I'd like dye on our backpacks!

hmm … black sheep backpack
… What a cruel title. Give hope and destroy it in the first sentence.
Misleading title is misleading.
I believe it’s been stated somewhere in a red post (I could be wrong) that this wish will not come to fruition anywhere in the near future, if at all.
So long Treeface.
“…Kormir? I know not of whom you speak.”

Indeed. If it does ever happen it won’t be anytime soon. It will require a minimum of two things. One minor one is, adding dye slots on the U.I. The big problem is, going back and redesigning all the backpacks in the game to add at least one dye channel to them. That would undoubtably be hours of work and until the expansion is released and for a period of time after that, they won’t have spare manpower for changes like this.
ANet may give it to you.

Yep. And then there’s the issue of backpieces that have different colour variants in game already. Allowing to dye one of these to match the variant would annoy a lot of people who went out of their way to buy/make the variants.
For example, the spinal blades backpieces and the feathered wings.
I can see a workaround for the spinal blades backpieces- the metal gets dyed rather than the light-up part. The feathered wings though… somebody could just buy the white ones, dye it abyss and call it a day.
Gem store backpack items should be dye-able tbh..
The white wings should’ve been the only set of wing released and people should’ve been allowed to color them to match their sets.
I hope they take this approach with those butterfly wings!!
ANet devs have said they made a design decision long before the game was much more than a glean in their collective eye that players would not be able to dye weapons (and likewise back items). Some sort of technical issues combined with labor costs made it seem like the best move for the game, at least at that time and perhaps even today.
I still think people should keep requesting it. However, I’d hate for anyone to get discouraged when they don’t see ANet even stop to consider it.
while this would be a neat feature, it would break the current back piece system in many ways.
example: no incentive to craft the three higher spinal blades. get one and you are done.
There are multiple ways to accommodate this problem. Don’t make all backpacks dye-able. Things like the Quaggan and Charr plush backpacks shouldn’t be dye-able. It would be silly. Just so long as they state on the item that the skin can’t be dyed it should be fine. For other things, not everything on it needs to be able to be dyed, just some.
There are a lot of back items that should be able to be dyed, though. There are other items that shouldn’t have ever been made because they should have just been dyed to become the other variant.
I like the suggestion for the spinal blade that they glow would not change, but the metal would. I think that’s a fair compromise. Just like the Toucan on the Zephyrite item shouldn’t change color, but that doesn’t mean the bags and boxes couldn’t. There are simply too many items that would work so well with a character if they were a different color, but for which there is no way to change that color.

Why would they let you dye backpacks when they can sell you recolored versions of the same thing over and over?

why would you think so badly of others?

No idea what technical limitation (if any) there is that prevents players from applying dyes to glows (can’t recolor flames on Hellfire, Flame Legion, or any of the fire-themed gem store skins, nor the glow of Radiant skins), but it sure didn’t stop ANet from charging us 500 gems for identical models with palette swaps.
