I wish I could be an altoholic...

I like to be useful in WvWvW, I like to not die the second I’m looked at, I like CC, and I hate pets in all forms. The AI are useless. So I was thinking along the lines of guardian and mesmer… but I want the opinions of the forums.
Ohhh yeaahh and I’ve mainly played stealthy assassins in games like this, also mages. But im looking for something different
Don’t play guard, and my mesmer is only level 20ish, so can’t really speak to them. People talk up mesmer quite a bit though on the forums, And from what I have played of the class, they are definitely different and fresh from most mmo and rpg class standpoints. Guards seem to be the tanky condition removal type with utility. Ele’s don’t play like traditional casters, unless you use a staff. Warrior does well regardless, except in spvp from what I’ve read, they have a lot of cc in pve, but are hampered a bit by the inability to always close with maneuverable character classes in pvp. Thieves…are thieves, they follow the stereotype. High burst dps, some cc, stealth. Engies have a good bit of cc and condition applications, but seem to suffer from class bugs and low dps, they are also unique from a mmo and rpg class perspective. So…for a new experience with cc and new class mechanics that aren’t boring go Mesmer/Engie, classic dmg, tanky, cc stuff go Warrior/Guard. I’m sure if I missed something, or am totally off base someone will correct me.
Why would you want to be an altaholic?
I’ve spent a couple hundred gold on character slots. I’ve spent ten times that on gear for all those characters. There are starving children Tyria who I could have helped for just a few copper a day. But because of my addiction, they go hungry.
When you’re an altaholic, moar toonz consumes your life. You spend your time all juvenile feline’d up thinking about where your next alt is going to come from, what class it will be, and will it have a silly or serious name. Will you create another Asura with big eyes and cute floppy ears or will it be a fieresome looking Charr with long fangs and a pink poodle skirt? Will it maybe be a human female running around in her underwear, or do you already have so many of those that Queen Jenna herself has started to wonder if you’re the reason for her lack of lacy underthings.
Don’t do it, man. Don’t let this addiction consume your life. You might thnk that you’re strong. That you could stop making alts anytime you want. But all it takes is that first alt, and then a second, and the next thing you know you’re passed out in an alley in Lion’s Arch being groped by a drunken Sylvari.
p.s. Go mesmer. You can get some of the stealth you said you liked, and their clones allow for some fairly unique gameplay. There are also a whole bunch of builds, and they can actually make very good use out of any of their allowed weapons. As for WvW, you’ll have portal which not only makes you useful, but very popular.
But here’s my body – So rez me maybe?
I think I became an altoholic when I wanted to be able to craft anything and everything. Other games force a limit on crafting skills per toon, so I learned to play, level, and craft with a few alts.
It also helped that I’d look at the utility skills of other professions and become very envious (like the mage portals in WoW). Coveting those abilities, the ones that can’t be put on a dps meter and make the class unique, gets me making alts.
As well as huge, glowy skill effects! I love me my huge glowy skills, flashes, rains, fire storms, plant growths, etc etc. I like starting up other classes to show off those skills and show the team who’s boss! :p
I have several 80s and some 60/30/10
Played all classes and so far at 80 guardian is my favorite simply because of the utility. Pretty much all the weapon combos are useful, and one set of gear will work just fine for all standard builds if you arent a total min/max player. great at melee and ranged, pvp, wvw, farming mobs with ease.. the gear sets look good imo and so do the weapons. my 80 engi farms ore next to my 80 ranger and 60s mesmer.
Im currently lvling my ele though the 30s and im loving that as well…
TLDR. Guardians are great, ele seems fun to me from 1 to 30s… i recommend either or both if you are looking for a new character.
I feel you man,
I’m closing in on 1000 hours /played and the highest I’ve managed to get an alt is level 6.
Mesmer all the way. I have 5 level 80’s now and by far mesmer is the best. I feel like there’s nothing i cant do as a mesmer. You want to be tanky/tricky/bursty/supporty? Play a mesmer.
great forum guys. My 13th alt, shall be a mesmer. thank you, im gonna go take my heart medication, to keep me going.

Sounds like you wouldn’t like mesmer after all because clones are kind of pets.
I think under these criteria you should choose between elementalist(bunkerstyle), warrior or guardian. But tbh almost every class can fit under your criteria assuming they don’t have pets. It mostly depends on their build.

Whats bunkerstyle?
Im a avid altaholic. i have 1 of every class and all are above 15 =p
Just got my 3rd 80 with two more at 60 and two MORE between 30 and 45. I don’t care how bad Rangers are, I’ve always played one in any game that has a class similar to it, and he was my first 80. Mesmer was my 2nd 80 and she can be a hoot if I’m fully awake and able to be a proper keyboard jockey. My Gunslinger Thief build however has been a joy to play in WvWvW, simple, direct and the lead flies everywhere.

Honestly OP, your biggest problem is likely that you picked two of what are arguably the worst professions in the game to start with. It’s pretty commonly held that Necro, Ranger, and Engineer all need a lot of love.
If you are looking for a new main with lots of CC that can take a beating, then Guardian sounds like your cup of tea. Either that or Warrior. Warrior does more damage and Guardian does more support/healing/CC stuff.
Give one of those a try and see how you like it. Then, when they give your necro and ranger some love, you can go hit those up again!
I’d say to get into mesmer.
CC choices are excellent, flexible and useful utility. Invisibility skills and invul which gives you the option to be more glassy.
Clones/phantasms are seem kinda pseudo pettish but once you get into the class they’re more like an extension of your skills as well as a resource system for shatters, you won’t even think about AI.
Mesmers start out slow though, since at low levels mobs are much more straightforward and straight damage > utility. Greatsword and sword/focus or sword/sword should be great until later levels where mob mechanics become more varied and you can experiment with different weapons types.

Bunker is a character build that soaks up damage (similar to a tank build from other mmo’s, but without the ability to hold agro) and negates conditions on itself and sometimes others. Most classes have a bunker build, with ele’s currently being infamous for it (previously was guards). Have low dps generally to offset.
personally from what you have written a mesmer or ele would be a good choice. Have had huge fun with both.
Mesmer, no doubt. Capped my warrior, which was cool enough, but the mesmer is just so much more… fun. After capping him I’m working on my thief, which is fun too, but of the three, mesmer is my favorite.
I was never an altoholic in other MMO’s, but since I enjoy GW2’s solo play above everything else, it’s become my main (no pun) focus. After capping the thief I’m going to start either a guardian (strong but maybe a bit boring, dunno yet) or necro, which I tried in beta and liked, even though people seem to be complaining a lot about it (don’t they always?)
Edit: about mesmer ‘pets’, phantasms are sorta like pets, but not really – they’re more like DoT’s to add to the mix. Clones aren’t really pets, just distractions. If you have a strong focus on PvP, guardian is probably easier.
