How to I earn Hero Points now?
Skill points have become hero points, so make sure you get all of the core world ones. Then there are 10pt ones in Maguma (HOT). Many of these are champion points so you’ll have to wait around until a bunch of players are around to help you.
do all in “old” tyria, once done those you only need 60 more in the “new” tyria. goes really fast tbh
But my Elite Specialization still says I need Hero Points. Used to be, every post 80 “level” generated a HP, if I recall, thus allowing players to build them up steadily even without doing skill challenges.
That changes ages ago.
Skill points were given by leveling and by completing skill challenges. When the specialization update came back in June, they changed how it functioned and split the skill points into two new currencies: spirit shards and hero points.
Hero points you get by leveling up beneath 80 and hero challenges. No other way to get them.
So question: how do I build up my HP to unlock the 200 points (or whatever) need to complete my Elite Specialization? It can’t just be through skill challenges alone can it?
Yes. It is. You can get 214 hero points from hero challenges prior to HoT maps. Leveling to 80 will give you all the hero points you need for all core skills and traits – placing you at 0 without doing any hero challenges.
With HoT, you can get another 400 hero points from hero challenges.
It is not possible to fully unlock your elite specialization without doing some HoT content. If you get 210 hero challenges in core content, you’ll need 4 hero challenges from HoT to fully unlock the elite specialization.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
OK, thanks. That sounds reasonable.
Follow up question: I keep getting XP. Killing things, discovering new locations.
Where is this XP going? Is it being applied to anything?
At level 80, XP is going towards core world masteries. If you level in Maguma, you get HOT mastery. You have to unlock the mastery points but you can’t use them unless you fill the bar. Also be watchful. If you level your bar at level 80 but don’t use the point, you won’t get more mastery XP (until the bar is empty). So use your mastery points as soon as you fill the xp bar.

Actually, not true. From another thread where this was discussed, once the bar is filled it starts filling up another bar regardless of whether or not you’ve assigned mastery points to the filled bar. Either it will chose the next bar itself or you can select a bar, but either way Mastery XP is not lost until everything possible is filled up.
From personal experience, mine did that. It started filling up the fractal mastery line when I completed one of the pact commander lines and didn’t notice.
ANet may give it to you.

To be able to put XP towards Masteries, either in the core world or HoT, you need to complete the first step of the Heart of Thorns story, Prologue to Maguuma/Torn From The Sky. Until you’ve done that on one character on your account, you can’t earn Masteries.
Am I storing XP for some future Mastery blowout once I start the HOT storyline and complete Torn from the Sky, or should I pause Season 2 and prioritize unlocking Masteries right now? Does that question make sense? Am I wasting / losing the XP?
Right now your XP is being wasted, yes. It’s your call whether or not you want to start earning your masteries at the cost of spoiling some of the story by skipping ahead.
The “core Tyria” masteries aren’t terribly important to get, if you’re not planning on crafting a precursor weapon or extensively playing Fractals. You will need the Heart of Thorns masteries to be able to progress in the expansion maps, but you also won’t be able to earn XP towards them without actually playing in those maps, which you can’t do while doing through Season Two. So the choice is yours.
OK, thanks for the tips, I’ll use my amazing Chronomancer skills to skip forward in time for a bit to unlock Masteries.
Anet – WTH? This kitten is confusing, and I shouldn’t be wasting XP because I’m not at exactly the stage you want me to be at expansion launch.

I agree, and it is a shame that you have to spoil season 2 in order to unlock masteries. Season 2 episodes give huge amounts of XP as completion rewards and require level 80, so all that XP goes to waste unless you first spoil the ending and then return to the story. That seems like a nasty trick to play on new players who are taking their first character through the game and spent gems to get that story. “Okay, new player, you can either spoil the story you paid for or forgo some of the rewards from the story to avoid spoiling it. You choose,” sez ANet.
not so hard to do first two missions without reading and with speakers off to get mastery open tho.
You can get 214 points from Central Tyria which will unlock all skills, all core specializations and all but the last two elite specialization skills.
After that go to Verdant Brink to get a few HPs for the rest.
Alternatively, I believe that you can also get those extra HPs from the Borderlands, Edge of the Mists and Eternal Battlegrounds, unless they changed it.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

Borderlands and EB has been included in those 214
189 Core
3 Per Border and 3 in EB = 12
Krait Obelisk Shard
Rest is in Silverwastes and Drytop.

Almost. Your total is correct, but there are actually four in EB (Dredge cave, ogre camp, krait camp, and Stonemist), for a total of 13 in WvW. SW/DT between them have 11.
