With the expansion, many new and returning players will be logging in.

Just wondering how the game will welcome them? I logged in recently with my L60 Warrior and quite frankly it was all a bit overwhelming.

This could be quite a barrier to entry!

It would be true with any MMO. Things change. Stuff happens. What Anet did was make an MMO where the gear you left with will still likely allow you to play the game. Okay if you’re 60, you never had max gear, but players who made it to 80, they don’t have to run out and get new gear to play the content already there, and that’s already tons more than most MMOs will do for you.

What did you want Anet to do for you?

Expansion is for old Vets. New players have to go all Vanilla content before getting to expansion (pos 80 stuff).
After calling new players “incapable of recognizing simple patterns”(for lack of better words) with the New Player Experience, how much more spoon feed you need? Oo

I’ve convinced some of my friends to return and log in again. When they saw they had to spend 1400 gems to catch up with Living Story, they just logged off and said they would probably never log in again…..
Probably not the best way to welcome a returning player…. And not the best way to convince them to buy an expansion pack….

If they just want to catch up with the story and you have it unlocked why not take them through? Also you can convert gold to gems. Earning gold gradually they can unlock each chapter as they get enough money. Currently the gem conversion is sitting at around 29 gold for 200 gems. 29 gold isn’t too hard to get hold of.

AdaephonDelat,I’d disagree there,I think a lot of people find 29g to be quite a summ, and that for just one episode and his friends need like 7,I can’t see how that much gold can be earned easily, unless, you have a secret you’d be willing to share?

MMOs are not Tetris, they change and evolve. Obviously people knew about it when they bought an MMO, right?

Personally if I need cash I either run a few dungeons, hit world bosses or hit Silverwastes. Sometimes a combination of all 3. I’m not saying that the 29 gold will happen instantly but if they’re patient enough for like 2 or 3 days they’ll get the money.

Why wouldn’t you just run them through the Living Story for free? I assume you’ve unlocked them all. We host living story sessions for guild members that don’t have them unlocked. We go through them all in order. I’m surprised you simply let them quit rather than even suggest this.

Er, what? You get maybe 2-3g per hour in SW, but never 30.

Yeah I see what you mean,I think it could be a bit offputting for returners/newcomers.If I had to spend gold on gems I’d be much appealed to buy some of the armor skins or other vanity items instead of an episode, but I guess that’s just me.

Yeah I can understand that which is also why I (and Draknar) suggested that he take them through if they only want the story. The only reason to unlock the episodes is if they want any special rewards such as the carapace armour or they want to craft Mawdrey. But honestly if you’re not willing to earn some cash to unlock the episodes for Mawdrey chances are you’re not going to be bothered to do all the stuff needed to craft Mawdrey.

Either you are doing it wrong or you sell nothing and just look at the gold you gain directly. Because you can do between 20 to 30 gold without much problem. Of course if you complete the map from 0% to 100%, do the breach and the vinewrath and nothing else you won’t earn much. The breach, Vinewrath, Labyrinth and Chest farm are the most profitable in SW, try to stick with those.

^^ He’s right. You aren’t farming SW properly if you are only getting 2-3g/hr. I average 12-15/hr, but I don’t claim to be ultra efficient at it.

Xierg: Welcome back! It is natural to feel disoriented after a longish absence. I am always delighted to answer questions (except about builds). If I am on just whisper me.

The Silverwastes Experts: Please, teach me! I was happy to make about 5 gold an evening there and you make multiple times that in a hour. I need instruction.

30 gold per hour in SW is probably unreachable even if you only run around collecting chests with an infinite supply of keys. It’s around 150-180 chests per hour of chest train and the expected payout per chest is averaging to 15 silver or so from my experience. And while I do have only 180% account MF, most returning players will have like 80% mf.

And factor in the less efficient parts of the farming rotation like doing the events to gather crests and you are looking at 15 gold per hour realistic pay off in SW, which is still better than most places and not as mind numbingly boring as FS champ trains and the like.

But in the end QuickBen.3890 has a point, unless you are going for exclusive and somewhat hard to obtain rewards from LS, you don’t need to buy the episodes. And if you do, you will have to drop enough gold and effort for those 150 gold to unlock the episodes to not matter whatsoever.

How much chest farm will give you?

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2lt69q/farming_2000_chests_my_average_loot_and_some_tips/

Here it’s 400 gold from 2000 chests for around 20 silver per chest

Here it’s 309 gold from 1750 champion bags for around 17.6 silver per chest (The gold per hour is irrelevant here it was more of a silverwaste complete farm and not only chest farm. It still give you an idea of silver per chest)

Here it’s 585 gold from 4000 champion bags on a level 52 for around 14.6 silver per chest. (Here its only about the champion bags and do not include loots from the chest themselves. He use a level 52 to gain more low level loot to salvage low level scrap, don’t think its the best approach overall).

17-18 silver is probably the best bet for the amount of gold per chest you can get. That mean between 25 and 32 gold per hours. That’s by selling everything, which I never do. I usually keep most of the stuff that I gain because that’s what i usually need to craft skins and legendaries. Even if you don’t need most of the stuff, you can skill do more gain in gold by using the mystic forge or crafting with the loot you gain and then sell the result.

From my experience it’s closer to 15 per, but 17-18 is probably true for higher values of MF than I have (but then again, most players in question are likely to have less MF than I do, so you would probably have to adjust).

25 gold per hour is only per hour of chest farming, but you cannot sustain that indefinitely as you need to farm crests as well, and that is time spent far less efficient. Considering random rewards and whatnot, and considering you go through the entire Vinewrath event in 1 hour, it nets you ~40-50 champ bags and ~15-20 greens bags plus some random resource drops on top of ~30-40 blues/greens, and that’s like 6-8 gold farmed excluding bandit crests you earn for the second phase, aka chest runs.

And considering you earn like…400? Bandit crests per hour of doing events, you need to spend at least twice as much time farming crests as you do opening chests, so it’s more like 40 gold per 3 hours you farm in total, and you can sustain at that pace indefinitely.

You gain more bandits chest from a run of bandit chest than it cost you to buy keys. (you just have to tag event as you pass by). You can run a chest farm definitively. The limiting factor is shovel, but most farming group will retake fort and defend them when its less than a minute when they come by. That way you waste almost no time and the zerg can gain more shovel.

Also if you can find map almost at breach its even more profitable. The breach+vinewrath+labyrinth will give you even more loots. The problem is that you can’t find map at breach as easy as you can find a chest farm map and you when its done once, you need to find another map. But while chest farming I’m always looking for breach map and go on them when I can. I do the breach+vinewarth+labyrinth and keep my nightmare key until I find a tier 3 labyrinth to spend my key (tier 3 give you better loots).
