I love my alts. I can farm world events/dragons like crazy.

Somewhere else somebody posted they had 9 level 80s. They park one at each world event/dragon

Since it doesn’t cost anything to leave the alts as they are and simply not play them, I don’t understand the point in going out of your way to delete them, unless it was just for shock value for the thread title.

Or am I missing some hidden benefit?

I’ll start out by saying not everyone will be like me, but I played GW1 pretty steadily for almost 7 years. Not hours a day 365 days a year, but at least 2-3 hours a week with 1 month being the longest break I took.

If I end up doing the same here even if I only did 2 daily per week and got the monthly, after 3-4 years I would have earned nearly 1000 laurels. Could probably outfit a few alts by that point.

I need to be able to dodge and leave a clone behind at work/home.

Maybe in 6+ years time they will be worth something again but at the moment there is no way of knowing that, infact my guess is they will be soulbound.

I just want to share that the current state of the game highly discourages alt play, as I currently estimate it will take the better half of 2013 to finish gearing my main.

I don’t play enough to warrant joining a large guild, so the only path to much of the ascended gear is via the laurel system (why should I benefit from the work of people who play daily several hours when I only play guildwars at most an hour a day?).

Even if I could find time to level my alts (when I log in, I end up using all my time on daily and monthly activity) once they are max level, it would take another half a year to gear them.

Just wanted to get that off my chest, thanks.

Sorry, but this is ridiculous. I have 11 characters and NO MAIN. Not one of those characters is fully geared in exotics and only one of them has an ascended piece. That would be my usual farmer, who acquired her medallion with laurels, just so I could maximize her magic find. Oh, and for what it’s worth, I’ve been playing since BWE1, so I’m anything but new to the game.

The painful (to you, I’m guessing) truth is that you don’t need a fully kitted out toon to do anything in this game. The fact that you feel that this is what defines your sense of fulfillment, tells me you shouldn’t be playing alts to begin with. You clearly don’t enjoy the game enough to handle them.

Enjoy your little tantrum.

I guess you don’t like being as effective as you can be playing things like WvW where every little bit counts?

I do. So, I understand the OP. I can’t even begin to dedicate myself to going through the grind of leveling and equipping an alt. It is almost pointless.

I’d like to say “Nice try”, but I’m trying to be more truthful these days. Fractals have agony starting at level 10. Someone may wish to confirm, but I’m pretty sure there are those that do fine up to near 30 without agony resist. You can dodge most of the agony applicators at these levels if you’re paying attention.

Nope, it’s just the same ones at greater difficulty. The only point of doing the more difficult ones is to grind better gear. And yes, this pretty much makes using higher level fractals as an example of why gear grind requirements are bad invalid since that is the only reason the higher levels exist.

I finally got my ascended amulet two days ago. Put it on, checked stats — made sad face. Barely any noticeable difference at all from my level 80 (I think it was only masterwork even!) amulet. I understand that you need the AR to survive upper level fractals, which I have no intention of ever doing. Other than that, I can assure you that you can do anything in this game without ascended gear.

Will I keep doing dailies to get my infusions and ascended rings? Will I keep murdering zombies in Orr to get more gold even though there’s nothing new and exciting to buy with it? Yep, I will, because that’s fun for me. I don’t think this game can be everything to everyone. I’m truly sorry it’s not fun for you.

Side Note: There are certainly some things they could fix to make it better — eg. dungeon group finder!!! I hate that I can’t do some of the fun stuff because I don’t have any friends who play this.

That is disappointing from you mate – you’ve always struck me as a more “half-full, but with something rancid” type of player…

Back on topic though – some players have built road blocks in their mind, I can’t convince them otherwise nor am inclined to as they don’t make fun party members.

Try getting Ascended through these time sinks for 9 characters, then see how many road blocks you must wade through…is it possible probably in a few years, is it worth doing not really…

Surely everyone has their own style of play … and if you do not want to play with alternate characters, for time reasons or other reasons, you are perfectly free to delete

For a situation of travel/work unfortunately I do not play for two months in GW2 (near resume shortly ç_ç ), but logging in to my account , you can find my legendary guardian Ya Goo and 7 other characters to level 80 (all classes done with equipment exotic rings ascend … minimum) {in FOTM are all about lvl1 apart from the guardian who is almost lvl 50 with 30AR}

The reasons that led me to this situation are multiple:

initially to find the character that I enjoyed the most in the game …

of course, another reason was to have more of a choice depends on what I should do

and to make the game less boring

another aspect though of little relevance is to have plenty of space in the various inventories …

but the real reason is that I have very clear in my mind that learning how to use all the different characters would help me a lot in the time of having to deal with the various classes in PvP (which I believe to be the real end-game appearance)

However I seem to have realized that your real problem is not being able to equip your alternative with a set FOTM … so my question / advice .. is : Why you do not concentrate on FOTM with only one character and reserve the other for all other aspects of the game?!!?

Hocofaisan said he plays one hour a day.

I have four level 80s in exotic. I dont think I would have them if I could only invest an hour a day. And, now, with the dailies… who would have time to build a character?

I share Hocofaisan’s frustration about dailies because I personally like freedom. Every day when I log into GW2 now I get angry because I feel as though I am being manipulated. After doing the dailies I am too angry about playing the developers game instead of my own game, the way I would choose it, that I leave and play TERA. That is also where I spend my real money now.

Thank you SneakyErvin for answering my question, to myself, of why I even play GW2 anymore at all…. Yes, I have hopes the future will bring me back.

People like hocofaisan, casual players, are very important to the success of the game, given its structure. As a new player and as a player of alts, I have often depended on the kindness of strangers to get me through a boss or event. Without them the game becomes a closed system and only alts will play the low areas. Maybe the guilds will keep us going in that case, instead of new and casual players… I hope we have lots of real coin to keep the shop open.

Nobody runs 1-10 because they want the rewards, understandably, and the Agony doesn’t start happening until 11+

I have 7 characters. One of them is level 79.7. A couple more are above 70 and another high 60s.

Alts make dailies easier. They let you cover all the crafting bases (though they compete for resources unless you keep their crafting levels spread out). They give you some use for those 150 transmutation whatsits in your bank. They let you experience more of the game and better understand how other classes work and can be countered.

Because a player can competently participate in any aspect of this game without a single piece of Ascended gear, the only grind in this game is a self-imposed one. It really is that simple. It really is.

Can I do the uber challenging fractal level 50 without ascended gear? nope.

If you unlocked lvl 50 fractal you have ascended gear already for you and 40 alts.
If you didn’t, you don’t have enough skill/experience to do it anyways.

Awesome how accessing high fractals forces you to have some experience with lower ones, that way I’m sure I don’t get rookies who want to “do uber challenging frac 50” without having the skill for it.

It’s sad that this game revolves completely around dailies.

I miss them constantly because, well, I have a life and am not always home.

WoW fixed this by letting us receive a maximum of a weeks worth of dailies (dungeon reward) so I could run 7 dungeons in 1 day and get all of the rewards instead of having to do it every. single. day. If I miss a few days, I could still catch up and don’t get left behind without those rewards.

Idk why ANet is still using such an ancient system, but it’s not fair to the players.. never has been. Only people who are on every day can keep up. Plus, daily should not be acc bound… obviously.

Totally not alt-friendly.

This x10000.. -_- They should find a way to satisfy the hardcore players to be able to get BiS in stats equipments via the method they want (grinding) without being limited but also provide casuals not to get left behind in acquiring the same things too. The game used to be so much better with just exotics and the multitude of ways we could acquire them.

Ultimately, people want to get their BiS stat equipments so that they can focus on the things that really matter: cute outfits for their characters and shinies without having to force themselves to do content that they don’t want because it’s the only way to acquire these ascended. Very suffocating.

I think the problem is that gearing all of your alts with the BiS equips is just insanely ridiculous. Why are ascended items so ‘grindy’ to acquire? At least with exotics, you can use 1 character to farm for your alts as well. With laurels and guild commendations that are very limiting being introduced, having alts wear the same equips as your main become tedious.

If you’ve cleared 1-29 Fractals without Ascended gear then you’ve proved my point.

And if the only point in doing Fractals is to grind gear, then why are you complaining about having to grind gear? You’re complaining that you have to grind in order to grind. You’re choosing to run a marathon, and then complaining that you’ll have exercise to get into good enough shape to run the marathon.

I have 3 toons (hate the term alt, as having a min is useless, every toon usage is purely situational), all with 3 Exotic armor and weapon sets each, and only play like 10 hours a week, roughly 1.5 hours a day. Couldn’t care less about ascended rings but if I wanted a couple I would have them already too.
