I can't decide on a main, please help!
Elementalist has some good range set-ups. Every class can be ranged, but some are better, here is my list with some loose order of range strength:
-Ranger
-Elementalist
-DH
-Necromancer
-Mesmer
-Engineer
-Revenant
-Warrior
-Thief
They all work though. Again, the order is loose. (Top to bottom)
Try them all out in pvp with some range builds (just practice against chieftain and svanir) You’ll know fairly quickly which professions offer fun range builds for you.

I tried Ele, but the reason I find them difficult is they’re not great at melee. I need great range, but I also need a strong Melee ability (both offensive and defensive), as well as some kind of element of party support. That’s why I’m now leaning towards Rev…
A character that’s required in dungeons, fun in PvE, and a great strategist in sPvP
You’re in a bit of a bind there since there is no class ‘fits-all’ to that.
But i’d go with ranger/druid. Reasons :
- ranged and has a pet
- can melee : GS – axe – warhorn – …etc
- can support : druid with staff is petty awesome
- can do dungeons : melee + spotter as trait for increased dmg , sword for skipping
- can do PvP (but not so great at it atm it seems)
I have a druid with staff/LB , pure zerk, and HoT is, although more challenging, lots of fun on that character. Although my mesmer is way better in survivability (shatter condi, 2.4K condi dmg) and soloing.
Assuming you have to have a main. Why not use your mes as your main for most situations, while having another main for everything else?
I personally enjoy mes quite a bit in pve, though due to the current state of pvp Mesmer, I don’t run her in pvp anymore, I don’t want to run PU/condi or similar, and it seems those are the only viable pvp builds (I could be wrong, haven’t really pvped with my mes since I got all her pvp achieves done)
Ranger is nice, and now with druid has a bit more utility, and pve content is quite easy with a ranger.
I run my ranger with LB/GS druid, primarily zerk with a little bit of soldiers.
All in all, follow your heart, but don’t limit yourself to one class.
As for ele, my “main”, hard to swap between max range and melee capability due to no weap swap. But, elems are amazing in melee range is you so choose to, and have impressive range, only 2nd to ranger I believe, staff still being top or close to top dps in the game.

What you have just stepped into is called the engi syndrome (where engi is the class for you but you don’t know it yet) welcome to the engi club my Friend where all your dreams come true!:D
So all in all you want a character who is good at range, but versatile enough to be good at PvP and PvE.
Dragon hunter:
They will always be wanted in PvE content.
Average range with longbow and scepter.
Incredibly strong melee tank capability.
Great in PvP as a bunker it burn/meditation guardian.
Mesmer:
Will always be wanted in dungeons.
Strong range with utility and greatsword.
Very slippery in melee combat
Great solo character with phantasm builds.
Good WvW character, decent PvP.
Ranger, engineer, elementalists are good at range but aren’t the best at melee.
Warrior, necromancer and thief are garbage range. And revenant I haven’t played enough to form an opinion.
