Q:
How exactly would I gather digital copies of the game in order to gift them to others?
I sent a ticket a while ago, but the response was not very clear. The questions I asked in the ticket were:
- is there a way for the game code/confirmation email to be sent to them without much extra hassle? (different recipient than payee)
- can I purchase the game, and send a code to the recipient? (is it a simple code? or can I forward the email?)
- does gifting in any way, diminish their ability to obtain customer service support? (since they were not the original payee)
- is there a time limit to when a code would need to be activated? (if i were to purchase multiple copies as prizes/giveaways)
The reply I got was:
Normally, purchases made online from us can be used only on the account where the purchase was made. As such, it is not possible to purchase serial codes for friends. Usually, we can recommend purchasing copies directly from a local or online retailer, which can be given as a gift.
However for Guild Wars 2, since our system requires an e-mail address to be provided during the purchase process, you may enter your friend’s e-mail address, and after purchase, e-mail or postal mail the code/receipt to your friend. Alternately, you can enter your own e-mail address, receive the receipt/code, and forward the e-mail to them.
The way it is worded makes me think there is no way to gift, but also a few ways to gift, which is why the response isn’t clear to me.
It would seem, I could purchase the game from online retailers that are not ArenaNet and that would let me send a code, or purchase, and forward and email…but thte first paragraph claims it would require “the account the purchase was made”…which would be mine?
Has anyone else been able to gift GW2 to people relatively easily? I have passed up buying multiple copies on sales due to the fact that there is no easy way to gift/a proper FAQ explaining the gifting process.
EDIT: Adding the proper way to gift in the OP for other players:
Yes, there is a way to gift a copy of Guild Wars 2. The steps that blue outlined are accurate:
- Purchase the game through the in-game store
- Upon receive of your purchase confirmation e-mail, relay that intact (with serial code unused) to your intended gift recipient. (Hint: Check the recipient e-mail address carefully.)
- Your gifted friend or family member creates the account with the serial code that you sent him or her.

You can buy the digital download and send them the unused serial number you receive. Just make sure you don’t register it and make an account, let them do that. Then all they have to do is register and download the game.

I think what they mean is buying physical copies from other retailers as opposed to digital versions from Anets online store, which would require you to manually put in a friends personal info. Basically if you want to gift it for someone, buy a physical retail box version and give that to your friend/
It was easy for me to buy the game physically and give it from hand to hand.

Not all my friends are so easy to reach.
And when games go on sale, I tend to buy several copies and give them away to people that are either friends or on social media, so that makes it a bit harder.
