I’m terribly sorry but that concept was scrapped.

Although I, like you, love Elves I like the fact that they went with something a bit different. Sylvari feel more special and different now.

I agree with the OP.

I love the current one. That one is just boring. You might as well play a human and dye your hair green.

I am with Sythus on this. I always liked elves, but I love the sylvari the way they made them now too. They are… different… and very, very lovely. No need to change them back or anything.

I am glad they went with what they have now. They are just so fun to customize, some people (like me) can spend ages making a Sylvari due to all the options you have. So many colours and they glow at night! If they went with the old concept of elves it would have been really generic, they already have Norn looking really similar to humans as it is. Put elves on top of that and you have two races which look really different to anything else and then generic humans, larger humans and skinny hippy humans.

Sylvari are Elves with plants allover their bodies, Asuras are different looking Dwarfs.
No MMO is MMO without Elf and Dwarf looking creatures.

No way. I don’t really play sylvari, but I appreciate that Anet decided to add something interesting and unique. Not just more kitten elves.

I understand maybe wanting something more human/elvish. And I’m not one to bash peoples personal tastes, you like what you like.

But honestly I love the Sylvari so much in their current state. Though I always like plant things.

You can look kinda close to human/elfish if you pick the right colors and stuff. Certain lighting conditions can make brownish Sylvari to look more human. Can’t do anything about the leafy hair and stuff though.

the cool thing about sylvari is that they are a new race to Tyria and ideal for people that did not play GW 1 because they give you a fresh introduction to the world not yet influenced by politics of the history of the other races

I personally prefer the current incarnation of the Sylvari. The previous incarnation just looked like elves with plant costumes and didn’t really fit the whole “people grown from a big tree” backstory. Kristin Perry sacrificed her own personal time to redesign the Sylvari and the redesigned Sylvari now look unique and fit much more with their backstory. And I personally very much welcome the departure from something that looks like Tolkien-esque elves (not that I don’t like Tolkien-esque elves, but they do feel a bit overused in fantasy genre games).

Norn are just tall Dwarves. Ale and all.

They look like fairies there, no way would I ever make a Sylvari if they looked like that.

I prefer the way they are now. it’s:
Human
BIG Human
Plant
Gremlin
Cat-Bull

If they kept the original idea, it would be:
Human
BIG human
GREEN Human
Gremlin
Cat-Bull

That’s too many Human characters.

I agree with the OP too, as they are now i will not play them i’ve tried multiple times they just turn me off every time…

Just one thing about dwarves folks: there are already dwarves in Guild Wars. They’re just all stone now. When dwarven culture and norn culture were in the same game (Guild Wars: Eye of the North), their cultures were different. They were similarly different to asura.

On topic: while elves are interesting, they tend to be an overused concept. Most elven concepts (old race, used to be dominant but is relatively small now) have been used for humans. Humans look significantly like elves due to elves looking pretty much almost exactly the same as humans. Norn are rather uncreative in design in my opinion but different enough that they can pass it believably.
Sylvari are a new concept that, while they may have some elven tropes (trees and magic!) the rest of them is fairly different.

The old design of the sylvari made them look like elves. Elves are relatively uncreative in design and would have been criticised greatly. Besides, the old sylvari design did not really look like it grew from a tree, honestly. Their appearance needs to fit the lore.

(Which is why we need buff women Norn and shapely men Norn. The differences are disheartening.)

it’s just a regular elf to me, nothing special.

The Sylvari are a decent race but I somehow feel as if they cut quite a few corners when designing this race, if I had to say at least one corner cutting method it would be that the human and Sylvari character animations are almost identical at least for combat and all other animations excluding the running and dancing animations. Rehashed models drive me to be quite incensed. I rather like the old models as well because it actually fit the concept art and at least for me they looked more distinct, they looked more peaceful and more belonging to nature.

I like the current one better. Now what?

I like wood elves better too.

I love the picture in the OP. If you had that race in the game, whether it’s called an elf or not, it would have been very popular.

Are you kidding? The old Sylvari racial concept was terrible. Green skinned humans with effeminate forms and bad hair. The new Sylvari concept is interesting, unique, and has more potential for customization than any other race in the game.

That said, I would like to see more face templates that don’t suck. There are like 2-3 decent faces each for males and females with a lot of poor hair options.

Although I am an unabashed elf lover, I also love the Sylvari and don’t want them to change. Their concept is fairly unique in fantasy MMO’s, and it makes them stand out among the crowd.

I much prefer the plants we have now over the tired elves.
