I have a friend in Europe and I’m in the US, I want to play with her. I suggest that you make a neutral server with no access to PvE or WvW that we can both guest into.

Both of you get a free account. Yours on her server. Hers on yours. Then you play together either on EU or NA. Or both get 2 new accounts, one on each data group. This is a lot easier and faster than ANet creating another server with no WvW access.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Or just let EU players to guest on NA servers, and vice versa. You could move between, US, EU and Inta with ease in GW1. I don’t see how GW2 is that different. Its a moded engine of GW1 after all.

Aman to that. I got several people on EU servers I would like to play with. But I am not going to start my account from scratch when there should have been a way to play with each other from the start.

I don’t know how Guild Wars 1 was set up but Guild Wars 2 has two data centers that store account data. One is in Austin Texas and one is in Germany. For one account to play on a different data server, the account has to be completely transferred over. No guesting is possible. For WvW reasons, they don’t allow free, unrestricted transferring like they did at the beginning of the game.

Yes. But how many data centers did Guild Wars 1 have and if they had only one for Guild Wars 2 (in the U.S. of course) then what is the effect on WvW and PvP with the ping the EU people would have?

I don’t know what the effect would be fore GW2. I have been told the lag wasn’t as bad by players who played GW1. Of course to compare to the two would be comparing apples to oranges I am sure, in relation to their specifics.

I tried checking wiki about the servers. It’s pretty vague. It doesn’t say where the servers are located (worldwide or in the U.S. only) or explain why people could freely switch between districts but not between Guild Wars 2 data groups.

Territory
Guild Wars game servers are divided into territories that correspond roughly to areas of the real world. Every account has a home territory. There is also a global “International” quasi-territory that allows players from all territories to play together. It is common for Heroes’ Ascent pick-up groups to form in International Districts.

Server
Guild wars is hosted on distributed servers. All the characters of a given district or instance are on the same server, but a server may host multiple districts or instances. These instances may be dynamically transferred to other servers depending on server load and connectivity.

At any rate, if you can’t guest to another data grouping then you can’t. Whatever the reason, cost, the way it was designed, philosophical, whatever, If they haven’t put it in in 3 years it’s unlikely they will. You can always ask for it of course but if you want to play together then your choices are for one of you to transfer your account or to make and use free accounts.

Indeed. I believe when this was brought up pre launch, ANet said it was dew to tech limitations. Some times, with time, limitations can be over come. But its weather or not ANet wants to invest in over coming them.

Yeah, I think it has something to do with how/where the data is stored.

One in US and one in Europe. Same as GW2. At some point there might have been one in Asia but not anymore. That is how it is now and it was also how it was a few years ago when I was still actively playing GW2. I wouldn’t be surprised if GW1 and GW2 are virtual servers running on the same hardware.

GW1 was not an mmo. The only hubs were the cities, outside of that you just played with a few people. The only things close to this is sPvp. Pve content in GW1 was all instanced, like dungeons, you can not compare that to an open world game and think the same rules apply.

Seriously where do some people always get that totally wrong information???

Gw2 is a totally different engine than gw1. Basically it got build from scratch by anet. That’s why it took ~5 years for gw2 release. Well that even was the main reason why gw2 got created instead if another gw1 addon. Because gw1 engine had too much limitations (no walking+skill use, no jumping, no rolling,…)!

No one has given me a technical reason you couldn’t have a server just for guesting in. You would just need all three databases, or input from the same, in the same sever would be my guess.

You install once to get the client. You access your account through the launcher with your email/password. No matter how many accounts you have they all use the same launcher, unless you go in and modify the command line for it to be separate.

I’ll give you an analogy. All EU players are in a “box” for Eu. All NA players are in “box” for NA. To get to “box” for mixed EU/NA they would have to transfer the account (not guest) to that “box” which would be separate from the regular EU and NA databases. To get back to where they were they would have to transfer back. If the people transfer to the mixed NA/Eu server and then there server became full, they would not be able to get back to it but would need to pick another server. The problem isn’t really technical. It’s cost. The cost to make this server and then have people transferring back and forth to it.

The tournament players were probably manually transferred to another data center and then back to their own.

ANet may give it to you.

Game engine

Guild Wars 2 uses a heavily modified Guild Wars game engine which includes support for true 3D environments, more detailed environments and models, better lighting and shadows, new animation and effects systems, plus new audio and cinematics engines and a more flexible combat and skill-casting system.

Yes you can. GW2 is a modified version of the GW1 engine. If they could let you freely change regions in GW1, why not the same with GW2. Mega servers are kind of the same thing. Each map is a hub. Once it gets full, it makes a new one, just like GW1 did with it’s city maps. The only difference is we can not freely chose what map to join, or regions.

This is the only way GW2 could work based on what we know of the set up of the GW1 engine.

I know what GW1 was and was not. I’ve played it for the last 10 years.

It says right at the beginning if the IGN article:
“Eventually we reached a ceiling of how much we thought we should add to the game without undertaking a radical revamp. So two years ago we announced our intention to stop developing additional campaigns and instead turn our company’s attention to developing a sequel. Developing a sequel allows us to start again with a clean slate and build a new Guild Wars from the ground up to be the game we always knew it could be.”

Parts of other engine are part if the gw2 engine. As far as I remeber parts if gw1 engine might have been reused. But gw2 was build from scratch in a totally new engine, it’s NO moded gw1 engine. If it would have been possible just do mod gw1 engine than anet would have done that and created new gw1 campaigns instead if gw2.
