes to traits where a step in the right direction and more such changes are welcome.
More specifically focusing exclusively on traits and ignoring everything else
Person who doesnt like game / Vayne may tell op game is in a worst state that in it was 1 year ago while I would tell op game is actually more fun. (again taking only traits into account and nothing else)
who of us is being most loyal?
Who of us is being most honest?
all of us are there is no more honest or less honest there is an opinion.
Now OP may share the same opinion Vayne has and agree with him that traits were better as they were 1 year ago. He may agree with me and enjoy the new system more. Whats definitely the case however is what OP likes isnt going to change based on how many people on the forum like or dislike the changes. That is why I totally agree with people suggesting he should try it for himself. A lot has changed in this last year. There is only one way to know if it was a change for the good or not and thats by trying out yourself.
im pleasently suprised that there wasnt a Single pure troll post yet.
well thats a + compared to other games forums lol
no realy im suprised.
you guys not started bashing killing eachother lol
im still on the interned right ?

man.. honestly… i will now tell you something just from my point of view. The point of view from somebody you COULD call a… “black knight” for the moment
Do you really think i still would be there if i wouldnt love this game to death? Do you think i would even bother to read and write in a forum of a game im not invested in? Tell ya something… i tried a lot of mmo games since i discovered the genre. The latest 3 i tried where aeon, rift and final fantasy online… not realm reborn and also not the new one(or is the same? Heck i couldnt give less of a darn)…just ff online.
I played aeon for 2 weeks…never even bothered to go to the forums and speak my mind.. i was too busy sitting all 30 seconds and waiting till my health regenerates…was so boring that i faded in and faded out without getting even noticed by anybody.
Rift…well.. it looked like something i would like…that evil purple theme, the way you skill…but nope was also a step into the toilet. It bored me to death and i didnt even level long enough to equip a new chest piece i found.
Same like aeon… fade in…fade out…no complains and nothing. I canceled my subscription 3 days after i registered my account. FF Online.. oh boy… same scenario…though i never even fought a single monster cept that thing in the “tutorial”…or whatever that parade thingy was. Know what i did? Playing a boring as kitten mini game to craft chopper earrings…and like at rift and aeon i faded in and out without a noise.
Never saw a single forum of these 3 games..know why? Because i didnt care, the games where kitten to me, a waste of time…and nothing else. Guild wars 2….man.. i am glad that i picked that one up. Its a game that delivered…it was perfect, it was an experience to step into the world and get invested in whats going on. The fluid battle system, the fresh take on mmo, the races…art.. the darn personal story, the towns..architecture, culture….sooo much kittening yes. Leveling wasnt boring, to make a build is\was stupitly easy. Perfect controll all the time.
Ya know man… this was…and still is love. I love the game.. i kittenING LOVE the game, do you understand? kittening cupid and kitten, rose pedals and kittening heart shaped boxes with chocolate in it, sunset on the kittening beach love. I dont want this love to end, so i complain and raise my voice, point out the things i see as a flaw, ask for more content cause i want to stay in tyria and kitten about stuff i feel threatens my love to the game. To me anything i see as negative that happens to the game is actually painfull. Like seeing something you like destroyed…or a child growing up to be a crack dealer instead of a rocket scientist that the child technically could be so kittening easy.
Heck i would pay for the childs education (and i technically do with usually about 30 bucks a month or more since i play this game) and i only see the child investing into its crack addiction, dumping itself down, ignoring bugs… feels not nice. Hence why i kitten and moan and i will kitten and moan till i dont care anymore, and i dont want that i dont care anymore one day. I wanna go the road with the game to its end and i want that travel to be a long one, for the game and for me.
Vayne man… you really do many many times annoy the kitten out of me but i also see your points belive it or not and yea… i wont even pretend like your “white knight view” isnt as valid as mine is and like you dont raise points here and there that actually make me ponder for a moment. Just thought id give you a totally honest view of somebody who (i belive atleast) could be considered a normal everyday forum kittener who isnt alright with the way things go.
I do belive there are many like me (well maybe not that overkill in love) who want to remain in tyria or just return to it and have that good feeling again. I dont claim i know how anybody but i feel about it…but i got a hunch that atleast 70% of the “black knights” feel a similar way man. Also thats not an attack or something, just some honest stuff i wanted to say anyways sometime.
And yea.. its not the topic of the thread…sue me.
^^^^^^^^Allot of kittens died this day……
snip.

I wasn’t singling out any person in my response and I don’t have, contrary to popular belief, anything against people complaining. I have problems with people exaagerating complaints or saying the game is dying or saying that I’m more honest because I have criticisms, implying I’m less honest.
That’s the post I replied to and that’s the post I defended, nothing more.
@ Vayne yea i know man. I just wanted to say that since a long time now…nothing more or less
A bit hard to tell, because Anet dont’ release population information. And the mega system put everyone on the same map, so there are always people around.
Only concrete data is there isn’t much drop on sales. So people probably staying around, at least the paying people do.
I’m in tier 2 wvw. Activities have been a bit low in wvw, though I’m not much of a wvw players. There are always people in EOTM though. For sPvP the queue time is around 2 minutes for unranked arena, so that’s pretty good. I don’t know about rank arena since I dont’ do them.
im pleasently suprised that there wasnt a Single pure troll post yet.
well thats a + compared to other games forums lol
no realy im suprised.
you guys not started bashing killing eachother lol
im still on the interned right ?
moderators here do a most excellent job. They’d never allow that to happen. They’d close the thread or even delete it if it ever were to get out of hand.
Still for the most part things dont generally get personal which is nice like you said
I’m sorry but this isn’t a single post or the single time I’ve seen the post.
More to the point there are many people who post negative things here who don’t play the game and have said they don’t play it…but they continue to comment on it.
man.. honestly… i will now tell you something just from my point of view. The point of view from somebody you COULD call a… “black knight” for the moment
I wouldnt call you a black knight at all. The game isnt perfect, no game is perfect and voicing your opinion on what you dont like is perfectly fine. Even we who love the game do that. I for example find the game a ted bit too easy and I preferred how by being temporary changes in season 1 of the living story felt more impactful.
I dont think anyone has ever said there should be no negative feedback that would be very bad indeed.
I am not sure how to explain it. the best I can come up with is you know how we’re thought to focus on the argument and not on the person when disagreeing? the same should apply to the game. Some negative feedback doesnt focus on the issue but rather tries attack the game and the developers directly or indirectly.
Some also try to over exaggerate issues or even to resort to blackmail so to speak.
Like you said perfectly well probably the vast majority if not all of us love the game and want it to succeed and keep growing and becoming better and better. You know who probably wants that more then we do? Anet themselves. This for them isnt just entertainment its their lively hood as well.
The issue we have and I can understand Vayne perfectly on this is sometimes people try to be destructive perhaps in a misguided attempt to be constructive. (Definitely not talking about you, your post was pretty good)
Let me give you an example to better illustrate what I mean. Sometimes you see posts on the note of this game lacks content, except for a couple of small zones the game is the same as it was at launch. The core message that the game lacks content may be true to a degree but the poster would have exaggerated the issue to prove a point. Now someone like me would retort thats not true and provide a list of stuff we got since release to which the reply would be ohh but that doesnt count cause its not my type of content or even your count is false because that should have been there at launch or other such reasons or worst yet your opinion is dismissed cause well you’re a white knight and such.
Thats a big big problem on many levels. The biggest issue is gives the false impression to people and these things stick and fester. Such a poster may think his feedback is helping the game when its actually killing it slowly. People see such posts and trust me they’ll have a much easier time to err on the side of caution and believe the now content comment even when presented with a list if people callout the person giving the list a “fraud” which is what using derogatory terms like white knight ultimately does. Which then brings use to the next issue. How many times you see comments on gaming sites or other MMO forums how say without a subscription you dont get content updates and they specifically name this MMO an example? And thats really tragic because its actually the other way round. This is definitely one of the most frequently if not the most frequently updated MMO out there. What will someone seeing that message who never experienced Gw2 think though?
I can answer that myself. I started Gw1 a couple of years late because of such comments. Because people pushed me away with their feedback that Gw1 isnt a real mmo because it was instanced, that there was nothing to do but PvP, etc.. Ironically turned out all that negative feedback was actually the game strengths and what made it my favorite game of all time for a really really long while.
Its not negative feedback thats a problem, in fact I dont think I saw anyone never post about something they disliked at least something about the game. The problem is taking it too far and becoming destructive rather then constructive. Ultimately its in no ones best interest to drive potential players away. I am not saying we should decisive them into join the game of course, by lying to them about what they will find either. That would be equally detrimental . What we should do is discuss what we like or dislike without belittling anyone’s opinion and let them make up their mind.
The game is pretty stagnate, but not worse than 2 years ago. The only really kittenty feature they added is the system how you get the traits (via in game events and stuff which can be annoying due to not happening for hours and you just wait for it there).
It seems, though, that they will announce something rather big in January 24.
There have been ups and downs generally, but pretty much all of it overshadowed by the trait changes for me. It’s really hard to be positive about the good things when one of the most fundamental aspects of the game has been so messed up for so long.
The community (Both in-game and on the forums) is very polarised about the game’s health. Some say it’s dying, others say it’s going strong.
Personally, I feel population is declining, but there’s still plenty of people around to do events, dungeons, world bosses, etc even in the middle of the day on a weekday, so things can’t be too bad
I adore the game but I am one of the most critical. However, as concisely and neutral as I can…
Good:
New wardrobe system means you can change the appearance of anything you own without merging 2 items.
New outfit system lets you put a single piece skin over your clothing.
Minis can be displayed at all times.
Living Story continues to improve.
You now have a much higher chance to drop loot that you can use, and personal story loot is great, meaning you often dont have to buy any gear till you are level 80.
Megaservers mean that in PVE game world, you will rarely see an empty map, though some issues with large guild events need to be addressed.
Tequatl has been buffed, and a new large scale even in Bloodtide Coast has been introduced (Triple Trouble).
Bad:
New characters now have to unlock traits with in game tasks or purchasing with gold and skill points. Many of the tasks require grouping, dungeons or time-gated tasks. Expect to be level 80 with fewer than 10 traits unlocked.
The levelling system has been needlessly changed to make other skills take longer to acquire.
Craftable precursors never happened.
The PVE game world is pretty much as it was except for Kessex Hills and Lions Arch that got wrecked, and 2 new maps called Dry Top and Silverwastes.
Personal story got rearranged and messed up so it no longer makes sense.
Worst:
The Anet staff very rarely communicate with us, and we feel that our concerns are completely ignored. Long running complaints about the trait acquisition have been blatantly ignored for over 9 months.

You read the lack of a formal reply as being ignored. I’m sure they are well aware of it but simply aren’t in a position to do anything about it in the short term. That is they can’t simply revert it back. To many changes in too many places in common code to unscramble the egg so to speak.

Which is fine, but they haven’t said that. They said, at one point, that they might make minor changes, and asked for a tl;dr version of the months of feedback. Then they repeated this a few months later.
We still don’t know why the changes are there, or what they’re supposed to achieve (it obviously isn’t for the build diversity that the marketing suggested it was, as it achieves the exact opposite).
If they’d just account bind unlocks, this would have been done with months ago. But as it is they’ve left a fundamentally broken core system, that is actively repelling players, in place for nine months.

Account bind which unlocks. When I leveled a second character, I didn’t have vistas or skill points locked. What’s not unlocked now on your second go through?
Can I chime in here?
