How will Anet handle all the downloads?
With fire extinguishers, I suppose…
We have been downloading the expansion for months already.

The same way they handled all the downloads of a much bigger game at launch?
ANet may give it to you.
They have been doing it this way since the start of the first GW. I think they know what they are doing. I am surprised that most games out there still do hours of down time to update and download content to people. And sometimes the hours run into being a day or even 2.
Most data is already installed on your pc right now. They just need to activate it and the content will be there. There will probably be a slightly large download, but nothing overbearing.
Like said above, alot of the data is already on your PC. Just look at your GW2.dat it is much bigger than before all the expansion announcement stuff and the beta’s. I believe it used to be about 17,6 GB (give or take) and now it is well over 22 on my harddrive. It is likely we will still have to download something around launch but that will probably be available from the 20th as the usual patch day. When GW2 launched they used headstart to reduce the download requirement on launch day and from what I remember there weren’t that many issues. Their biggest problem back then were bugged skillpoints and events etc.
If you go into the game right now and look at the Verdant Brinks area, even though it’s still uncovered you can see map markers for the Pack Outposts. So at minimum that map is already in our computers.
ANet may give it to you.
Games have been shifting towards torrent based for sometime now to alleviate strain on the servers. It also seems, as others have mentioned, that they have been upping recent patches to include HoT content that will be activated on release date. However the servers will be running like crap for a few days post release, which should be expected.
You hadn’t noticed large patch sizes with no corresponding increase in playable content?
