Guys, I’ve been gone for about 6 months(ish) from the game. When I left I told myself that I wouldn’t get back in because I was done with this game. Now a family member has gotten the game and is really getting into it. Now here’s the question to you guys: Do I get back in? Is it worth it? Some follow up stuff for you to answer:

1. How much has changed? I know Lion’s Arch got finished or something like that.
2. Has much changed in the way of the “meta”? All zerk with warriors, ele’s, thief/guardian is what it was when I left.
3. Has the state of the Necro’s changed much? I guess any class for that matter.

That’s all I can think of. Thanks for everyone’s help with this

dungeon is still zerk since stacking hasn’t changed. Some bosses they changed to be anti-stack though. Zerk necro is pretty cool and self sufficient, but similar to the ranger, as a self sufficient class, necro damage in parties is still super crap. Not sure about sPvP state, but necros are still cool for WvW. minions are still fubared though

1) The only thing that changed in the last 6 months is the specialisation update. The way the build system work and how condition work. It was a lot of fun theorycrafting and a lot more build diversity exist in the game. But Anet is a break to focus on the expansion which will come in 2 months so no new content.

2) I love the meta. Hopefully they didn’t change it. The expansion is suppose to bring more difficult content that will push the game toward more support and the new break bar is suppose to bring more control into PvE. I don’t know if they will succeed.

3) The specialisation changed a lot. Necro is one of the best profession in sPvP these days, still awesome in WvW, but it still lacking in PvE. Ranger and Engineer got buffed with some awesome condition damage PvE build. In PvP, it’s free for all, same with Warrior which can now be DPS and Phalanx at the same time. In PvP, pretty much all profession have some very powerful build.

Is it worth getting back in the game? Depend on you. I love the game since day one, but the lack of content drove me in break a couple of time. But I always get back into it and with the incoming expansion, I’ll probably stick with the game for the next year.

Lots of changes in the last six months. In terms of the game check out the build tab as it has changed dramatically.

The PvE meta probably has Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist, Mesmer, and Thief. I’m sure arguments could be made here. And, yes, Zerk is your friend.

Necro is playable but I’ve shelved my conditionmancer (what I play Necro for) as pretty much worthless right now.

There are still lots of peeps running “META-ZERK 8k+AP GEARPING”, but you can just ignore those groups if you are not interested in them.
In fact it is fairly easy now to get just a regular group through LFG.
Just post “Path X – all welcome” or possibly add “noskip/noexploit/full trashfight” to make a group if you don’t find such one already listed.
You can actually get a group to play any content non-Meta style now.

My experience is that when advertising a group as “all welcome” instead of meta most people that care to join are more polite and fun to play with.

As most games go, meta is meta. The term itself implies it is the best, hence there can really only be one meta. Whether it changes from one thing to another, whatever the new thing is will be the new meta and all the meta-heads will want to be that.

I don’t play meta (although I do have a meta character, you know just cause, but I never play him) and I’ve done every dungeon path, fotm50, and all world bosses without issue.

Getting a group together in LFG is faster and easier if you aren’t meta believe it or not. There are far more people looking to run dungeons/fractals without dealing with zerk meta elitists than there are zerk meta elitists.

I post a LFG for all welcome, no meta required, and I have a full group within 60 seconds. Contrast that with the LFG zerk only ping gear 10k AP speed clear that is still at 3/5 people when I finish my run.

The game does and always has allowed players to complete all of the content easily in any set up. Some people want to do things in the fastest possible time. Those people go meta. If you are one of those people, then you understand meta and understand that going meta requires a certain playstyle. If you quit because of that playstyle, then meta or min/maxing isn’t for you and just simply avoid it.

State of necros has changed quite a bit. The elitists won’t want you on their team, but if you are avoiding them anyway then what does it matter. I run my necro through paths regularly and haven’t had anyone complain. I almost always start my own LFG, though, so I can find like minded people (which are the vast majority of players).

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

1. They cleaned up trait system a bit from all the junk traits. Crippled personal story with “1 chapter every 10 levels” thing. Arah story is now part of personal story and can be soloed. Stacking cap on some conditions was increased from 25 to 1000+.
2. A whole lot of nothing was added to instanced pve world. Meta is mostly the same.
3. Necro got a bit more coverage on youtube. Still has same old problems but at least you can find some good guides now.

Are you sure it’s not part of personal story still? I thought it was, the only change being it is a solo instance now.

You’ve been gone for 6 months, which means you’ve been gone since March, roughly. Nothing has changed in the game since before January, so no. Nothing. LA got a face lift, and it’s cool. If you go in and do the miniquest you can get a dragonite eater. Other than that there is nothing new to add, short of the new content that is going to come out soon and of course the expansion in a couple months.

Oh, and a complete revamp of how traits work, which had very little impact on the game proper.

The game has no monthly fee so it costs you nothing to play it when your family member wants to play. When s/he isn’t playing, you can just ignore the game as usual. There’s no need to make this a a dramatic “do I start playing in earnest again or not?” decision.

That’s what I did with GW1. I quit playing 4 or 5 times, the longest was for a year. Then picked it up again when I had more free time or felt like playing it again. That’s the beauty of games with no monthly fee. You don’t feel compelled to play it to “get your money’s worth” even if you hate it. Heck, I just got off a 8 month hiatus from GW2 because I got too busy with work.
