How to get hero points?
I doubt that “grind PvE skill challenges” will take more than an hour to be completed. On top of that – most people already have some of the challenges done, if not all. So you can’t really call that a grind.
Plus there are some skill challenges in WvW as well so I bet those will also be converted to grant hero points.

65 skill challenges. Even if you take 1 minute per skill challenge, that’d take more than an hour. If you are creating a new toon for WvW (or your current toon is all WvW and no map completion), you’d have to open the map as you won’t be able to just WP near the skill challenges. Definitely a grind.

As a solo roamer, this would still take a lot less time than the time I would need to earn the necessary gold to unlock every trait on my recent alts.
In the current system, even the alts I play a lot only have half of their traits and skills unlocked. Only using the skill points you get for getting to 80 and the hero challenges available in WvW, you’ll be able to unlock most of them now. On a ranger for example, you never need to unlock shouts. On thief, I never use tricks and traps in WvW (apart from the situational Scorpion Wire). There’s an entire trait line on my mesmer I never use: I will not need to step into PvE with this character. I have the feeling you’re just ranting for the sake of ranting at this point.

More than a minute, and there’s more skill challenges than 65 (you would want that elite spec, right?). Not sure about the precise number, but if we add those that do not show in map completion number (new maps, home instance, wvw) it will be over 200. With 2-3 mins per challenge (and some would take more) it’s 7-10 hours. Per character.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

You don’t have to do every single hero challenge on each of your char to unlock everything. You need only 65 of them, in addition to getting your character to 80.
There are 12 skill challenges in the WvW maps, right? So you’ll need 53 more challenges do unlock everything, play like 15 minutes per day in PvE and you’ll have it all before you notice.
Also I doubt that your toons NEVER touched anything in PvE, so you probably have a few challenges done, reducing the “grind” even more.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

People keep bring up the whole “forced to do PvE” stuff.
But do you really NEED to have every single trait in the whole game unlocked? Most people stay with one or two different builds in WvW, why would they need to have every single possible build in the whole game unlocked for that, when you will only ever use a handful of them?

SO MUCH GRIND! WHY ANET WHYYYYY
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
To answer your questions. No there will likely not be any other way to get hero points because, it seems, Anet wants to have a limited number of them and the only way to do that is to not have them drop from anything. You will need to take your WvW characters to PvE and do some Hero challenges there if you want to unock anything above the 413 you will likely have (that’s 400 from leveling and 13 from the challenges in WvW)
My recommendation is to get as many skill challenges done now so that you get the skill point (which will turn into some mystic forge currency) and get credit when the skill challenge becomes a hero challenge (get the hero point too)
EDIT: i suspect the Elite Spec will require many more hero points than the core specs because it will also have various skins and likely the skills spread in it

They might also go with a vertical progression style implementation where they bloat the numbers. What if the elite spec cost ~200+ hero points to unlock? The trick is that all skill challenges in HoT would be worth more whereas all existing skill challenges are only worth 1 point.
If they do that, playing through the new areas will be required to unlock it, though you’ll likely have to anyways assuming there’s a story behind it. If they don’t do that however, the first elite spec will be quickly acquired and they’ll be able to fit in another one before limiting them to expansions only. In the end, it’s the same – you’re required to play through the new content, as if they raised the level cap.

I think the elite spec is already locked behind a gate, so you will need to play the new stuff just to unlock the reward track to get the stuff. I don’t see them making challenges worth more in HoT than in the normal world (although i do think the track will need more points as stated above). If they want you to get more points in HoT, then they will put more challenges in there.

Yeah .. It tooks longer of course, since mostly if you don’t have the challenges you
also haven’t explored the maps, so you first need to run there and then find
the points.
Did that with some characters that were around 40-45 points, and it more or less
took me 2-3 hours to get those 20-25 points each time.
Of course other people may know all maps soo good that they find all those challenges
blindly, and know exactly what route to run to make the 65 fastest ^^
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Jon said in the video showing the traits that to unlock all the base skills, you would only need to do 65 of the ~220 skill challenges in the world. He explicitly said not including elites.
So long Treeface.
“…Kormir? I know not of whom you speak.”
As someone that doesn’t do WvW unless it’s to get a pet wolf for a ranger, here’s what I’m hoping they do:
Put in merchants where you can turn in Badges of Honor (that’s still the WvW currency, right?) and buy an unlock on all the Skill/Hero Challenges in a zone. When you buy it, you get the points as if you’d done the skill challenges in the zone, and they all become “done”. If you had a couple done already, then you don’t get points for them, just the ones you hadn’t done yet.
This way, you can earn the points in WvW, but you still hit the same cap as someone doing PvE and mixing them doesn’t give you an advantage.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
