I hope the Land Spear/Polearm use same skin
If they do that odds are they will use the same skills from underwater but on land. Though that is an ideal how would underwater skills work on land?
If not well could the current skills be modded to work on land say sink becomes a knock down and a float becomes a knock back/ knock up.

Personally, I’m expecting them to be different, as that allows them to cover a wider range of weapons under the class (I think there’s also a halberd in Canach’s scene, for instance). It’s possible that they could just use it as an excuse to make a wide range of weapons as underwater ‘spears’ as well, but that would start getting people to ask why they can’t just use the same weapon both above and below water, rather than having to get an underwater and above-water instance of what is effectively the same thing.

I’m no programmer, but I would assume that it is entirely possible without much difficulty for the devs to sort something out, considering your skill bar automatically switches to underwater skills if you go beneath the surface/come out of the water anyway.
The weapons would just be programmed to have one skill set above water when equipped in a normal weapon slot or a different skill set when equipped in the aquatic weapons slot and when below water.

It would be the same wepon that the thing skins are only allowed to be put on the same wepon type or we would be able to put out GS skins on our staffs. Think of it form that point of view. There are rules in the game where you can see what could be done.

Pure speculation unfortunately, based on items used in artwork – which is not the first time, waypointing to Timberline Falls gives the same reason to speculate as the new artwork :/

yeah utilities already work like that when it comes to water skills and land skills. the bar changes

clearly Anet hinting at Polearms in Heart of Thorn trailer.

because I just spent some of my limited gold on Spear skins which I never get to see currently because I never do underwater content in the game.
I hope they dont make them separate skins like they did for Tridents and Staffs in the game which share same models for many weapons.
Why in the world would you spend some of your limited gold on, of all things, spear skins.
My guess is that HoT will introduce Land Spear 1h (ranged, melee or both), Great Axe, Halberd (it functions similarly to a 2h spear)

I believe in it, that GW2 will get Polearm Weapons first at the moment, when an Anet Dev officially announces them either here in the Forum, on the Website as Blogpost or live on a tradefare like PAX South or Gamescom there together with an Announcement Trailer, what is something completely different, than a Game’s Story Trailer, which is just only a piece of art and nothing, that confirms any new game features or any new game content by any way …

Due to the way skins work in this game, what you are really asking for is for the same WEAPONS to be used above-water. ANet has no problem with copying skins onto different weapon types and making you rebuy them, as you yourself noted.

The HoT cinematic was a pure teaser, don’t you think it then would be appropriate to add the teased things to the game also? Might take away the use for a teaser if they don’t add the teased items..
They don’t add things in it for no reason, every weapon used, character seen, landscape seen, yea basically everything that is put in there is there for a reason, that will be revealed @ PAX.
