Hi there,

since another thread was closed I’d like to continue the discussion with more perspective.

First of all for me the only three characters without problems in this game are Rytlock, Forgal and Canach but in this thread I’d like to focus on DE2.0.

Braham is a character I’ve met first from the current party. The first impression was confusing. I knew he was a norn but his voice, accent and looks made me think of him as jamaican gangsta from GTA IV. The more time I spent with him I felt like he’s a mindless buiser bashing monster around him without any insight or context. For me Braham is a Schwarzenegger’s Conan of GW2:
- Braham go kill stuff!
- Braham smash!
What’s more I find his relationship with Eir totally not convincing. She’s a legend and his mother but their interraction with each other is lacking and emotionless.

Braham’s final score: 3/5

With empty head norn another character was introduced. Auntie Rox is what I call her. It’s another wannabe hero in this universe I simply can’t stand. First one was Tybalt but she’s even worse. She looks like a grandpa from children tales waiting to be eaten by wolf. She acts… well… Did she accomplish anything in the story? Because what I remember about her is pew pew with bow and pet plush devourer. This is why I call her Auntie. She does nothing and her pet is immersion breaking for me.

Auntie’s final score: 1/5

Taimi I must admit is quite good. She’s not a hero, she’s a kid with exceptional IQ. She’s also an asura with attitude competing only Zojja I think. I wish we could see them both interacting with each other in HoT. It would be like a cartoon character Brain arguing with himself. Still I don’t like her design. Her golem is a big cat which points me towards anime cartoons about stupid girls being heroes. Yeah, that’s a little crack but at least doesnt cause me to hate her.

Taimi’s final score: 4/5

I liked Marjory when we first met during Aetherblades attack on LA. The Ashford’s murder investigation wasn’t anything interesting mechanicaly but Marjory was introduced as cold professional with sarcastic attitude. Just like my rl fiancee. She also got a sexy concept art but in-game model is… meh. She would be a great side character for other heroes, helping with her intelligence e.g. deducing Scarlet’s future plans. Unfortunately she end up being another front line fighter.

Marjory’s final score: 3/5

When I look at Kasmeer I see a Barbie doll disconnected from real life pretending not to be dumb. There’s totally nothing more I can say about her. She’s a blond fairy casting butterflies around with sweet voice and 0 responsibility. For me she’s in pair with Auntie. She walks around, looks good and that’s it. Once she discovered krait tower. Wow. If player abilities could interact with terrain it would be awesome but in this case it was a cheap plot trick to explain why noone saw krait tower being built.

Kasmeer’s final score: 1/5

The last part I need to bring up is Marjory and Kasmeer’s romance. Holy Mother of God. How is it possible that you handled Caithe’s and Faolain’s romance so well, intimate and sexy and this one is…. ugh. While other characters act uninteresting at least they don’t feel forced. K&M look like a teenager drama to me. It’s not that bad when it happens between lines, like Logans and Jennahs affection but we have literally cutscenes focused on both of them interacting with each other, creating a drama unrelated to the story of the game.

Romance’s final score: 0/5

It’s not hard to tell english isnt my main language however I hope my thoughts are expressed clearly. I know there are other ppl around with similar thoughts about those characters. I hope after the feedback we will see an improvement from writers. Yeah… stupid me.

When Rox and Braham first joined, I was like “Why are these people following me?”

The first time I heard Braham call me “boss” I was like: “This is MY party? You’re fired.”

Tiami, Marjory and Kasmeer are ok, though Kasmeer could sometimes opt for non-seethrough clothes when we are heading into battle.

Would be really awesome if we could decide who we have in our party, since it’s all instanced now anyways. Pretty certain it’s not gonna happen though, since it would mean actually giving players meaningful choices.

They simply cant be all too awesome, otherwise we would have 5 new Trahearnes, which would steal us always the show xD

by the way, I absolutely see none of them as DE 2.0.
Why people keep on pulling always permanently this nonsensical DE2.0 out of their hats, when they talk about these NPC’s is way beyond me, most likely because alot of people would like to see them becoming DE 2.0 that they basically permanently call them that way???

If there would be ever something, like a recreation of Destiny’s Edge with our own Characters becoming its Leaders within the Game’s Story, I would personally definetely want completely other Characters to be part of it, than those few of Braham, Taimi, Marjory, Kasmeer and Rox…

They all have better things in their own lifes to do, than to be part of such a Guild.

Braham wants to become a Legend his Mother can be proud of, now that he self shows his proud to have a Mother, that is among the Norn a Legend. Becoming a Legend is nothing, what I see Braham becoming, when he is part of Destiny’s Edge.

Marjory is currently on on her personal Revenge Tour against Mordremoth and kasmeer supports her, cause she loves her and does anythign to help her find her peace and get revenge. But after Mordremoth, I see no further reason, why these 2 should join Destinys Edge instead of continuing their own lives and supportign us more or less for a while from the backline in a safe place like Destinys Reach doing there, what they both can do the best – investigating stuff on request.

Rox follows us only, because she wants to proof Rytlock, that she is worth it to become part of his Warband.. and somehow I also believe, shes in love with Rytlock, but yet hasn’t had the guts to tell him how she feels, cause of him being her leader and now that Rytlock is a Revenant.. dunno how and if this will continue between these two somehow. However, to me it looks like Rytlock has as a Revenant after his tour now completely new and different goals and sees hisself not anymore as a Charr Tribune he just was pre tour through the mists and ending up as revenant, that thinks about stuff like war bands ect.
I think Rox finds her way of life better somewhere under the rows of the Charr or with Braham, cause she likes him enough, that she hangs around with him and follows him where he goes, than to follow us around in Destinys Edge.
Her whole story and design is way too shallow, than it would make any sense to drag her around with us more in the future and I think, than needed.

Taimi is a kind of lone wolf, which just wants to surpass her master Zojja and is still an asuran child, which i can’t see beign part of a Guild like Destinys edge, when she belongs into here asuran college she is part of and should rather learn, where she can help us also more safely on request when neded for investigation or for some nice asura inventions ect. that could help us out…

However, to make it brief, I think it would be alot better to bring some fresh air of new characters to the game, once we defeated Mordremoth and made Tyria again a great chunk safer with that action, so that the current NPCs can follow again for a while their own lifes and we get to see a bunch of new more for DE2.0 fitting characters introduced, that bring in the fresh air.

Compare this like with the TV series LOST… after some seasons the tv producers brought with a folow up season a complete new bunch of characters to show us what happened around the showplace from a completely different angle of view, these characters brought a coplete new fresh air to the whole cast of characters that were already there and known.

I strongly believe, somethign like this is needed for GW2 too. When Mordremoth is gone, we had the current Characters then for 3 seadons in a row basically, if you see HoT as basically season 3 with some extra personal story attached to it …
A set of complete new Characters to form a new Destinys Edge and to begin as first act of that new guild for example to start with the build up of Lions Arch as location for their head quarter would be imo a good start for a season 4 that is for difference one alot more peaceful season, where all the prior seasons were just only permanently full of war and battles against someone/something.

After 3 seasons of combat, I think a 4th season thats more peacefully for a difference with a compelte set of new introduced characters around DE 2.0 would be awesome and refreshing.

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

Still I would say living story > your personal story after LA invasion.

ANET has done a great job in writing the characters of Destinies Edge A-Team, except for Eir, she needs something to flesh her out. Good character on the surface, but it is not obvious in game how she is beside strong, independent norn woman who need no man (except for once because Braham).

I am not a huge fan of Destinies Edge B team for many of the reasons listed above, but I have come to enjoy Rox, Braham, and Taimi. I personally love Rox because she seems one of the few competent and realistic thinkers of the group. Shes almost an apprentice of Rytlok and it shows. While she is not as single minded as Rytlok, she still brings some of his harsh attitude.

Braham, I did NOT like early in Season 2. He seemed like a idealistic dolt who was trying to hard. This has changed a bit as the season has progressed and I have liked where he has ended up as a character. He has been brought down a bit, and has become more confident in his own abilities and individuality.

Taimi I just enjoy. I do not know why I enjoy her, but shes an awesome, and spunky little Asura. I also had no idea her Golem/Suit had cat ears…

Marjory and Kasmeer can just….go do their thing in a whole, somewhere far from the plot. I dislike both intently. Their characters seem forced, and while Marjory is at least competent, she tries to play leader and it simply does not work. Kasmeer is obnoxiously air headed and is painfully, obviously eye candy.

Their romance is forced, and thrust into your face like, “Look! We are doing a gay relationship! Look at us! LOOK AT US!”

I really do not know the philosophy behind this. It seems almost like a separate writing team was set up for this, and as the OP said, the other relationships in the game were done VERY well. It was obvious but not shoved into your face. The players could draw the lines to fill in the blank areas, and while it was an obvious driving point for some of the characters, it did not hijack the story.

As for another character I see a lot of hate for online, Trahearne.

I love Trahearne personally. I think this was one of the best characters added to the story, definitely on par with Destinies Edge. The development of this character directly parallels and mirrors the player characters, and you can see him (and in extension the pact) growing and finding its feet in areas they are not comfortable with. He did not want to be a hero but he embraced it when he realized he had to be, he did not fight it or try to ignore it or be the fatalistic hero, that many games make the mistake of doing. He became what Tyria needed. I am happy to see with the growth of the Living Story, they further develop him and the pact. Playing in the Silverwastes and the Stories, hes obviously grown into the Pact commander. Hes decisive and commanding. The Pact itself (if anyone has noticed) is no longer split between the three orders. They are all labelled as pact, they all work together well, and the architecture and style as well has taken on a unified look. The Pact and Trahearne grew. This is the biggest selling point for me on Season 2. ANET looked at the development of how the world will be with the killing of Zhaitan.

Also, if you do not like Tybalt, you are dead to me. That lovable dork is my hero.

I don’t think it will matter much anymore. It appears to me like Anet wanted to go living story to update their world and not go the expansion pack route. I’m assuming that didn’t go as well as planned since Colin mentioned in an interview that they would use the LS in between expansion packs. I could be wrong of course, but it sounds to me that the LS will play a very minor role in the future.

Since I’m going on the assumption that living story will play a very minor role in the future, I don’t see any reason for Anet to continue to use DE 2.0 they could just make up a few new characters with each new living story adaptation just to get us from one expansion pack to the next.

But GW2 storyline isnt exclusive to one aspect. It would be weird to just stop with de2.0 because no LS patches. I’m pretty sure they will continue with us at least until we defeat mordy. The very first trailer kinda hints to that because we can see there at the end only de2.0 standing in the jungle and braham shouting “we’re taking the fight to mordremoth!”

My problem with Marjory, is the voice acting, and I use the word ‘acting’, in very broad terms. The voice actor is horrible. Monotone, no emotions in the voice. I guess it was okay as a film noir shtick, in a minor role, that she had at first. But now that she has a larger, and longer term role, that voice is very bad and annoying.

Kidding. We all know she’s barely dressed as it is. XD

Silliness aside, I agree with your overall assessment. Rox and Brahm were more interesting and more important in Season 1 for Fire & Frost.
The Kasjory relationship doesn’t upset me, I just feel their discussions of it in the story are inappropriately timed. Inside a crystalline lair of a dead dragon isn’t quite the time to coo wuv-yous.
Also, at the end of Season 1, it was a rush job to make us care. There was no build-up, so the BAM-KISS was very much what-the-huh to me. It was the same rush job to murder Belinda. She showed up specifically to get fridged, and most of us saw it coming a mile away. Not that we had a mile to look at it, since she dies more promptly than the dragon idol during the Maw event.

I cared about Taimi, though. And I’m kittened that my character wasn’t allowed to do what he would have done: Turn that insipid councilor into paste with a giant hammer. The man swings sticks with more mass than that jerk, but I have to sit there and let bad things happen. Just.. grr. But that at least made me care.

Sadly, MMOs routinely lead to bad writing, and Season 2 was no exception.

Predictions?

Brahm eats it, because he’s the only guy, the only Norn, and the gungho that routinely dies in these situations.

Rox eats it, sometime after Rytlock-sempai comes back. Or she becomes the first Druid.
Extra odds fridging Frostbite, so she has to go through the pain of losing another pet.

Marjory or Kasmeer get fridged for the sake of the other.

Taimi lives, because the kittenstorm of her dying would be way too much. Scruffy might die, so she can make Scruffy 2.

Although i disagree with most of the post… (Who doesn’t like Tybalt?) I agree with the part about the Romance between Kas and Jory feeling too forced, too overacted or overwritten.
Its so much so that it really feels more like someone trying to push a “political” or at least “semi-political” agenda towards LGBT than actually forwarding the story of a game.

Otherwise i think the story is nice, the characters, for a game, are pretty well constructed and have depth. I do agree a bit about Braham. He’s too much the Norn Muscle-head. And estranged parent or not, i mean Eir is a freaking living Legend among the Norn… How can he take that long to figure out she’s that awesome?
He developed better towards the end, but looking at the demo footage… Still the hot-head.

It’s pretty disappointing you’re seeing Kasjory as some lgbt agenda. While I have quite strong opinion about the subject, I try as much as I can to rate the romance from storytelling point of view. In this case I find their romance to be vary poorly executed in matters of writing. I am certain if we put two guys or mixed couple instead of Kasjory with the same scenario it will be as bad. It’s annoying romance, makes me think of twilight or other teens movies/books.

As I mentioned in the op – how is it possible that Caitholain romance doesnt feel forced both in game and in book while watching Kasjory interacting with each other makes me “change the channel”.

Ohgod, not the Caithe/Faolin romance. That’s even worse. Faolin runs right over her in her MwaHaHa objectives, and Caithe just.. sits there. Hardly any emotion and just passively dragged along.

Not to mention, Faolin’s relationship with Caithe just makes me uncomfortable because of its parallel to real life abusive relationships. Caithe even goes so far as to kill Wynn to “save” her from Faolin.

Caitholin just leaves me and many others wondering what Caithe saw in her at all, ever. (And whether some of the writing staff might need some counseling .)

Let me get this straight – you thought Faolin and Caithe’s romance was well done?

Even after what you saw in episode 2? ‘You have maniacal tendencies, hang out with crowd that hates our mother tree and want to subjugate our race (which is implied Caithe knew as she did kill Wynne to prevent it), but I still love you! /swoon’. Caithe and Faolin have absolutely nothing in common (I guess they are both firstborn, woo) and Faolin constantly doing things that Caithe disagrees with.

I have no idea how romance where the partners have zero common ground would work, which makes all the references to Faolin and Caithe’s romance from PS make even less sense. While I am not a huge fan of Kas and Jory’s romance, at least it’s believable in terms of Kas needing a strong person to rely on. C+F romance just felt like Caithe was a teenager on her first crush where she is willing to ignore everything and follow her partner in any endeavor regardless of what she thinks about it. Sure, believable for a few months, or maybe year, but how could Caithe not get over it by the PS where she is still saying how much she loves Faolin and willing to fall to the Nightmare for her.

Personally I think that romance arcs are really not ANet’s strong point. I can’t think of one that was done well.

The Main problem is how they be introduced, they felt forced instead of letting us fight for there respect they kissing our feet from the start.

Thats the full issue with them.

Imagine u would have meet Braham first time in a Arena and he kicked ur kitten (like Liadri) then after u beat him he start respect u how would u feel about him then ?

Caithe and Faolain do indeed care about eachother. But I wouldn’t call it healthy. It may have started out as a healthy, natural love and caring for eachother, but it then evolved into a Stalker/Stalkee situation. Caithe turned away from the relationship, and Faolain couldn’t let it go and started acting like an abusive ex. She stalked Caithe and even poisoned her to try to make her be with her.

The Kass/Marjory romance may have a lot of cheese, but at least it’s not a tale of stalking and abuse.

I as with you, but then suddenly you had bad things to say about Tybalt who is the single greatest character in this game. The only character I cared about and was genuinely upset that they killed. Our opinions are far to divergent for me to take anything in this article seriously after this point.

tragic romance story about two people with opposing goals loving each other

Now, I have not read the novel. So I’ll make only 2 comments, take them as you will.

1) Compare apples to apples. In-game romance to in-game romance. You are comparing a romance that’s described in ~30 lines of text in a living story to a romance that’s described in a novel. Way more space to flesh it out.

2) I have to base my analysis on human race as saying that sylvari are different (in their emotional response) would imply they would not act predictably by humans. As they are fairly predictable in game, I will treat their emotions as human ones. Which goes back to
2.1) People with completely opposite goals do not develop lasting romantic relationships. No common ground means the relationship can be hormonal (physical attraction) which fits the description of how Caithe is acting, but certainly a non lasting love (and by the time of PS, 20 years has passed, Caithe really should get over her middle school crush).
2.2) With regards to Kasjory, at least there is a reason for it – Kas feeling extremely insecure after losing her father and needing someone to rely on. Basic premise is there, even if the romance is not written well. With F+C I just can’t see a basic premise for a relationship other than ‘puppy love’ on Caithe’s part.

Remember that sylvari are not human so their emotions can be expressed different.

I kind of feel that both of these are true. Caithe and Faolain are not healthy. Of course they can’t be, Faolain fell to nightmare which totally alters your perceptions and attitude on a variety of subjects. She’s not actually capable of maintaining a health relationship anymore, even if Caithe fell too.

KasJory is also a very immature relationship, but that’s primarily because both participants are emotionally immature. Kas was spoiled, then lost everything and doesn’t really understand how to be an adult. Marjory is emotionally reserved with a rather distant family and doesn’t know how to relate to other people. What kind of relationship could they have but a highschool one? Of course this means that they both have ample room to grow as people and for their relationship to do the same.

Faolain and Caithe are not a good relationship by any means, but that’s not really important, unless a bad relationship is somehow presented as ideal/desirable. What matters is whether it is compelling in the story, and I think it’s not too bad at that.

Remember, the time we see them together in LS2 is only a couple of occasions, right before they presumably broke up. Caithe was willingly blind to Faolain’s actions for a long time (which again, is not a good thing. But can be interesting in a story), but finally woke up to it when she killed Wynne.

Modern Caithe knows Faolain is evil and probably can’t ever be redeemed, so she just has a sort of nostalgic sadness for the love they used to have. Modern Faolain is very twisted, though, and wants to possess Caithe.

Braham= smart like a stick of butter and a hipster with mommy issues
Cant explain it..i dont like him at all. I might not like emo eir either..but im sure if she really is his mom she is partly that way cause her son is a breadstick with hulk body. His armor is cool though.

Rox= the doormat of the blood legion and winner of the anime eye contest 2015.
Seriosly? We got cubs in the citadel that are more convincing in selling me that they are soldiers. Also shortbow?… Didnt she get the patch notes about the LB buff? Also why didnt she get new armor as she was introduced? Like a stylish, for charr designed ranger armor. Nope just a quiver and bow..and the quiver floats like a mile behind your back as charr, thanks a-net and thanks obama.

Taimi= professor x as chibi with a mech suit and child traits…and no telepathy. Got a feeling she is gonna be the deus ex machina…like she already was with the WP system.
She is cute… but i got my eyes on her…not gonna pull the deus ex machina on my watch. I like the concept a lot..but so far we didnt get too much of her..cept some deus ex stuff.

Kashmeer= i remember the “by odgens hammer what savings” guy better then her
Im serios, i needed to go look how her name is. Bland, boring..but i guess she got that pink\gold staff with the cool effect..and is a mesmer i guess…and wears something white…uhh… yea…and was a royal or something hell i dunno.

Majory= Eh.. i guess she is cool but she was cooler as they introduced her then she is now. She was more interresting…cant really describe it.

Oh yes that’s what I mean. I don’t say their relationship is good. But it’s written good. It’s a tragic romance ending up with breaking up and fighting each other. And about comparing romance in game to romance in book. It’s a story so it doesnt matter if its shown in game or in book, its the same story. And in the book the romance is a side story to the main plot as much as it is in game.

However Kasjory’s romance is presented as one of main events happening in LS. Let’s fight the dragon with the power of love! I find those cutscenes and dialogs where dragons lore is replaced with their drama redundant.

Hi there,

since another thread was closed I’d like to continue the discussion with more perspective.

First of all for me the only three characters without problems in this game are Rytlock, Forgal and Canach but in this thread I’d like to focus on DE2.0.

Braham
What’s more I find his relationship with Eir totally not convincing. She’s a legend and his mother but their interraction with each other is lacking and emotionless.

Braham’s final score: 3/5

Their relationship could get really interesting. I hope that ArenaNet is going to explore it more in HoT. So far, Braham just acts like a recalcitrant little teenager, with no emotional maturity. And ArenaNet should show more of Eirs depressed? brooding mind.

You know whatever your opinions are the writers will continue to shove it in your face. Unlike the rest of development team that drops an idea like a hot potato when it does not work out. The only one that did not seem to go anywhere Captain Ellen Kiel. She was left as a complete footnote after season 1. Despite them spouting out that she was going to matter in the future. I guess until the focal point goes back to LA we won’t be seeing anything advance for her again. In my opinion Lion’s Arch got way more attention then it deserved (from all those attacks).

The A-net writers committed an even greater problem since GW2 launch. A long time ago before GW2 went live they specifically stated that human lore would take a bit of backseat for all other races to get their spotlight. Out of all of them the one race that became the lead and the Deus ex Machina plot device (more so then the humans ever were in GW1) was the Sylvari. From Trahearne to Scarlet. What happened to giving all of the races equal time to shine? I hope (but I doubt) after we deal with Mordremoth it will be the Sylvari that will start taking a backseat to the main story.

Ok, I get not liking Brahm, or seeing him as a brute. But, criticizing his relationship with his mom for being emotionless is kinda dumb, because it’s lack of emotion is the point; She abandoned him when he was a kid, so of course their relationship is emotionless.

Hi, my name is Gern, and I’m an altoholic….
