I died to a guardian who wasn't attacking me
Don’t attack people with retaliation.
^ with multi-hitting attacks.
I just died in Torchlight II, I guess that’s pretty bad game design right there.
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”
Lucky you weren’t around back when Retal wasn’t nerfed in WvW :P

I really wish I was that guardian, cause I would have had to ask why he was hitting him self. As I watched his health bar drain.

falls out of chair laughing
I think the more serious question is… why did you keep hitting him when you probably were spending roughly 5-10 seconds to watch your health bar draining out.
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".
Know that it has been fun and I love ya all.
It is pretty hard for a Guardian to get more than 424 damage out of reflection (198.45 + 0.075 * Power) @ 3000 power is roughly 424. If you have 15,000 health, that means you stood there and hit him 35 times without managing to kill him and in the process killing yourself.
Guardians don’t have availability to confuse so that shouldn’t have been an issue.
Other possibilities? Was he setting you on fire too?
Naked level 80’s can beat up level 21’s, so….I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
I used to play a game called Shadowbane that had a mechanic similar to retaliation on their Barbarian class. I made a high con Minotaur Barbwho had ridiculous amounts of health, and just left him out in dangerous places with that skill running constantly (with the help of a key macro). I would come back a couple hours later to find tons of dead rogue based characters around him =D
It was WVW, and I realize I am only level 21, but with the boosted stats there should be no reason I am dying from using attacking him. To me thats pretty bad game design
hehe, funny story, tnx for laughs ^^

I remember my Assassin in Diablo 2, who was phoenix strike and did the most insane dmg imaginable, being banned from the end of Act 4 due to Iron Maiden curse instakilling me with dmg reflect from 1 auto attack.
I guess it could be worse. :o
To complete the trifecta, you need to die from an elementalist who never once targeted you and an engineer who isn’t even there (yay turrets).
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

People use turrets?
Against up-leveled 21s? Sure .

I died irl right before I posted this..

Dark Covenant (SBI)
Both DAoC and WoW had a similar mechanic. Loved being out with a pally and watching some rogue pop out of stealth going stabbity stabbity stab stab ipwnj00 ….splat! And of course the faster they swung, the faster they died.
They don’t even watch their own health bars or what?
Love that mechanic.
Oh my, even with the best retal available, it still had to take a while. You did try to heal yourself when your hps started to go down, right?
(though i don’t get why you didn’t even try to disengage – you had to have enough time to do just that).

You must have been using a Flamethrower, Arc Lightning, etc. Those skills trigger Retaliation multiple times a second. Firing at a group who all have retaliation will kill you in less than a second.
this is the funniest thread this week. All I can think of is “Stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself” brings back memories from when I was a kid =D
Ye haha i can just imagine it, going up to like a group, starting that flamethrower and seeing your health drop

I once did a (double) aoe retal mesmer build and a necro in deathshroud used his aoe lifetap skill and died instantly.
5 players x 2 retaliation each x 9 tics from life tap = 90 tics of retaliation x 300 = 27,000 dmg
That’s still 14,500 dmg even with just 1 regular aoe retaliation, it’s a really broken mechanic, it needs to have a 1 second ICD and buff the dmg a little.
So much fail

Actually with a flamethrower and retaliation you can kill yourself faster than it takes to detarget the enemy or even removing the kit, its like one flamethrower gush and dead.
Completely broken mechanic retaliation. Its a huge reason Flamethrower is totally unusable as a kit.

kitten I miss shadowbane, its a pity so many interesting and unique ideas turned out so poorly =/
Ranger longbow #2 (rapid fire) will kill yourself if you use it on an enemy with retaliation. Every time that arrow comes back and hits you, you get hit with vulnerability, so every attack hits progressively harder and harder until you’re dead. Fun stuff.
I keep hitting the mines in Minesweeper. Very bad game design!

You can also turn away and deselect to stop it

Retaliation != Reflection
now some good GW1 memory surfaces.
When managing to cast Pain Inverter on an Ele or Dervish foe right before they use an AoE attack succesfully on your entire party, and insta kill themselves. :-)
lol you are strong.

Retaliation does not turn back arrows. You were likely thinking about reflection. Retaliation will not kill you on longbow #2, which you can easily test at veteran karkas.

So how much damage does “reflection”? I don’t think it will reflect the whole damage. Would be pretty imba if you did a critical hit and have high dps build and got all of that completely reflected.

No it does not work this way but in theory it should, sort of. It’s small amounts of damage based on the defenders power I think. basically if you do a lot of fast attacks against the defender with retaliation you can seriously hurt yourself to the point of killing yourself if not careful.
It’s great vs berserker fast attack foes such as thieves. :P
PS, you did mean retaliation right and not reflection? Because that’s different…

I don’t pvp but even I would have realized that retaliation was on on him due to the chimes per hit and the large popup numbers telling you that you’re hitting yourself.
If you pve don’t go to southsun cove you’ll be dying from those lizard things that’s for sure.

Oh they are evil Drakes they are, very, very, very evil!

Reflection does exactly as the name implies – it reflects the attack back with the same strength and additional effects tied to it. Retaliation works differently – it deals back a set amount of damage per attack, depending on the Retal-buffed target’s power score. Additionally, while reflection turns the original attack back (and thus the target suffers no damage), retaliation does not in any way stop the attack itself – it just punishes the attacker.

That’s not retaliation, actually – one of their attacks puts many stacks of confuse on you.

Yes, I know. I got confused with retaliation and reflection though. Either way, they both hurt.

Reflection tends to be easier to spot (giant shimmering shields and such with your own attacks flying back in your face) where as retaliation is just a condition/numbers thing. Retaliation being the much more common effect.
^Retaliation is also much deadlier than reflection when it comes to weak multihit attacks.
