I HATE Heart Quests
True fact: Originally there were no Heart quests. Anywhere. They added them because playtesters were too used to another MMO that starts with W and couldn’t figure out what to do for EXP. At launch people were STILL having problems figuring it out until the community bashed it into their heads.
While I understand why they added heart quests (which was mentioned by the devs to be a way to help players who are use to quest hubs in other mmos integrate into GW2) I also hate heart quests reasons being…
-They take longer than most DE’s to complete, sometimes an annoyingly long repetitive objective.
-Most heart quests you actually fight for resources against other players.
With the first reason you could argue that there are multiple ways to complete a heart quest but the objective that fills the bar the most is often the most tedious and the easier objectives, usually the ones that don’t require you to kill anything fill only a sliver at times.
TL:DR
I don’t like them either but you only have to do them once.
MMO gamer’s today are too used to following a map with a big flashing symbol on it telling them “YOU NEED TO GO HERE”.
I can’t wait until they make an MMO without a map, no waypoints, no mounts and you walk into a cave and it’s pitch black. You don’t have a torch either.
I doubt they will ever take away a map from a game since even in real life people just don’t venture into the unknown without some idea of where they are going. Everything else you mentioned Calae sounds like Elder Scrolls Online. (though I suppose they’d have mounts as well)

Keep waiting, no one will buy it, or so few will be interested, and they’ll scrap the project.
It is true now today that people are way too used to “Goto the giant green dot on your map”. But what point is there to playing a game where you can do absolutely anything you want, but you’re not being told to kill 10 goblins. Are you still going to kill 10 goblins? Yes, yes you are, now which sounds more exciting, being rewarded for killing 10 goblins, or just killing 10 goblins on your own without being told to do so, nor being rewarded?
People who complain about games and quests, have no sense as to what is more exciting for the “Majority” of players. You can argue this if you’d like, however, you can’t prove to me, that a game with nothing to do could make millions. Almost every game out there has something to do, or some type of objective to reach, because game designers naturally, have played games, and do play games themselves, and would probably feel bored without any type of objective. Even the simplest of all games i.e; First Person shooters, have an objective “Kill The Opposing Team”.
Of course, if you’re looking for a game with no rewards, a little bit of exploration, no quests, absolutely nothing to do. I suggest checking out Wakfu, entertaining game no doubt (as I am a fan of strategy, and tactics games), but I find it incredibly dull, and boring, just going out on my own, for my own sake, and either endlessly killing things, or crafting. Go play Wakfu, come back, and you tell me which one is more fun, Guild Wars 2, or Wakfu.

Only Better…
If I don’t feel like doing hearts, I don’t do hearts. When I do, I do. If you approach this as ‘must grind X things’ it’s no wonder you hate it. Play what you feel will be fun to actually play instead of forcing yourself to do something you don’t like.

What surprises me though. I’m the type of person that usually doesn’t have a problem with the basic “kill 10 rats” sort of quests. Sometimes I actually sort of enjoyed just sitting down, having my list of 10-15 quests and just get em all done in an efficient manner.
But hearts…. I don’t know I just can’t do it, they drive me nuts lol.
i don’t mind them at all. most can be finished in about 2 minutes. granted there’s a few that take way too long ( the one where you paint frogs blue comes to mind) or are extremely repetitive ( catch the barrels of ale which is impossible or rouse 60 drunken patrons) but overall i enjoy them. some of them are fun and original ( take food back from rabbits).
I agree with the events being way cooler than the heart quests. I think we need things like points of interest and vistas to encourage us to travel to the far corners of the map, but when there is a choice between kill 20 rats and help these guys set up mortars to assault this tower, the second one will always win.
Its possible the dynamic events seem more interesting is because they are allowed to have a concrete beginning middle and end, and connect with past and future events. While heart quests are static and have to always be able to be completed.
That said, some of them are interesting, like drinking beer and passing out and stuff. But they could just make that something you can just interact with and get some experience from (the first time of course, not repeatable). Would also kind of give some rewards to roleplaying. Reading lore and interacting with the world giving small bits of completion or experience actually sounds pretty fun. I have gone off on a horrible tangent, sorry!

I think they could’ve made them more like mini-games or something that could’ve made them alot more fun to do, especially if they actually had unique rewards. Like that one quest in the norn starting area where you have to dodge the rabbits.
Sylvari versus Risen has some great Plant vs. Zombie potential. =p
Or a Sylvari Plant Turret Tower Defense mini game, etc.
Most hearts are just a boring grind.

sylvari vs rien is used about 2 dozen times in the game….

I think that’s called Second Life…
so, take out hearts and what…? Make of Guild wars 2, Lineage 2? kitten grinding forever?
I like helping the city to maintain the centaurs out of cities, i like to go stealth through a camp full of stealth seekers, i like to help someone to do something…
Its the concept of submerging you into the game. If you just say “oh, i could be doing something else to get exp faster”, you are just meta-gaming this game. Like playing D&D with numbers and figurines and skipping the role part. Complete waste, and yourself complaining how the game lacks of things that you are just not wanting to see.
I must be in the minority. I love them. Some of them are quite hilarious like the bunnies knocking feed out of your arms. Something do do as I cruise leveling up hunting events and mats. I’m a farmer at heart so things like that appeal to me.
@Calae that would be fun back to the old make your own map! It could add in a true feeling of randomness like D2 where each time you would get a new map lay out (sadly they lost that in D3) but i could see this in dunges to keep ppl from “speed” running them and messing up loot for every one else.

The hearts are my least favorite pve component, too. But I do ’em for the map completion, and sometimes for the karma vendor. They tend to feel like chores (a lot of them literally are chores).
Some of them can just take too long…that’s the only time I really get bored of doing them.
