I very much dislike stealth finishing as a mechanic and wish that it did not exist, but it is difficult to provide tangible reasons as to why such a mechanic should not exist.
Namely, one must compare it to stability finishers. If one is to assume that stability finishers are legitimate and intended (and there is no reason to believe that they aren’t), it becomes necessary to judge other “cheap” forms of finishers in comparison to it. Stability finishers can’t be counter-played by the player being finished off, but can be countered by teammates of that player through boon removal followed by cc. Stealth finishers can’t be countered through removal by anything other than a single Ranger shout, but they can be countered through area-of-effect cc. Guardians and Engineers have this on their downed state. Teammates with AoE stuns/knockbacks/knockdowns can also save you from the stealth finisher, whereas they would likely be unable to save you from a stability one.

Nothing wrong with rezzing, stomping/finishing someone while in stealth. If they are applying burning while they are in stealth and not being revield, that is probably a bug since it is an attack from stealth hitting someone and that should apply a revieled. If they are not hitting anthing when blasting, they should not be removed from stealth.

I don’t necessarily intend to directly call stealth finishers illegitimate, but blind and aegis finishers can (with few exceptions) be countered by using your 1 skill before your cc skill, stability finishers can be removed via boon removal and then subjected to targeted cc (requires a teammate, but this is a team game), Mist Form has a long cooldown which leaves the Elementalist without one of their main defensive tools for a long period of time, unlike stealth finishers, and invulnerability has a long cooldown.

Something has to be done with stealth, It can’t be that someone in stealth can ress/stomp (also get rid of this mesmer “start stomping, port away, port back – stomp” crap) /dish out dozens of blast finishers to heal full without being “noticed”.

-Stomping
-FinishersANet wanted to enable counterplay to stealth, too bad that it’s just utter crap, 4 seconds of reveal on a 40/32 second cd from a class which isn’t even able to burst down a squishy thief when full zerker geared in this 4 seconds.

i agree. anet has implemented the absolute worst stealth/counter stealth mechanics in any game i have ever played.
overall though, there are just way too many “gimmicky” and poorly designed profession mechanics in this game. it’s sad because there is much more potential, but they just keep on shifting around trait numbers and tossing new gear at the problems.
edit- one of the devs likes nightcrawler way too much lol
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.

I’ve never had a problem with thieves stealth-stomping. They’re still vulnerable to damage and CCs. It’s not difficult to stop them. Just dps/cc on friendlies or, you know, rez them when there’s a thief nearby.

Thieves are already a free kill for my warrior :p
Btw, any considerable nerf to stealth must come with a considerable buff to either dmg or survivability for thief. There’s not two ways about it.

Please nerf all those too, I rage and QQ so hard when I get stomped when I’m downed. It has nothing to do with the fact that I got downed in the first place and it has everything to do with the person being able to stomp me. I must be able to stone them to death when I’m downed! I must prevail!

No I don’t, hell (I play as a thief), when I’m going to get stomped by a thief, I see they enter stealth, count 2-3 seconds, and teleport/stealth so they don’t stomp me on that try, that is if I want to kitten them off and hope that they go on to the forums to QQ. But really, more often then not it’s a time waster… majority of the time there’s no gains after being downed, it’s pretty much you are already dead. Also, general AoE CC’s work… like warrior’s hammer skill, gaurdian’s 5th staff skill, to name a few.

All in all, I agree! Nerf thieves more, please! Also remember that they craft faster when they’re stealthed, so if you can nerf their crafting speed that would be awesome as it’s unfair to other classes.

Stealth finisher isn’t all that great. The thing is that thieves have the most efficient stomp ever.
- Blackpowder disable 5 of the 8 professions delay skills.
- Stealth to confuse enemies and also disable mesmer’s delay skill.
- Steal shadowstep to disable thieves’ shadowstep delay downed skills.
- If you haven’t used shadowstep for a while, and you don’t have initiative, you can shadowstep stomp.
- If you have immobilize you can stop an ele from moving away. If not, you can just shadowstep when the elementalist’s mist form is over.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant

Seriously… If they’re stealth it doesn’t mean you can’t hit them… See a thief, see him dissapear when someone goes down(his team or opponents team), then expect him to go for a stealthened rez/stomp…
You can still use any skill that stuns, KD’s, daze, whatever… The thief will be interrupted regardless of stealth… You KNOW where he is, that’s more then enough…

Man I feel you OP I feel the same frustration when thieves get away in stealth after I shoot their HP from hero to zero in one killshot. Maybe remove the stealth from stealth and just make it a buff (5s) that causes pink letters reading “Arenanet” popping up above your head upon dying.

OP you’re not aiming high enough. Nerfs like that take a lot of work and planning. Would be easier if they just deleted Thief~ but only if they let me change my class to Warrior and convert all my gear to heavy and give me a legendary of my choice to replace the Incinerator. They can then delete the other classes too and just give their skills to Warrior.
