I bought Lyssa’s outfit from the store because I really loved the dress, but I want to swap out the helm.

But when I try to open my wardrobe, it defaults to the skin I had on before I put the outfit on, instead of showing each piece of the outfit.

Do I have to use the whole outfit?

Outfit is a set, you can not change one piece of it to the another piece of outfit or armor. Armors are those what you can change and use different pieces.

So what you can change in Outfit? You can make a choose on your equipment window that you are not showing your headpiece from your armor and that way outfit’s headpiece is not shown either.

Sorry but in order to be able to do that you would have needed to buy the game three years ago. Back when they were called Town Clothes you could have swapped out head gear, gloves, top, pants and boots. Anet decided removing functionality and options to improve clipping was a better thing.

What? You can customize your look through the wardrobe and using transmutation charges. OP seemed to believe that you could customize outfits the same way but you can’t. An outfit does not require any transmutation charges which is a nice benefit especially if you are leveling. On the flip side you can’t customize like you can through the wardrobe with transmutation charges. The only thing you can change for outfits is the color and a toggle option to display certain pieces like head gear.

Town clothing was completly different and was a set you could wear in town or out of combat that you could also customize with settings similliar to the wardrobe function. However that was removed and replaced with tonics that you have no way to customize at all, including color.

If they produce armour and weaps that clip through chars’ body parts and/or other parts of the same set, that is not OK and people have a right to be less than impressed.

As all that should really have been tested before release.

However, if they allow people full freedom to experiment with a large variety of armour pieces, it is only to be expected that some pieces won’t work with others.

Therefore, it would have been better to allow us (far) more freedom, IMO.

ATM, there just isn’t enough variety, at all.

That’s why he said 3 years ago.

The majority of town clothes (all the full sets) got turned into outfits, which were intended to serve the same purpose but are so crippled by the lack of functionality that they are not really similar at all, beyond having no need to look like armor.

(Which is why they had to give refunds to everyone who had bought town clothes before the change.)

There’s Outfits and then there’s Skins.

Outfits, you can dye them and you can show/hide the helmet (no swapping pieces – it is all one piece, aside from displaying the helm or not).

Skins, you can dye to your heart’s content and mix all kinds of pieces from different sets, but for mixing, you have to use transmutation charges to modify the appearance of existing armor and weapons. Keep in mind that this changes the appearance of the item permanently (though it can be changed again for as many times as you have transmutation charges to use) – this is important to remember because once in a while there’s an item that no longer works as part of a recipe, whether it be crafting or the mystic forge, after you have transmuted it. So proceed with caution regarding super rare/expensive items.

Also keep in mind that with skins and transmutation charges, it’s inadvisable to spend the charges on something you’re going to upgrade soon, unless you’ve got loads and loads of RL money to blow on buying charges from the store, for speediest acquisition. It’s best to wait until you’re max level and have a set of gear you’ve invested in, whether it be exotic or even ascended. That way you get the most out of your charges.

Finally, skins and outfits have a wardrobe system that contains your unlocked skins and outfits. Once a skin is unlocked, it’s unlocked permanently for your account and can be applied to any piece of gear for its type, so long as you have the transmutation charges to do it. Once an outfit is unlocked, it can be turned on and off at no cost any time, with the caveat that it’s a single piece and can’t be customized beyond color and show/hide helmet.

You probably already know some of this stuff, OP, but I figured in case there’s anyone reading who doesn’t. Good luck.

Or words to that effect.
