I wish there could be an alternative to get a precursor
I remember when I bought Abyss dye for like 80s, and thought that was a lot. Almost didn’t buy it.
But yeah, inflation city. It’s these Legendary sellers, if they made them soulbound on acquire it’d be a different story.
i was also tired, but i had a nap, now i’m good.
Let’s give a conservative value of rare greatswords at 40s
That means you gambled 800g off on the forge instead of saving it up and buying it.
Not sure why you are complaining – you gamble and lost every single time. It’s no one’s fault except yours.

Actually, the designer who made rng such a crucial part in legendary acquisition and thus created the whole ordeal is to blame too. Without that, there would be no need to chose between gambling/safe way in the first place.
RNG is optional, not required.
You want to play the RNG game, go gamble on the forge.
If you don’t want that, go save the gold that you make and buy it.

Why does Guildwars 2 need all this RNG crap, the first never had this why must the second be labored with it…
To the OP i understand the percurser means a lot to you, but i think you took the wrong path, the legendary percursers in the mystic toilet (called the toilet for a reason) has been nerfed so badly, if people are smart they’ll completely stop using it..

RNG is not optional its hard-coded into every aspect of the game, there is no option..
I do like how you see major parts of this game, that are either do them or leave the game… because there’s nothing else to do, as Optional, actually every thread i see you going on about optional this and optional that…
Yes they are optional do them or leave?
Because that’s the only option i see, you’re doing your legendary because you’ve completed the game, what’s really is so optional about it, nothing..

This is a lie.
Guild Wars 1 had plenty of RNG. Voltaic spear, celestial compass, frog scepter, there were many many items that people farmed or tried to aquire. In all the times I ran Bogroots growth, I NEVER got a Frog Scepter and I ran it hundreds of times. Sure you could buy one for 150k, but don’t say that the RNG wasn’t there. It was. You ignored it.
And you can ignore it here just the same. I do.
RNG is not optional its hard-coded into every aspect of the game, there is no option..
What? You could’ve spent that 700-800G to just buy a dusk/dawn straigh up from the TP you know. That IS an option.
Also what is with GW1 players going “GW1 had no RNG?” That is a flat-out lie. Sure nostalgia can make you look at games with rose-tinted glasses, but come on now.

Well this is only partially correct. At least in GW1 people knew where to go to farm particular items. GW2 is a mess in that department. You have to look no further than the thread about chickens dropping better loot than dragons to see how kittened up loot drops in GW2 are.

Yep I saw the thread. And it was very entertaining. But even going to those places doesn’t guarantee anything. Nothing at all. As I said, I tried for a frog scepter for well over a year, and never got it. I knew where to go and I had to repeat the same dungeon over and over.
In Guild Wars 2, they took that aspect away. You can get that drop anywhere, do you can go anywhere. And you’re seeing this as a negative. I didn’t WANT to run that dungeon anymore. I’ve have loved to chance to get a frog scepter somewhere else. So what to you is a negative, to me is a big positive. You don’t have to troll one spot for a chance at something.
This is NOT a bad thing.

I’ll challenge that assumption. If people are farming cores, they seem to know where to go; if they’re farming T6 Mats, they seem to know where to go; if they’re farming rares, they seem to know where to go. I see references all the time to farming X at spot y. Their complaints are not about not knowing where to farm, they are about kitten-poor drop rates and DR.
That Precursor talk again.
I really hope Anet acknowledges the fact that they messed up with Precursor’s and don’t require the same “RNG” when they implement Legendary Armor.
A Precursor shouldn’t be forged by random luck and money. It should’ve had a story, a quest line or something that would’ve gave it more depth.
It’s a shame they decided to take such a shallow route.
For months now i have been trying to get my dusk, i have thrown over 2000 Greatswords down the mystic toilet
So we’re progressing the same in terms of getting a legendary, the difference is I’ve put 0 effort into it… I hope you get it eventually.

Dude, it didn’t had RNG, only drop-rate, which was pretty high for rare-items. The difference between GW1 & GW2 RNG is that, gw1 rng was fun, u had to clear dungeons, have tactics, speed clearing, have communication. GW2 RNG = Standing still for hours & hours, putting swords into 4 squares. Need more gold? Go grind mobs, use the same skills over and over without even thinking. Just brainless
Precursors are fine the way they are.
First off, if precursors were easier to get then you would see everyone one with it, and legendary would not be so legendary anymore.
Second off, every other item in the legendary build would increase in price. The thing that holds alot of people from even attempting a legendary. If suddenly people could get this item, everyone would be going for a legendary. The materials for these legendaries would skyrocket since everyone is buying them up.
So instead of paying 500g in one item, you will pay 500g in multiple items.
Agree with OP. It’s ridiculous that the only ways to obtain a precursor are through either
1) low-odds RNG or
2) Spend hundreds of gold on the TP
In my opinion, this seems deliberate by ArenaNet to create an “incentive” for people to purchase gems and change them into gold. That’s playing dirty pool, guys.
Edit: how about adding another, guranteed method of getting a precursor. Like say, a Mystic Forge recipe.
what im readin now is people just saying, oh you should have saved the mony. I didnt spend 800g all at once. it was in 20 GS’s every day, but knowing arenanet they will never increase the drop chance of one or have an alternative
I speak for everybody that we want some kitten change!
you dont speak for me, I got 2 Dusks in 16 tries with level 80 exotic greatswords on tuesday

Three things.
ArenaNet isn’t responsible, directly, for the price of things on Black Lion. Those prices get set by players, and if they figure they can charge 9001G for a Precursor then that’s NOT the company’s fault. People charge that figure because they get it, or they at least hope to get it.
The idea behind the rarity of Precursors is to keep Legendaries from basically becoming overexposed. They’re supposed to be somewhat rare, special, an achievement (which there is an achievement for). Whether this is a good idea, or a bad idea, or just an all-around failure of concept? I can’t judge that myself, I’m biased.
Due to point #2, any action which will make Precursors easier to get means that it trickles down to affect how easily Legendaries can be earned. How much does it impact it? Hard to say, some people only need the Precursor, others won’t start planning the trip until they have the Precursor. It’s one part out of four, after all.
The reason we don’t see an easier way . . . yet . . . is that there’s the question of “once we do this, how many Precursors will we see pop up because of this?” If the question leads to the thought that too many will show up, that idea will be shelved. This is probably why we haven’t heard about the “scavenger hunt” idea aside from “that’d be neat, we’ll take a look at that idea”.
Dude, it didn’t had RNG, only drop-rate
facepalm
I hope you realize they are the same thing.

It’s kinda funny how you bring up dungeons actually. GW1 dungeons is more RNG, in which they have no guarenteed rewards like GW2 dungeons have with their token system. Dungeon-specific drops like Charr Carvings were RNG drops from mobs.
Also just saying, even if you enjoyed the GW1 RNG more, it doesn’t change the fact that it still had RNG…

As someone who went several UW trips with no Ectoplasm drops? Yeah. I can kind of attest to that. One time I had nothing but blue/purple canes drop reserved for me (I am not kidding).
Someone in anet said that there will be a treasure hunt or something like that.
Just be patient
+1 Heijincks.
The scavenger hunt is being designed, it’ll be here the second half of 2013, maybe a bit later. Wait for it and spend the money on the other stuff you need.
But kitten 800g. I would’ve stopped at 100g, saved up and bought me a Dusk from the tp.
Someone in anet said that there will be a treasure hunt or something like that.

They said they liked the idea of it, and would think on it. Nothing’s been outright promised to exist yet . . . and given the huge focus on value of Precursors? Yeah. They’ll likely be very coy about it so don’t expect them to say more than “oh, yeah, we’ve got a plan now” before it goes live.
That does support my “nothing’s promised to exist yet” point. It’s being worked on amidst a bunch of other things, last I heard. It’s not top priority, which means . . .
. . . it’ll make it in when/if it’s ready.
I’m just saying that you guys need to be patient…
If you want it that bad right now, go buy one.
ITT; people want the super-rare epic item to be far less rare and epic.
I sure hope that when I get a legendary not everybody is running around with it cuz Anet caved to the whiny.

What is rare and epic about buying something from the TP? Oh, and I see plenty of people running around with them, some people have at least 3. Not so legendary anymore.
But they gave me plenty of porous bones to compensate.
Three things.

Sure they are. They could make Legendaries and Precursors account bound. Then it wouldn’t be an issue.

There are other ways to do this, aside from low-odds RNG. A difficult to craft Mystic Forge recipe, for example, that requires farming up a lot of account-bound items.

Well, if the required items are account-bound, rather than RNG-based and available to sell on the TP, then ArenaNet would have absolute control over the difficulty in obtaining a precursor or legendary. But when I wonder why, I always tell myself to “follow the money”.
The current system (low-odds RNG + tradeable precursors/legendaries) encourages people to purchase gems and convert them to gold. ArenaNet knows exactly what they are doing with this, and it has nothing to do with what players want. It’s a cash shop strategy, pure and simple.
I’m not saying it’s either right or wrong, but I am saying that I don’t like it one bit, and I find it rather distastefully done.
after the first 20, I would have started simply saving up for it.
Seriously, why would people, KNOWING that RNG is bad for precursors, throw away their money at a slim chance when they can buy it out right.
Again, ANet is working on a solution and I want it as much as the next guy, but that doesn’t excuse poor financial planning on the part of the gamer.
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
RNG is in every MMO. This MMO actually has better chances than a lot of other MMOs.
Also you have a better chance to get a precursor if you do 4 different weapons, instead of 4 greatswords. When you do greatswords alone you can only get about what? 1 precursor? Doing 4 different things it raises your chances to get a precursor from 4 different ones.
Now it’s 1/20 chance to get it. You can be extremely unlucky and never get it, you can throw in items for giggles and get it. If you’re that unlucky, buy one instead of gambling.

you can buy a max amount of 3000 gems monthly. Anet limits how much gems you can get. With the current gem to gold rate it’s about 30 gold. What will you do exactly with 30 gold a month?

Um. One of the purchasing options is 4000 gems for $50 USD. That’s more than 3000, and you can purchase 4000 gems multiple times in a month. Not sure where you got your info, but it’s not correct.
I already gaved up doing that. Is the most boring thing you can possible do in this game, since it is too grindy, farmy, and takes a looooooong time.
Asura thing.
Your average person has very little undertanding of probabilities.
Just look at a casino and see for yourself. In the old days, people didn’t understand that playing against the house in poker was almost the equivalent to stealing. Once the probabilities are well understood, people played poker without the casino. In order to entice the players back into the casino, the house had to change the rules, which reduced thier profit margins.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If you gamble without knowing the mathematical probabilities, you deserve to lose.

purchased a card of 2000 and couldn’t purchase one for my boyfriend, because I got a message stating that I exceeded monthly gem limit. So it’s limited to 1 card I suppose.
(edited by Mirta.5029)
To me, the legendary is a long term goal. Long term meaning like year or more. So there’s no point in farming for it. I don’t care enough to farm for anything, really. I just want to have fun.
So I play. I get drops. I know the legendary I want, at least so far, and I know what I need for it, because I researched it. But I’m not going to farm for it. For example, I know I need Orrian truffles for my legendary.
I get a couple every time I go to Orr. Sometimes more than a couple. So if I go to Orr, four times a week, just running around, I’ll get maybe 10 a week. In 25 weeks, just playing normally, I’ll have 250 of them. The same with just about everything else, the exception of course being the precursor.
But it’s not even an exception to me because I’d just save gold to eventually buy one. If it takes a year, it takes a year…what else am I doing?
The question is once I have it, what will I work on?
Even the clovers which are RNG, only involve getting stuff I’d get anyway. Coins from dailies and monthlies, ectos from salvaging golds (some of which I craft just for that purpose), crystals which come from skill points which I get while playing anyway, and obsidian shards that I get from karma, which I get from playing.
The only reason this whole thing is an issue is because people want a legendary sooner rather than later. So they force themselves to farm for it, and then they don’t get good enough drops and then they come here and complain. The whole game sucks because they can’t get their legendary in what they see as a timely manner.
Me, I’ll play my game the way I want to, and enjoy myself. One day, I"ll have a legendary, just like I got my Obby Armor in Guild Wars 1, and my tormented weapon, and my GWAMM title. A bit at a time.

That’s a limit on your card then or your area. I’ve purchased (4000) $50 worth of gems for myself and $50 worth of gems for my Husband using the same card 2 minutes later. There is no limit as far as I can tell, and if there is, it’s more than 8000 gems.
Why was the user infracted for this post?
Precursors changes are coming.. just very.. very… slowly
The Mystic Forge gives you the potential of getting a precursor with much less time or gold investment than normally required. It can also lead to you wasting a lot of rares and exotics that could have been sold. It’s a gamble, whether you chose to use it or not is entirely up to the player. Personally, I sell my rares on the TP. I feel better getting a guaranteed cash-in than hoping the RNG will reward me.
MF is sad, I agree. Have you tried throwing in dungeon exotics? You get them slower, but it doesn’t cost you gold. So you can save up gold, and try the MF, so you work on 2 ways to get it instead of one. Also, exotics have a higher chance to get it than rares.

so UK cards are limited in this one MMO only? This makes no sense to me. Maybe it was an error or something then.

Just because the option is there doesn’t mean it’s encouraged. ArenaNet has encouraged Gem purchases with things like the Backpacks, the limited edition skins at holidays from RNG chests, If you’d been talking about those I wouldn’t have started this discussion.
Precursors, Lodestones, Tier 6 materials . . . these are among the things most bought off Black Lion but again . . . there’s a difference between encouraging it to be done, and simply having it as an option.
By the example of “ArenaNet encourages this with the low-odds RNG” it would be like saying . . . and I’ve heard this argument . . . that since glitches and cheats exist in a game, it’s expected by the developers you are going to use them, so not using them is not playing the game as it’s intended.

I already finished dungeon master, so that farming doesn’t feel that senseless.
But it just doesn’t make fun.
I’m a WvW player that needs hundreds of gold for a precursor, because Anet just can’t control the market. (That precursors can’t be at 10g is absolutly clear, but I think 200-300g would be really enough)
And the ones of you, who play WvW know, that it is impossible to earn much money with it.

Yes, this is pretty much exactly how I see it.
It makes sense that they would subtlety motivate players to buy gems, since they are a business, so I can’t completely hold that against them. But it’s seeming more blatant as time advances, so it’s turning me off and I’m not giving them a single dime. Too many changes seem to increase my frustration and reduce my enjoyment, so I’m tending to spend more time in other games now.

This whole “ANet wants higher prices on things so people will buy more gems and convert into gold” theory is stupid.
The conversion rate from Dollars → Gold is horrid. I think about $500 gets you around 700 Gold. Do you really expect a company to count on people buying optional cosmetics for $1000 (counting the cost of all the other mats).
Besides, if Anet wanted to you buy more gems with real gold, why include a Gold → Gem exchange in the first place?
Why give you more bank slots for collectible items, so you have less of an incentive to buy bank tabs with gems?
Why give lots of precursors out at the Lost Shores event, and is planning a scavenger hunt for precursors?
Of course Anet wants to make money. But you’d be stupid to view everything they do in the light of “oh they want to squeeze every dollar out of us.”

Even if legendaries were not allowed on the TP there is nothing legendary about them. They are just a massive grind to get them. The majority of the stuff can be bought with gold. Nothing epic about that.
