4. Dulfy
I have never used Dulfy’s guide to any of the events. I go completely off of NPCs in game, the mail that gets sent out at the beginning of a new event, and reading the achievement descriptions. The only time I was tempted to look up a guide was for the Vexxa’s lab achievement when looking for the kite baskets, but in the end I just didn’t do it. I’m also super casual, I play about 2-4 nights a week. I generally get most of the achievements finished either way, and if I find I’m bored before I finish them all then I just don’t finish them all.

6. Achievements, Achievements, Achievements, Achievements
I think the point of some of the achievements are to track progress or provide guidance in the game. For example, when I feel like doing a new jumping puzzle I take a look at the achievements and use their fancy “show me the area I should look in” and I go on my merry jumping way. I’ve never felt pressured to do them, but when I’m not sure what I want to do then I go browse through and it usually gives me an idea. But, I honestly don’t care if I’m ever able to kill 1,000 giants (or whatever it is).

7. Time Gating
Since I don’t usually play every day, I haven’t been affected by this.

To summarize, I don’t feel any of the pressure to play every day and finish all of the achievements. Its funny too because I got God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals in guild wars 1 which was a ton of grind, but that was when I was in college and didn’t work 8-5. I get it that the living story achievements go away and you get something for completing X number of them per segment, but the rewards are all flare and cosmetic so I’m just as good as everyone else if I get the reward or not. I like the living story cycle since there’s always something new to explore and experience, but that’s just my personal preference.

I think ArenaNet should read the OP’s post very carefully, it’s one of the best posts I’ve seen here.

ANet staffer reads thread, runs to Dev “Help, the players are revolting!” Dev says, “Yes, I know they are.” Staffer “No. I mean they have guns and knives and other weapons!” Dev says “Oh, you mean that sort of revolting.” Reads thread. “Hmmm. Maybe if we put in Halloween content where they find 500 footsteps of the Mad King all across Tyria…….”

Basically the game to me has boiled down to;

Look at the reward for the current LS;

>Am I interested? :

-Yes: then Dulfy up and solve it ASAP before the new LS release draws away all the people
-No: get back to what you really want to do; explore, level up alts, gather materials for my legendary, do dungeons, go to frostforge and tryout different build/combinations on the mobs there.

I wanted the SAB stuff, I really liked the SAB first time, but I just cant keep up with everything, so instead Im doing nothing. Kind of like in RL; too many things to do, just curl up in a little ball iunder the bed sheets until all the problems fade away, just to realize it is only making it worse and then at the last minute you just have to scramble and blaze your way trhough, thats not fun

I agree that the OP has some very valid points.

I think the reason for all the time gated updates and being forced into playing before a certain time is simply the fact that Anet found that more updates means more buzz means more players. While the original plan was to release them over longer time periods, around a month, they changed it to release more content faster, but all these events meant that they needed to get rid of the ones before. I suppose rather than having all these events building up, they just make them time out, forcing you to play, which is good for business.

1. Overflows

Overflows haven’t been a real issue until Tequatl

2. Disconnects

I’m sure it will be pathed up sooner than later, it has really only been a few days the D/Cs have been really relevant

3. Insta-kills

Really? I think you just need to play your class better and practice, especially testing different builds if you’re getting Pwned that bad.
4. Dulfy

Vague? Really? Look at your achievement points for the content, it literally tells you what to do instead of going to Dulfy, which..you’re complaining about and using it. That doesn’t make sense.

5. Stop trying to force me to play

Forcing you to play? LOL. Get real man, no one forces you to play anything but yourself. There’s plenty of options to get gear in this game, if you’re having trouble, I feel sorry for you if you try to get into any other real gear treadmill of a game.

6. Achievements, Achievements, Achievements, Achievements

Complaining about it without any real constructive criticism goes no where, if you don’t like a certain element of the game, don’t do it. It’s simple as that and if you think something can be done better, suggest it. I understand you’re passion about it by this post so use that passion to give some better feedback bro.

EDIT 7. Time Gating

This is ludicrious, if a month isn’t long enough to actually do what you want to do in a online persistent MMO, then perhaps this isn’t the right game you should be investing your time in. Every event they make at the beginning of the month lasts FOR a whole month, and not 2 weeks, they push content out every two weeks but all of it certainly doesn’t last 2 weeks. So this topic is irrevalvent to me because you got a whole month to do SAB and Tequatl is permanent.

So this topic is irrevalvent to me because you got a whole month to do SAB and Tequatl is permanent.

You do realize most people complaining about time gated materials are not referring to the content like SAB and the like right? They are referring to time gated forced speeds of acquiring gear (ascended, celestial to be specific). At least from what I’ve gathered, some yes have complained about the events time frames, but far more as far as the gear bottlenecks.

Quite a few would even say the time gated events are too fast, and while it’s understandable that they come and go quickly, most people are aware they are not “one time events” and will return at some point in the rotation. Most players can live with that.

Maybe all of us should be more specific as to which “time gated” we dislike, as it’s fairly obvious by the comments there are two separate things people are talking about.

For me:
Time gated gear = ridiculous, unneeded and unwarranted.
Time gated events = Keeps things moving and most will come back around, no issue with this one personally.

Time-gated is not the problem…anyone who feels “forced” is letting their emotions cloud their rationality. They make things time-gated to motivate and guilt you into buying gems. It’s up to you to have some self-discipline with your wallet and time.

So my logging on “once a day” to get my one charged quartz motivates me to buy gems how? Wont be able to test my hybrid build till i complete the set of which many in OMFG (mesmer guild) are interested in seeing cant even be done until a few of us make full sets.

Like i stated, right now the game has two time gated bottle necks, we need to be specific to which one is actually bugging us. This clarification may make a difference.

i agree 100% with everything but what is the point to this forum anymore. This topic will be ignored along with the other 100 that bring up the same points. Yet tomorrow some Dev will reply back to some kid that said “Hey, when i dodge my Character only goes 2 feet and not 4 feet like it said in the patch notes”

I’m going to be honest i was a huge huge huge fan when this game first came it was perfect. Now it’s warped into some Achievement point, farming zerg, blast through all the 2 week temp content catastrophe. I’m banking on the elder scrolls online when it comes out. But im sure it will be a Hyped up flop.

The days of good quality MMO’s have been far and few. I have cut back on buying the almighty GEM!!! for the last 2 months; I dont think i spent 1 penny so far. So i guess keep your head up and just enjoy playing the game at your own speed.

I had to log in to say… I am in complete agreement with the OP.

I stopped playing a couple months ago, as I was no longer having any fun in game. I truly loved GW2 when it first came out, and had a great time for the first several months. I leveled three characters to 80, and completed world exploration twice. Even got my legendary weapon on my Ranger.

I am happy to admit I am a completionist. The majority of my enjoyment in an MMORPG comes from “finishing” everything, whether it is maxxing out all the crafts, earning all the titles, collecting all the pets, completing all the achievements – you get the idea. Unfortunately, thanks to having unusual hours at my workplace, and to being a single parent of two teenagers, I simply cannot keep up with the pace Anet keeps pitching out new content. In every other MMO I have played (not saying ALL of them, but the ones I personally have played) I am not limited by my available playtime.

“Want all the titles? They’re yours… just understand it is going to take you a LONG time to get them. You will get them, though, because they’re not going anywhere.”

I keep watching these forums though, as I wait for the time Anet puts on the brakes and changes course. I really DO love GW2, and I eagerly await the day to once again BE GW2, instead of the unfocused, time-pressured mess it has become.

1. Overflows
Doesn’t particularly bother me as any time I have been in one I simply join a friend’s party and join them, either in a different overflow or in the main server. I preferred the district system from GW1 where you could pick which “overflow” you wanted, but this works too.

2. Disconnects
I rarely disconnect but when I have I never felt like I was missing anything. Dungeons? Hop back in at the farthest waypoint. Fractals? Spawn at farthest checkpoint. Dynamic event? You spawn back in to the same spot you were. How do you propose they hand out rewards? Send them to you as soon as you spawn into the zone the event is happening regardless of success? Pause the entire server for anyone who disconnects? Give credit no matter where you are in the world if you participated so you can bank rewards from multiple events across multiple zones and servers at once?

3. Insta-kills
Another mechanic that adds variety and promotes a certain style of play just as other situations favor/promote another. A one hit kill? Block the hit, blind the boss, dodge the hit, become invulnerable, etc. Many mechanics exist to counter this. I’m not saying this is good justification for it but it IS a video game staple. That one big boss attack that you have to dodge or you’re kittened. Its not exactly a surprise.

4. Dulfy
Difficult to strike a solid balance between spoonfeeding and starvation. To say that adding arrows that point you everywhere would break immersion is a bit of a joke since there are already so many things working against immersion in this game, but still, its a little extreme. Currently, I would say no content has been so obscure that you couldn’t get through it without a guide and I am proof of at least one person doing just that. Now, I may not have physically be able to complete something, but I never felt like I didn’t know how. An optional guide from a 3rd party is, again, an industry staple, if you are the sort of person that needs a guide to figure things out, that option is there for you. Its something people expect and if not dulfy, then gamefaqs, or some message board, or an official bradyguide, etc.

5. Stop trying to force me to play
No one is forcing you to play. If something looks interesting to you, play. If it doesn’t, don’t. I didn’t play the last few updates because sky pirates and a flying bazaar did not appeal to me. During that time I played what I enjoyed, exploring and doing map completion and fighting the good fight in WvW and tPvP. I don’t feel like I missed out on anything by not playing. I don’t feel “behind” other players. I don’t understand why you feel like you’re forced to play.

6. Achievements
I think the entire idea of achievements and achievement points are stupid in ANY game, I don’t need a game to tell me what it thinks is an awesome achievement, I already know what that is. When I say, “ohohoh holy kitten that was cool” or get that “kitten yea!” feeling, I know I just achieved something and I don’t need a number attached to it. ALL OF THAT SAID, I don’t feel like I’m missing anything not getting achievement chests. It is very little gold and the %boosts are small enough as to be insignificant. It might “add up” eventually, but if you play long enough that it has time to add up, chances are you’ll be getting enough achievement points to unlock them just playing anyway.

7. Time Gating
Stupid. I understand the idea behind it but beyond giving devs more time to work on stuff, I disagree with the whole thing. People should be able to play at the pace they want. If you’re a turkittend powergamer, power to you. Is the inconvenience to the players worth the time it buys the devs? Difficult to say objectively. Subjectively, no its not.

- Overflows:
What I dislike about overflows is this bad feeling that it’s fracturing players. It makes me feel like I’m being cast aside to play “alone” because that’s how overflows feel most of the time. And being on the European server, the overflow becomes a mishmash of different languages, which only further alienates a person. -

thumbs up for this i’m a black gate server since day 1 so i’m really kitten ed why iv’e been cast away from other server blackgatian’s should have prioritize i’m not for owning a server or what, there should be a “Home Advantage” don’t worry you still got your home advantage too not just for BG

They’re good points, to be sure… I’m just not convinced they are as bad as the OP is claiming. There ARE limitations to what a developer can do… in this case, Overflow is their answer to crowded zones. I’m not sure there IS an answer that would appease every player.

Time gating is another issue that there’s no real solution for. If there was no time gating, you’d just have an entirely different group of people griping because they’re being left behind and that Guild Wars 2 is no longer casual friendly because of it.

The disconnects are a problem with EVERY game, and you’re not going to find ANY online game that will abolish that problem in its entirety. You might as well be shaking your fist at the sun for rising in the morning.

The others are personal opinion, of which ya know… that’s just your opinion, man. Not that they aren’t valid, but other than “It’s fine to me”, what can be said in rebuttal?

Doesn’t matter if it’s time-gated. If you don’t want to (or can’t) log-in every day to do your dailies, then too bad! You dont’ deserve it! The achievement is there for people dedicated to the game. There is no reason why someone who refuses to do daily achievements should be rewarded those who do them.

I understand you want to have an achievement system that is not time-gated, but these time-gated achievements reward those who are dedicated enough to play the game day in day out. If you can’t do that then readjust your expectations or maybe stick to fixed achievements.

Sorry, Vol, but your logic is failing.

You don’t get awesome points because you have a life that allows you to log in every day. You don’t get a special badge that entitles you to free refills at Starbucks because you can afford the time to play every day.

It’s not about dedication and it never was. Time-gated content and achievements is not about separating the dedicated L33T from those pesky casuals. Your insistent need to counter everyones argument with nothing but, “If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen” arguments are really not constructive, or even all that well thought out.

Please, try to contribute to this conversation with a little more understanding and consideration.

Well sooner later everyone will leave then he can with his own l33t self, i hope he funds the game well solo.

i agree too… with op, even if overflows or disconnecting doesn’t really bother me. i’m not playing this game due to the things to do in schedule, time gated content and the invisible instant kill (example lupicus phase 2 you can dodge aoe but there is an invisible projectile that down you no matter what, same with dwayna world event, i can be hit by the lights and still stands and sometimes for no reason and the same gear i got hit from the lights and go downed in an instant), invisible red circles on red ground griefing colorblind people like me (we discuss this issue since the very beginning, but apparently changing the circle to something more visible or a different color it’s just unacceptable). endless new content that is nothing less than old content but recicled or forced on to you and even if you don’t care to play it because you manage to have enough selfcontrol to not bother with new shinies and achievement, half people and friends are busy doing it and the other half already left

Why do you think Game Guides shot up in popularity in the later part of the 90’s and now they exist for almost every game that comes out? If you think companies aren’t working with these people then it is you who are deluded.

Thats the reason these forums are filled with complaints every time a farm spot is nerfed, or content is made harder without increased rewards, or a moneymaking export is closed. People chasing the carrot don’t see the journey (which is what rpgs even mmos used to be about) on the other side of their blinders, all they see is that carrot dangling inches in front of their eyes and they just keep running until they can catch it (which they never will).

I don’t mean to be contrary Gaspara, but I think Dulfy IS needed right now, and I feel like I made some seriously bad choices because I didn’t start reading her until recently.

The problem is that ArenaNet are great at making their events sound cool and interesting and lore-appropriate, and terrible, absolutely terrible about making it clear what it’s important for you to do, what failing to do will cause you to miss out on permanently, and in some cases they completely fail to explain how you should even get started on stuff.

Cases in point:

1) the Queen’s Jubilee event – I had absolutely no idea how to get started, following in-game information. I spent literally an entire evening of gaming trying to figure it out. I saw some cool stuff and so on, on the way, but until I was directed to Dulfy (or another guide, I forget which), I couldn’t work it out. I’m not stupid or bad at following instructions, so… Wasted an evening because ArenaNet didn’t bother to give us good directions/explanations – I wasn’t the only one confused, either.

2) Gift of Crystal – I had no idea that thing was even in the game! Let alone something I should be hurrying to get! The sad thing is I played a bit whilst you still could, went to that isle, did some of the stuff, wasn’t excited by it, and so left, not realizing I was losing out until I saw it on Dulfy long AFTER it was closed (I was going back through to see what I’d missed out on).

If ArenaNet were better at signposting some of this stuff, I don’t think Dulfy would be needed, but… right now they’re using her as a crutch – making it so players who do want to know what to do have to go there. Because the time limited content is often, y’know, really limited, this is quite an issue.

Time-gated is not the problem…anyone who feels “forced” is letting their emotions cloud their rationality. They make things time-gated to motivate and guilt you into buying gems. It’s up to you to have some self-discipline with your wallet and time.

I just want to point out that this is complete and utter nonsense, because NONE of the time-gated stuff (Laurels, particularly) can be obtained by “buying gems”. I wish people would stop claiming stuff is to make you “buy gems” when “buying gems” will not help with these issues at all.

Laurel’s can’t but the Acended ingots, plants, and leather things can.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

Empyreal Fragments, Dragonite Ore and Bloodstone Dust can’t; the time-gated Ascended materials you just mentioned can also be bought with earned gold rather than converting gems. Generally speaking for all the hemming and hawwing about the evil moneygrubbers driving every decision behind this game’s additions, Ascended gear in general is not very friendly to the “pay2win”-inclined among us.

Yeah – GW2 has 99 problems but being “pay2win” very certainly ain’t one.

I couldn’t agree with point 3,4,5 and 7 more. I think those are exactly what frustrates me most about this game.

Sorry, but I don’t believe that you’ve never used Dulfy or another game guide. The reasons for this are:

1. There are no hints whatsoever as to where certain items might be hidden, but you are asked to go fetch them nonetheless.

2. For Southsun anyway, there is no possible way you could’ve known which npc’s were important, and which ones were not. You would’ve had to go through each and every npc on the island, which would’ve taken at least 2 hours.

Again, I do not believe you just go off of the “npc’s”, the “mail”, and the “achievement description”. Unless you severely hate yourself with a passion, you’ve used Dulfy on at least one occasion. I do that too where I read the mail, listen to the npc’s, and read the achievement description. Sometimes there are some helpful hints, but most of the time it sends you out into the world blind. And this coming from a “Legend of Zelda” player where there are no hints in the game, or they’re completely useless, yet I still find things easier in Zelda than in Guild Wars 2.

Like i said in another posts, overflow and guesting is just the wrong premise; it’s like inviting people over to your house for dinner and they kick you out leaving you to go have dinner at a restaurant and sleeping at a motel. People who are on the server should always be prioritized and if that cannot happen then they need to merge the low pop servers and kill guesting at least for the first week of new events.

Vini, Vidi, Vici, Viridis…I came, I saw, I conquered…I got a green??

The server is not your house.

There are no servers beyond WvW. Dungeons, for example, are treated as if servers did not exist.

You have no right to anything on your server over guesters. The game already gives you a priority when moving you from overflow to the normal zones.

Emphatically agree with the OP. Great post. Those of us who share your views no doubt appreciate you throwing your excellently-worded commentary into the black soulless void where it will no doubt be ignored. :-P
