I don't get it.
The core game is provided free with HoT to new customers/accounts. It is intended to attract new business.
Somebody else posted the same thing a little bit ago on the forums but they got trolled and the post got locked. I think most of these people don’t know how to read or are rabid fan boys.
They were referring to the type of expansion, not the pay model. The Canthan expansion and the Elonian expansion were stand alone games. You could buy one without buying the core game and your character would begin on the other continent, leveling as normal but unable to go to the starting continent of the core game. Eye of the north, like the GW2 expansion are max level content, and will have a story that follows the ending of the core story, rather than a standalone story like the 2 aforementioned GW campaigns.
No, I think what they mean is when they did refer to the pay model. From the old FAQ:
“Q: Do I have to own Guild Wars 2 to play the expansion? A: Yes. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is an expansion to Guild Wars 2 and not a stand-alone campaign, and therefore it requires the base game to play.”
Yeah thats what i meant. That community address says one thing at the top and on the bottom is says another. Like they don’t want to admit to changing their business model after announcing hot.
After reading the address it’s hard for me not to feel like after they released the hot announcement that they put the base game on sale to lure people into buying it, fully well knowing that they were going to give the base game away free anyway. Once the internet exploded about it they went back on their decision, which i’m sure they’ll still have made out on.
If they didn’t plan on on charging people for the base game from the start they should publicly admit that, because it’s makes them looked crooked as all hell otherwise.
WOW, finally some people get it. After I wrote up
This post(textile isn’t working): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Contradiction-in-Community-Address
I had almost lost faith in the intelligence of this community.

Yeah, you might want to re-read the FAQ amd stop quoting the old FAQ.
Q: Is the expansion “buy to play”?
A: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is a paid expansion to Guild Wars 2, but once you buy it, there are no subscription fees. This means that you can continue playing and access future updates for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns with no subscription fee.

I think some people are looking to have their menial existence on the forums meaningful, since the s-storm has been pacified. And with their egos and existence now on the line, they’ll scrutinze over anything to keep the flame going.
Simply quoting the new faq would be missing the point entirely. Also, my ego and existence on the line? I hardly use this forum and from the complacent attitude of certain vocal people on here It’s hard to care what they think.

Slight exaggeration on using the forum. Quoting the old faq does very little in furthering in one’s attempt in creating a point when it has been revoked. Feelings mutal, very hard to care when it comes to certain angsty vocal people on here and what they think.
No change in the business model. GW1 was buy to play. The expansion and two campaigns were also buy to play. GW2 remains buy to play and its expansion is as well. There are no subscription fees.
The only change to the business model is a fancier cash shop and the sequel to the personal story, the Living Story is free only if you’re online during each chapter’s release (otherwise, it, too, is pay once, play forever).
