How to Convince Dad to Play Guild Wars 2?
tell him how this is the perfect game for casual players
Tell him it’s a pay once play it for life kind of game.
and also this is one of the best reviews out there.
Let him know this will give the 2 of you quality time together. Which can be hard for parents and kids to get nowadays.
I wish the fan made video Guardians of Tyria were still around in its first, pre-Mesmer form. That video was what I showed to everyone I could before and during beta to demonstrate how awesome the game would be. It used a Two Steps From Hell soundtrack and was perfectly timed to the music (after the maker edited in Mesmer footage it was too rushed).
I don’t know your dad so I have no idea what would persuade him. Maybe let him play with a character slot on your account for a few hours, with the understanding whatever he does will be deleted? If you trust him not to spend your gold or wreck your gear, anyway. Then he can get a hands on feel for the game. Or, in order not to get banned for account sharing, let him watch over your shoulder and dictate what you do until he’s itching to do it himself and orders a copy.
Have you tried asking him to play with you? Honestly, if he plays games like this already he won’t have any real reason to say no, especially if you offer to buy it for him or something.
If he doesn’t play games like GW2 already, my advice would be to let him try one of your characters or something. Also, YouTube some GW2 videos.
Surely the answer depends on who your dad is as a person/gamer?
The way I’d get my dad to play is totally different to how I’d get my father-in-law to play for example because they’re both into different sorts of games and have different attitudes to them.
My dad travels a lot for work so I’d emphasise the fact that there’s no monthly fee so he won’t end up wasting money if he can’t play much for a month, and also won’t end up behind everyone else. I’d also talk about how the way you pick your skills, traits and attributes to work together is very tactical, a lot like the old RPGs I started off playing (which he installed for him to play).
Whereas if it was my father-in-law I’d focus more on how the game is very casual friendly, you don’t have to be a super skilled gamer and you can take your time learning while still having fun. I’d encourage him to pick a simple profession and focus on PvE but also to join a friendly, active guild and get talking to them because I think the social aspect would really appeal to him. But one that doesn’t use voice chat because otherwise every time he said anything his wife would be coming in asking if he was talking to her and then complaining that he was talking “to the computer”.
And for contrast if it was my brother I’d focus on the fact that you can jump straight into PvP/WvW without having to level up in PvE first, how every profession can be DPS (or a tank/support role, but DPS is the one he’d like) and how you can largely pick and choose your own goals to work towards because that’s the thing that makes him lose interest in a game – when he has to go through something he finds boring to get to the fun parts.

Let Marjory and Kasmeer help you:
Tell him that he is too slow and old to play this game and he will rage and start to play.

Just introduce him to some of the in-game content. Who’s your Daddy?
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

Easy.. Just explain he gets to spend quality time with you. No real dad would pass that up.
Wow, wasn’t expecting so many people to reply. Thanks, all of you!
My dad is a casual gamer, but is normally too busy to play these kinds of games. Eventually though, in the near future, he’ll have more time to do games and of the sort. I asked him to play with me, but he said not yet. I’m hoping to edge him towards buying it pretty soon <3
Tell him you will eat your veges and clean your room if he plays with you.
Show him the price of a Legendary weapon→ only $600 USD; and tell him Evon loves him.
God i am so old. I played duck hunt with my father when i was young.

You are old? I played Duck Hunt with my children when I was young…er. Lol.
OT…If your dad says he has no time, then the lack of monthly subscription might help encourage him. Getting in before Season Two starts might help, but it might discourage him, as well. You would know best. Good luck.
Anyone have any good suggestions on how to make him want to play it wih me? Like any videos, reviews, forumd topics?
Kinda hard to do without knowing anything about him…but if he plays with you, then it’s good quality family time?

GW2 is one of the very few MMOs that someone with time constraints can reasonable play and not fall behind or be locked out of parts of the game. In that regard, I don’t think there is a better choice for him. If he still feels like he doesn’t have enough time, then you’ll need for something else than an MMO.
