I buy HOT and 2 days later its 50% off. I have the worse luck with this game. Arenanet hates me.

In some instances they will refund you the difference. Contact support and ask politely if this is something that could be done. But it may depend on whether you bought it from their site, or from somewhere else.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Yeah submit a ticket and see if they’ll offer you the difference as a refund. I would suggest though that you stay calm if you want the result, rather than say you’re kittened off! This sort of thing can happen in almost any purchase in retail – whether it’s an online game, a pair of shoes or a fridge. Something has to go on sale and it has to go on sale at some date. There’s always a day before a sale it’s full price. ArenaNet doesn’t hate you!

As long as you didn’t buy the ultimate edition, you should get a refund for the difference.

As long as you purchased directly from ArenaNet. Otherwise, you would need to speak to the retailer you purchased from.

Good luck.

If you didn’t buy it directly from Anet contact the retailer you got it from and see if they can refund you.

(Bear in mind the sale only applies to Anet’s website, so other retailers might still be selling it at full price. Which means you might have to get it refunded by them and then buy it from Anet.)

Does this reply not highlight a massive issue, the fact that someone posted on the official forums and the Dev directed them to reddit, why does it seem that we are being directed to reddit more and more.

Edit
Wrote this when going to bed and see now it may be taken negativly.

I know devs posting on reddit instead of putting everything here first is a sore point, but in this case I don’t see the problem.

It looks like the issue of refunds was raised there first – and got a response from Anet’s Customer Service lead. That on it’s own makes sense – they responded on the site where the question was asked.

Then Jon Olson responded here when the question was asked here. But according to his forum title he’s a programmer, not a member of the customer service team. Contrary to popular belief video game companies are not a linear system with the people who make the game at the top and everyone else as ‘support staff’. Which means although he knows the answer Jon may not have the authority to make that decision himself (just like Gaile has to tell people to contact Support instead of saying she will sort their issues out herself), so he linked to a publicly available source from the relevant authority to back up his statement.

In other words it’s more like an external link to a source on a Wiki than sending someone to reddit to find the answer.

You think that’s bad? I bought the base game and now they give that way for free.

I’ve got a paid account (with HoT) and a free account and even without the expansion I think buying the base game was well worth it.

There are so many restrictions on free accounts. The worst for me are having just 2 character slots and being unable to use map chat. But you also basically can’t use the TP for anything but basics, can’t use guild banks, can’t enter WvW until you’re level 60, can’t use the gold to gems exchange and a bunch of other stuff.

It’s a good way to try out the game if you want to see what the gameplay is like before buying, but there’s no way I could play like that long-term.

I agree with Danikat, I created a free account to see what it was like. The only thing I could use it for was to sell basic materials (no processed wood, leather etc.) and then buy something with the gold to put in my guild hall. If I had no guild hall all of that stuff would be worthless and the gold unusable.
