I don't mind grind/slow crafting but...
Well Anet and the white knights of the game will tell you the game is changing to suit the needs of the player base. You can’t do anything much :/.
Why didn’t Anet tell us this was coming when the game started?
Would you have bought the game if you’d known then what you know now?
Isn’t the point to make it take months? Maybe I am confused, but I thought ascended was supposed to take quite a bit longer than exotic, but not as long as legendary. I could have misinterpreted what they meant when the devs said that.
Yes crafting ascended items will give you months of game play, months of content!Isn’t it great ^^.You will never feel bored because you have lots of things to collect etc.On the way to getting there you can also explore their beautiful world etc etc..
i make my first ascended in only one week…so it’s not that difficult as you think.

1 week!?it took me 1 day.
OP, what makes you think Anet knew the game would be changing in this direction?
Anet launched a game with a plan…they saw that plan not working and changed their plan. Developers have to do this all the time.
Possibly the same reason they didn’t mention:
- WvW Masteries
- Fractals
- Open-World Boss and Dungeon Revamps
before the game started; it’s an addition that was designed after launch.

Nice prediction, Xephire. I think we all saw this coming :P
By the way, changing the plan is a lot like advertising one thing, and then selling someone another. It’s not cool, unless there’s an awful lot of upfront communication. Which ArenaNet don’t do. So yea – not cool.

Why the kitten crafting needs to be so expensive? Make frigging expansion if you want money. There isn’t any way to make me buy your p2w gems.

I never said it was cool…I only said it happens. You’re perfectly within your right to be upset about it. I count a good dozen people that post here that are upset about it. The last of the Mahicans so to speak.

Now, with 8 characters, I have no interest in the slow process of crafting/manfacturing these ascended or whatever items for any of my characters… since I know that to make them for all will take many months.
The way this has been done is somewhat underhanded, and has helped to dilute my interest in GW2. Anyone else agree?
Months? I have 8-80’s all classes, I haven’t even finished trinkets yet! lol
Yeah, I didn’t buy this game on the promises that I’d be gear tier grinding the whole time. It was hard enough just getting the many exo sets per character to adjust to various aspects of the game. Since it is impossible to do that with the new tier, really it just seems more like a dumbing down of the game. Smart is needing to switch to the right gear when needed, making you think ahead. But this just puts everyone in one set with no real thought than just what the over all best damage may be etc.
I think it was never, in a million years, planned. The implementation of crafting has been abysmal. I’m currently stuck at 475. Have no new recipes to craft. Basically, I have to spend time / money on materials to build items I don’t need so that I can either a) sell them for FAR less than I paid for them or b) Salvage them for things I no longer need (black matter).
From 425-450 and 475-500 are a wasteland of things to craft.

On your original point. I think that if people knew at launch that GW2 would turn into this almost no one would have created an alt. You (and I) believed that this was an alt-friendly game (some people would say that ANet never implied it would be, others will argue they did, that’s matter of blame and I don’t care). It was (for about 2
months), but it’s not any longer.
The slow introduction of ascended gear made me feel like it may be manageable. Not great, but I could do a reasonable job kitting out three toons (Sorry Raith, Sayn, Devon, Etching, and Cloudy, you guys have been voted off Tyria).
But Ascended weapons, and Ascended armor by December makes it very clear that even 3 are too many.
The best thing you can do is pick a main and relegate everyone else to ore mining duty (or jumping puzzle camping).

I agree 100%.
If there is going to be a gear treadmill; I would rather play a game that does it right. GW2 is just a boring laundry list of materials.
I HATE crafting and I HATE gathering. These are chores; not intense game play.

Which ascended weapon only requires 1 spiritwood plank, 1 deldrimor steel ingot, 1 Elonian Leather Square, and 1 bolt of damask?
I think I need a new main.
I think several people have summed up my disappointment very well – I was lead to believe that the progression in GW2 would be merely cosmetic, not vertical progression of stats. From that, again as stated, the impression was that people with many toons (or ‘sheets’ as I refer to them in offline RP gaming), would have little to fear – once you had completed your chosen equipment set, any alterations would be a matter of taste.
Ascended has pretty much changed the game as regards to that. If I had only 1 or maykittenaracters, I’d have said “Okay, get to work gearing up”. With 8… it has really knocked the wind out of my sails as regards the game.
On another note, I largely share the disappointment of others regarding the usefulness of condition builds and revamped world bosses. Yes, it is only a few gold for some more exo, but the way this has left not only builds, but entire professions in the cold as regards usefulness.
I disagree, to a point, that this game is alt unfriendly. There are many ways to use alts. It’s ONLY alt unfriendly if you somehow decide that all alts must have BIS gear, which isn’t a requirement of the game. In fact, different alts for some of us, serve different purposes. I can do anything in the open world on an alt, even in rares. I can run dungeons with the exception of high level fractals on any alt…that’s any dungeon I choose.
I’m not sure why BIS gear is such a big deal to have on every alt.
By the same token, every alt now has the same magic find, they can all work on achievements for you, they can all help your bottom line.
I just don’t get it.

Different people get different things out of an MMO. I have no idea what you get out of it. I know that what I get out of it depends, at least in part, of having BIS gear. Are you saying that how I play the game and what I enjoy is illegitimate?
If so, why even talking, just move on. There will be no persuasion here.
If not, then the only question is whether this game had something for me that is now gone. (the ability to gear alts in BIS gear and to easily change builds from one BIS outfit to another)
I was VERY careful not to say that ANet SAID anything or PROMISED anything (I actually edited my post to make sure we didn’t get into that old argument… yawn). All I’m saying is that objectively it went from that to this. Period.
And, for me, this is terrible for alts.
P.S. For the record, I don’t get your viewpoint either.
P.P.S. For someone like me, I probably shouldn’t be playing MMOs. I should stick to single player games where the achievements are well understood and the bar doesn’t move.
(edited by TooBz.3065)
It’s rather annoying to have to play against your own best interests if you want to have fun. Enjoying running around doing Dynamic Events? Tough luck. Zero profit. Enjoying jumping puzzles (because you’re a masochist)? Tough luck. Zero profit. Enjoying helping lower-level players getting through the world? Tough luck. Etcetera.
The same is true for most MMORPGs, of course, but GW2 DID ride on the promise of getting rid of this nonsense, rewarding dungeon runners and people doing hard content more than anyone else, but not pushing everyone else to be be pressured into doing something they didn’t want either.
So… Don’t craft Ascended. It sucks. Ignore it. Live with the small disadvantage and don’t torture yourself.

Why not make ever end gear have the same stats as promised? They can drop magic find i’m sure they can revert the stats for ascended and legendary gear.

The problem is simple. You’re playing this game, with the prejudice of playing every other game.
In many other MMOs you need BIS gear to do stuff and so for those games that attitude is probably correct.
But when a new game comes out, if you drag your prejudices from other games with you, if you try to play this game like you’ve played every other game, you’re likely to be disappointed.
Why have a fixed, this is how I play games attitude? Does that help you somehow?
I’m not pointing out that you’re doing it wrong. I’m pointing out that your insistence on this is damaging the amount of fun you’re having. If that’s okay with you, by all means, feel free to continue.
In other games, I was a completionist. I had to stop here, because it would kill me. I can’t enjoy this game as a completionist…but it’s a different game.

Strange, cause I remember people asking for gear grind. Usually they get shot down pretty fast so they stopped posting.
In fact, one of my most highly rated posts on this forum is warning a guy that he just opened a can of worms by asking for it.
I started enjoying myself a lot more since I started playing for fun. I was grinding for Sunrise, then accepted I would never have the willpower to finish world completion so I sold Dawn and bought Foefire’s Essence instead. Now rather than grind, I do dungeons for fun, I actually get in to WvW again after like a month of not doing it (grinding gold/mats), and when it comes to ascended … well it doesn’t really bother me. I haven’t got a clue how to craft one besides that you need a bunch of ascended somethings and that some mats are time-gated. Sure, the loss of stats is a shame … but I play just fine with exo armour/weapons and ascended trinkets.

I’m thinking the onesy-twosey folks bringing it up were a far, far smaller crowd than the anti-gear-grind crowd (as evidenced by the afore-mentioned mega-thread).
ANet really misread the community on that one (or got greedy and panicked at the perfectly normal drop in players a few months after a game launches), and screwed the pooch when it comes to making GW2 redefine the genre.
We’ll never know for sure, but I bet they blew their chances as becoming legendary in the long-term trying to knee-jerk fix a short-term hiccup. That one decision, back in October/November is the one that’s going to haunt GW2 for the rest of its existence.
They could at least do what CCP did after Monoclegate, admit what happened, and put up a monument to the player’s epic dissatisfaction. I don’t think ArenaNet is that classy, though. Not any more.

People were bored and leaving. What evidence do you have that more people wouldn’t have left if ascended gear wasn’t here than more people left because of it?
I know you really believe that forum posters are the majority or think like the majority, but in my experience that’s not true (and this was backed up by something said not too long ago by an Anet dev).

Yes, but they launched > 1 year ago.
I HATE crafting and I HATE gathering. These are chores; not intense game play.
Well yeah, it’s mostly useless.
The first mmo I started crafting in, I bought a weapon (an axe) and some carpenter crafting tools (hammers, saws, nails etc). I approached a random tree and started chopping away. I took the wood, crafted them into planks. Took the planks, crafted them into weapons, tools and furniture. As I moved along from tree to tree, I gained skill as I built stuff, enabling me to build better stuff.
One time while doing this, I found an empty plot of land, I used a house deed and set up my new home out in that forest. It was empty, but I had some crafting skills so started chopping more trees down, filled the house with furniture. I then crafted a mining pick and set up a forge, went out to mine, brought it all back and started on another trade. I made swords, lanterns, more furniture and even combined my knowledge of carpentry and smithing to make more interesting and rare items.
In time I also had a number of other crafts learned, set up a vendor in my house and started selling this stuff to my neighbors. I’d fill the vendor up with crafted items, set prices, then collected the money every few days. I sold so much stuff, I had to put more vendors into my house, and they would all sell out on a weekly basis.
Eventually I saved up enough money and bought a bigger house nearby. I had a nice living space upstairs, downstairs I had a full shop where players would regularly visit to find things to buy. I could make anything craftable, and players would come from all over the gameworld to catch deals and buy stuff from that little shop.
That’s crafting, and no one was ever forced to craft a thing in that game.
But here…
More like a gimmick, get people to dump in time and gems. Otherwise it’s 100% pointless. I can make anything in this game, master crafter, but it’s no more than just a mini-game, has no “mmo” feel to it at all, I could just as well grind champs and never give crafting a second thought. And the more they force people into crafting, the more trivial crafting seems to become, something everyone does – like it or not, which makes it all pretty worthless. Way to go, Anet!
I got my first ascended done today. I immediately logged off.

Merchant gameplay is a thing. Just because you don’t understand economic principles, doens’t mean other people don’t enjoyit.
And you know what – you don’t have to do any of it if you don’t want to… buy stuff from other players who do.

This game is an RPG. That is “Role Playing Game”. RPG’s of all kinds for decades have had resource gathering in some form or another. It is part and parcel of playing an RPG. I think you have chosen the wrong genre of game to play.

Nope.

Okey, Gathering might not be for everyone
(…but you can still buy the stuff from the AuctionHouse).
But the most “difficult” Task is getting all the other Materials – and there are already soo many possibilities to get them. Unless of course you want to be as Efficient as possible.
