I am a newbie to this game and when I purchased I got 4000gems.
In the game I received a mail saying that the 4000gems will be deposited into the account within 72 hours.

Can someone tell me how to use these gems to boost my character with respect to the character’s damage etc ?.
Also do we have any concept of “wow’s heirloom” weapons in GW2 ?
Or Trading post is the only way to get better gear ?

The gemstore sells cosmetic items (outfits, armor skins, and weapon skins) and things such as extra inventory bag slots, bank tabs, extra character slots, makeover kits, mini pets, etc. You can’t buy anything to boost your character’s damage or attributes and stats.

If you want better/different stats for your gear, you have to craft it, buy it on the TP, or get it as drops from playing.

I personaly would wait to spend gems when there is a sale on something you need like bag/bank space or extra character slot

First, welcome to GW2. Take your WoW mindset and throw it out the window. GW2 plays very differently from WoW, and if you come in to GW2 expecting a “WoW clone”, you’re going to be highly disappointed. There are similarities, but overall, it’s a different game.

As for gems, you can’t buy power or anything like that. Like others have said, the gem store (cash shop) in GW2 is purely cosmetic and convenience. No power buffs or stronger gear in the gem store. It’s all mostly just fancy fluff.

There are no heirlooms in GW2 like there is in WoW.

As for gear, it is similar to WoW. You get it from drops, crafting, dungeons, and just general rewards for completing maps or events. You can buy it from the trading post if you want, but as a new player, I’d advise against that. You level pretty fast, so don’t waste your money on new upgrades while you level, just to out level them as soon as you get them.

Unless you’re a heavy farmer or trading post flipper, you won’t make a ton of money. This isn’t like WoW where gold pours out your ears. So save your money and try to stay away from the trading post till you have got the hang of things.

I would suggest bag slots for your favourite character – good luck.

Well, you cant technically buy power, unless you sell the gems for gold and buy whatever gear you want on the Trading Post.

I would advise against this unless you’re sure you’re going to keep this character. Bag slots are character bound once applied and if you decide you don’t like the character, you can’t get the bag slot back to apply to a different character.

I would first suggest bank slots.

100% agree. Bank tabs first.

Welcome to GW2! When I first started on GW2 I expected it to be the same as WoW but as others have said it’s nothing like WoW other than the fact that it’s an MMO. Without slating the WoW community too much, the GW2 community is incredibly friendly and helpful.

Your gems will take pretty much the whole 72 hours to reach your account unless your extremely lucky (that’s assuming these 4000 gems came with the ultimate edition of GW2).

You can’t buy power/buffs as others have mentioned but you can get xp boosters on the gem store. You get the handed to you throughout the game anyway so they’re not worth spending gems on.

Your best bet if you’re not fussed about cosmetic items is to keep an eye on the gem store exchange rate to change in your favour. As some point over the next few days it will give you 250g for around 1200 gems. Don’t do what I did and exchange for 1500 – 1600 gems. I lost out on around 800 gems through my impatience. Then when you hit lvl 80 you can buy all of the powerful gear that you want unless you prefer farming which is even more fun

Playing through the main story will give you gear much more powerful for your current lvl at that time than you’ll be able to find on the tp. I found this out AFTER I wasted loads of gold lol

Also in GW2 unlike WoW, with the dungeon loot drops EVERYONE gets that same amount of items and those items are different for everyone so you never get abuse as no-one rolls for gear.

I know I gave you more information than you asked for (sorry). Good luck!
