Firstly, let me just throw out there that I do indeed love this game, it was the first game I bought when I built my gaming rig over 2 years ago (as if somehow that exonerates me from what I’m about to say) but I just do not understand how such a large company can get it wrong on so many occasions.

I feel like I must say this, because I’d like to think that everyone’s opinion matters and issues won’t be addressed unless people are made aware of said issues.

I know I’ll probably never get an official answer, but I’d like to try anyway.

So, can someone please explain to me why 2 events very recently happened the way they did?

1) The Anniversary sale.
What a disaster. You had multiples forum and a subreddit all crying out for items they wanted, items they would physically give you money for, and you ignored them. I don’t understand that mentality. Your customers want an item and you say no?

The thing that really irked me on that one, is that you then extended the sale, only STILL to not sell the items people had requested, instead only giving them false hope.

2) Mordrem event.
In theory, this could have been a masterpiece, but all we received was just slop. It could have been a wonderfully designed event with unique rewards and a sense of people playing together to actually make a difference in Tyria. Instead, all we got was an all out mush fest where each player only proved to be a hindrance for others. I can only assume this was passed down to a newbie or a work temp to do, as it just smacked of last minute desperation.

The final thing I’d like to say about GW2 in general, is that I’m actually quite disappointed with the lore. GW1 was steeped in it! You couldn’t move for NPC’s telling their stories, explaining about different cultures and races. It was fantastic.
Then the books. Oh my, the books. They were amazing, I loved everything about them. I loved that each had different writers and each had a completely different tale to tell in a unique way.
Then GW2 comes out and I feel strangely lacking in lore. Here’s just a few words to sum up what I mean:
Kodan / Soundless / Dwarves / Unseen / Cantha / Elona / Dominion of Winds (this one especially)

Each one of those things have such little lore around them compared to the first game, all need more exploring (some both physically and metaphorically). To sum this up perfectly, I recently started playing a Norn, I met the Kodan and travelled around their village, talking to everyone, hoping someone would tell me more about them, where they came from, their customs, just something a bit more than stock text. In the end, I ended up having to look them up on the wiki, something that I think is incredibly poor storytelling.

I understand there’s always room for further regions and explanations in expansions, but if I’m off to the Maguuma, I’m going in the complete wrong direction from the Kodan or Cantha.

How do you all feel about this? I know this topic is a bit ad hoc and a bit mish mash, but it’s just a couple of things I felt like I needed to get off my chest.

If I’ve gotten anything wrong, please let me know, nicely

Thanks for reading!

I agree mostly on what you wrote. On the quoted part, thats not that easy as it sounds. For me a sale is that you get something ‘cheaper’ and not just reintroduced. So for me around 50% of that stuff was a real sale.
On the issue that anet didn’t bring what player requested: well, I understand and agree that anet should reintroduce some items that weren’t available since 2 years.
Sadly a lot requests on the forums are about gemshop items that have been available multiple times this year or sometimes have been available just some days ago. I’m seriously happy that anet ignores such requests.

Well as to the two questions specifically;

1. What one person doesn’t want, someone else does. Just because there were people annoyed/angry that their items of choice didnt return/went on sale doesn’t mean the items on sale were bad to begin with. It’s really a matter of opinion whether you liked the items that did go on sale or not. (also they didn’t really give false hope by extending the sale ) There were items i was really hoping to go on sale that didn’t, but that doesn’t suddenly make the entire sale horrible because they didn’t.

2. Nothing much to say about this one really, they even stated themselves the event didn’t go as they imagined and wasn’t exactly doing great, what else can be added other than the fact that they’ll keep the feedback for future events to not repeat the same mistakes, it’s a bit of a done deal. It happened, it wasn’t great, they acknowledged it and took in the feedback to make sure future events don’t follow the same path.

Lorewise there is more than people generally think, it’s just not in the wall of texts from npcs but moreso in events, but i do agree that they could do more to bring the lore of the world to the player.

Well i’d put cantha on hold for now, i don’t see it returning for quite awhile as for the kodan they may be more featured during the possible Jormag expansion, for now though to focus is really going to the jungle, their inhabitants, the true anture of the sylvari and ofc mordremoth

I disagree partially with this point, although not entirely. I feel that this game has a lot of lore, and a lot of lore behind it, and I feel like they are building up more and more, a bit at a time, sortof like unwrapping a story and eventually seeing the full picture in the end.

The books I liked for the most part. And while they did give a good explanation of some of the history, they weren’t chalk full of lore, either. I know that I would most definitely want to see more books in the future because I really like to read, perhaps on other cultures/areas of the world that they may not get to in game for awhile, etc. I would enjoy that.

I do enjoy that the NPC dialogue changes over time. Particularly in Lion’s Arch. (Some of them anyway, the two norn women in Hoelbrak who are talking about the collapse in Divinity’s Reach haven’t gotten word of the remodeling, yet, apparently…) It really does put breath into the world for me.

But I have been hoping for more lore, too. Particularly of other regions. And if they can’t release those regions in-game as the rumor seems to indicate (at least Cantha, I guess), then they should really consider releasing a book of some sort. I would love that. I want to know what’s going on in the world while we are isolated on Tyria.

Well as someone who joined recently, the anniversary sale was pretty good. Might want to think of that sale as aimed right at new accounts. I picked up a lot of stuff on discount. I get that I had nothing so it was great, and to vets maybe the sale sucked.

I don’t, for the life of me, understand this communities obsession with bunny ears ect. I get it you want it, and you only want it because you cant have it. This makes those who did decide to buy the ears have an incredible value on those items. Scarcity creates value, be it artificial or not. If they put them on the store immediately no one will want them because everyone who does will have them. I get that on the surface this seems to be stupid because, hey, they are turning down money. Maybe down the road another form of bunny ears (another color or effect) will appear, which will retain how incredibly valuable and or rare the origionals were.

As for the event. Couldn’t agree more. A total “swing and a miss” by anet. All the new players expecting an epic event because that’s what this games known for and has been doing for three years now…I expected something that would blow away the rift invasions, and it didn’t. Not even epic big bosses to fight…just a stationary plant and some weak mobs that were harder to tag than kill.

I think the event was bad but not the end of the world, they do need to redeem themselves. The sale was just fine as a new player. HOT is going to be the big test of this games longevity. Doing an expansion every three years isn’t good, so this expansion better be kitten near epic.
